The house was clean and had most of the utilities that her husband had bought for her. It was by no means posh but what they had they owned and did not owe anyone anything.

Hi mamma.”

“Sydney where have you been; I walked home mamma and saved the bus fare.”

“What have I told you she said as she took Sydney by the shoulders and looked into his eyes?

“But mamma it’s alright I am home.”

“I tell you to do things for a reason Sydney. Not all people a kind towards us they see us differently because of the colour of our skin.

“I know mamma; but I made a friend today at school and he is white. He has invited me to come to his house for tea tomorrow.”

“What do you call this boy and where does he live?

“He lives with his adopted parents in Bellevue; he is called Jimmy and he is very nice mamma. “ His parents died in a gas explosion and the people who now have adopted him are nice people too.” “One of them is a doctor and the other a physiotherapist.”

“Just be careful who you mix with son I do not want to see you beaten up.”

“Can I go then?

“Yes; what time have you got to be there?

“Five o’clock mamma.”

“I will come for you at seven thirty; you do not want to over stay your welcome.”

“Alright; can I wear my new jumper that you bought me?

“Yes; but you must go in the bath tonight.”

“Must I mamma?

“Yes; I do not want anyone saying my son is dirty.

“Has father rung today?

“Yes he will be coming home next week for a few days.”

“Good it seems ages since I saw him; I hope he brings me something back.”

“Right you go run your bath and put some bubbles in the water.”

“It’s bubble bath mamma.”

Sydney skipped down the passage to the bathroom where he pushed the plug into the enamelled bath then turned on the hot tap.
