Inheritance Cycle: Barzûl

After the defeat of Galbatorix, Eragon sets out to find a new home for the new era of Dragon Riders. With the knowledge that only the Eldunarí carry, they guide him across Alagaësia until they reach the destined home for the Dragon Riders. As they settle in, Eragon contacts Nasuada to tell of the place where they are settled, and to only share the information with the Riders who are able to make the journey. But when a new young Rider named Barzûl (Dwarf language means cursed with ill fate) becomes Eragon's third apprentice, the tables begin to turn. As time goes on, Barzûl begins to become eager in learning about Galbatorix and soon begins acting much like the overthrower of the Riders. Can Eragon help Barzûl before he seeps into the insane mind that Galbatorix was once enslaved in? Or will the Riders be destroyed before they are even rebuilt?

7. To Ellesméra!

"Observe the wonders around as they occur around you.  Don't claim them.

Feel the artistry moving through and be silent." - The Essential Rumi

Colbert stood in the courtyard of the Kingdom, and Sirath with his bright orange scales, beamed in the light.  Nasuada had promised to join up with them at sun rise and see them off to Ellesméra and to assign 5 guards that would accompany them as well.  Leaning on Sirath, Colbert looked up to the castle.  It was so much bigger then the little farm house he grew up in.

Much like the stories he had heard about Eragon, he grew up in a farm house with an older brother, but he also had a younger sister.  His best friend was a girl that was the daughter of the blacksmith around town, and they had practically grew up together.  When he was 9, Eragon had defeated Galbatorix, the insane Dragon Rider king, and had left the country in the hands of Queen Nasuada.  He remembered when he wished he would become a Dragon Rider just like Eragon, and be able to save other people.

Finally, when he was 13, the elves brought the eggs to his city, and he felt a pull to the orange egg.  That night, Blödhgarm came by to his house and told him to pick an egg.  Picking up the orange egg, he spent the night with it, and in the morning, Sirath hatched to him officially making him a Rider.  Blödhgarm had taken him to the kingdom of Ellesméra and shown him how great the bond really was.  He was also told there was another Rider within the Elves, but he wasn't sure of any details about him.

Blödhgarm sent him to Nasuada as an undercover page, so that the word would not get around to the public until they were ready for it to.  Now, here they were, standing in the heart of the kingdom of Alagaësia, about to take the journey of their life.  Still thinking, he didn't notice that Nasuada herself had walked up behind him until she spoke.

Alrighty then!  Almost 7 chapters done, and there's so much more!  Like when is Barzûl going to appear, and what's going to happen to Taeron and his cunning plan to sneak out?  Stay with me!

"Colbert, Sir Leroy and four other guards will be your escorts to Ellesméra, and they will stay with you until you leave for Eragon's mountains.  Is there anything I could do for you before you go?"

"No, I do not think there is.  I am so thankful for your hospitality, and am so honored to be in your presence.  Something my old village could only dream..."  Colbert remembered something.  It stirred deep inside of him and he finally pin pointed it.  How could he be so stupid to forget it?

"Actually, your Highness, there is something that I would like you to do if you are able."

"Of course, young Rider, anything."  Colbert whispered it into her ear, and she nodded.

"Yes, that is definitely possible."  Nasuada withhold a chuckle at the look on Colbert's face with her promise. How could something so small make this young Rider so happy?  Then she remembered that Colbert hadn't come from a very wealthily family.  It would feel good to be able to do this for him.  If she couldn't help Eragon, then it seemed right that she could help his students.

"Your majesty, we should be off."  Sir Leroy shook her from her thoughts.

"Oh, yes of course, Sir.  You should be off.  Remember, send a messenger when you arrive and another when you will leave."  Sir Leroy saluted and Nasuada turned to Colbert.

"And you young Rider, make sure you ask Eragon to scurry me when you get there.  Have a safe and amazing trip.  Good luck Colbert."  Nasuada bowed to both Colbert and Sir Leroy and she swiftly went back into the castle.

Sir Leroy and his four other guards mounted their horses, and Colbert mounted Sirath.  With a wing beat, Sirath lifted off the ground and Leroy clapped his horses flanks.  They headed East to Ellesméra, and every hour they had to stop and rest, because Sirath couldn't carry Colbert too far yet.

I'm so sorry Colbert, I'm letting you down.

No!  Sirath!  You are doing no such thing!  Don't even think that you are letting me down.  You are my dragon, and I'm not going to push you!  You will get stronger.  We will together.  You are amazing just the way you are.

    Thanks Colbert.

It was sunset and Sirath landed in a clearing by Leroy and the other guards.  He began searching for wood while the guards took out their food parcels.  When he had a decent amount of wood, he made a pile and took out two rocks, and set to striking a flame between them.

"You know, there is a magic word for 'fire'.  It lights it so you don't have to work that hard.  Though I posses no magic, I do know the word.  I can't help you after that."  Colbert's eyes lit up.

"Oh please!  Tell me!  I want to know!"  Leroy laughed and his companions with him.  So energetic, he thought.

"It's brisingr."  Leroy watched as Colbert said the word to the wood, though nothing seemed to come up.  As Colbert began getting more frustrated, Leroy stepped in.

"Colbert, as I said before, I don't know much about magic, but I think you have to reach your bond with your dragon to make the magic work.  You have to feel the word and the magic flowing through you."  With that, Colbert turned to the wood once more.

"Brisingr!"  A flame lept up from the wood and Colbert fainted.

The world came back slowly.  He could hear the horse footsteps pounding against the ground.  The smell of the forest overwhelmed him as he moved with the galloping horses.  His head hurt and his mind was jumbled.  He thought he could hear Sirath in the back of his head.  He sounded panicked, his voice was urgent, but Colbert just couldn't hear his mental voice or respond.  Hard hands gripped him and he felt as though he were bound to a saddle.  Shouting voices were around him, but he couldn't figure out what they were saying.  Everything went out again.

When he came to again, he heard a voice.  It sounded female, but not human.

"Colbert.  Colbert.  Can you hear me?  This is Arya, I am the leader of the elves, and Rider to Fïrnen."

He felt his head being lifted up, and water ran down his throat.  When he opened his eyes, he was staring into an elven face and then he realized what she had said.  Leader of the Elves!  Scrambling up, he tried to bow, but ended up flat on his face.  Arya suppressed a laugh as she helped him back into bed.

"Easy, Rider.  It's okay.  I think that you need to tell Sirath that you are okay, he is practically ripping apart Ellesméra."  Colbert didn't know what to do, he hadn't meant to have Sirath rip apart the elves home!

"Oh my gosh!  I'm so sorry!  I'll do whatever it takes to rebuild what was destroyed!"  He felt horrible.  Then he heard a laugh coming from none other than Arya herself!

"Colbert, it's okay, he didn't even do much damage."  Becoming more serious,

"Call him down, he's been circling the health ward for about a week now.  I'm worried about him.  He was a wreck when he got here, and all he's been doing is roaring so loud, it's starting to shake the buildings."  As if on cue, a mighty roar came from up above them.

COLBERT!!!  Colbert hear a huge thump as Sirath landed on the window sill outside his room.  As he tried to get his head through, his nostrils flared with frustration as his head was too big to fit through the window.  Laughing, Arya suggested that they all meet in the court yard.  It took two seconds for Colbert to try and jump out of bed, and a fall before Arya held him upright and helped him downstairs.  When they got to the court yard, Sirath roared and a flame of orange leapt from his mouth into the sky.  Both out loud and mentally, Colbert exclaimed,

Sirath was that fire?!?  Blinking, Sirath replied.

Yes, I think it was.  Throwing his hands around Sirath's thick neck, Colbert embraced his dragon for a long while.  They heard mighty wing beats and were in time to see a giant green dragon land beside Arya.

Greetings Colbert, Dragon Rider of Sirath.  I am Fírnen, dragon of Arya, mate to Saphira.  Immediately, both Colbert and Sirath bowed, feeling the overwhelming power that the dragon possessed.

Greetings oh great one.  We are humbled to be in your presence.  Fírnen's mental voice was kind as he looked upon these two young hatchlings.  Directing his thoughts to Arya,

Were we like that when we met Eragon?  All small and submissive?

No, I think you were too busy courting Saphira to bother with such small attendances.  Both of them laughed startling Colbert and Sirath.  At that moment, a younger elf appeared with a scared look on his face.  Addressing Arya,

"Kvetha Fricai.  What news do you bring?"

"Taeron and Mersoth have vanished, their beds were cold when we went in, and all of his belongings are gone.  A note was found, but all traces have vanished."
