*Complete* Part one to Elephas. The story of a strange sickness that begins to kill elephants in captivity and in the wild. When Adilyn finds herself forced into the heart of this mystery she realizes that she might be as interested and in it for the gold as the other players.

8. Chapter 8

“This isn’t one of your better ideas.” Adilyn whispered as they crept through the trees heading to the elephant exhibit.

“You don’t know anything about my ideas, we haven’t even known each other for a full day.” Raz whispered back to her. They could see the office now, it was blocked off with construction tape. So far they hadn’t come across any trouble, apart from a few scraps on Adilyn’s legs from crawling on the ground earlier.

“Hand me the key.” Raz muttered when they reached the door.

“Why do you get to open it?” Adilyn asked putting her hands on her hips.

“Really? We’re going to play this game? I thought you were an adult, this is ridiculous.”

“You’re right, it is ridiculous. You should let me open it. I don’t want you touching my key.”

“Just let me have it.”

“No, I don’t trust you. Let me do it, we’re running out of time.”

“Fine!” He stepped out of her way and the whispered argument ended as Adilyn unlocked the office and they both stepped inside. It was dark but their eyes had adjusted from outside. Robert’s body had been removed but the carpet around that area looked darker than the rest. Adilyn looked away and turned to the closet instead. Raz, meanwhile, checked the desk. After a few minutes Adilyn and Raz switched to double check the other’s work. Adilyn couldn’t find anything useful but Raz left the closet carrying a bucket of rat poison.

“Why didn’t you show this to me?” He demanded. Adilyn shrugged her shoulders and looked back at the desk drawer.

“We had some mice problems in the office and Ranger Roberts had been using the rat poison he had on hand to take care of it.”

“He had it on hand?”

“Yeah, that’s what he told me. But you can’t kill elephants with that, they’re too big!”

“How do you know? Maybe he used a large dose.”

“You're insane.”

“You’re closed-minded.” Raz held onto the rat poison as they finished searching the office, but they didn’t find anything else. They left the zoo that night and Raz brought the rat poison with him.

“Where will we go now?” Adilyn asked as they got back into the yellow langrighine.

“Somewhere where we might learn more about Roberts.”

“Like where, India?”

“That’s definitely on the list, but first I think we should try a place a little closer to home.”

“Where’s that?”

“Good old Vegas.”
