Inheritance Cycle: Barzûl

After the defeat of Galbatorix, Eragon sets out to find a new home for the new era of Dragon Riders. With the knowledge that only the Eldunarí carry, they guide him across Alagaësia until they reach the destined home for the Dragon Riders. As they settle in, Eragon contacts Nasuada to tell of the place where they are settled, and to only share the information with the Riders who are able to make the journey. But when a new young Rider named Barzûl (Dwarf language means cursed with ill fate) becomes Eragon's third apprentice, the tables begin to turn. As time goes on, Barzûl begins to become eager in learning about Galbatorix and soon begins acting much like the overthrower of the Riders. Can Eragon help Barzûl before he seeps into the insane mind that Galbatorix was once enslaved in? Or will the Riders be destroyed before they are even rebuilt?

4. The First and Second Dragon Rider

"No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again." - Budda

A young looking boy walked the streets of Alagaësia.  He was maybe thirteen, with a bag in hand and papers sticking out, he looked as if he were an ordinary page, but he held something deeper.  Great news was to be carried by this young boy to the new Queen.  Quickening his pace, he came up to the first grand gate of the palace.  Looking up, he saw the gate curling to the sky.  Before he could lay a hand on it, the guards came alive.

"Who are you to come to the palace?"

"I am Colbert Petre, a simple page of the Kingdom.  I carry an urgent message for the Queen."

     "And that message?"

"Sir, the message is for the Queen's ears and her ears only"  Colbert was already starting to get annoyed with the guard.  And the guard had become annoyed with Colbert as well.  Seeing that escorting him to the Queen herself was the only option to get him to leave, he gave in.

"Very well, follow me, but don't be crying to me when she doesn't meet with you."  The castle gate guard lead Colbert into the courtyard beyond the gates.  Marching at a brisk pace, Colbert had to almost jog to keep up with him.  Reaching the front doors, two more guards stood at attention.

"Sir Leroy Veale.  Reporting to the Queen.  This page says he has an important message to bring."  Without a word, the two guards swung open the castle doors admitting the young page and the castle guard with him.  Taking two steps in, the heavy doors swung shut.

"Whoa."  Colbert couldn't help but mutter.  The castle guard looking down, couldn't help but smile to himself.  He remembered walking into the castle on his first day.  The great arches, rugs, finery, and expenses were more then the page could every afford or ever saw.  Leading Colbert up a bunch of stairs, and into the highest chamber there was, Colbert saw another two guards along with a mighty Urgal standing at attention in front of the doors.  Repeating what he had said to the previous guards, the urgal moved aside and opened the doors for them.  Sinking down to one knee, Sir Leroy bowed,

"Queen Nasuada, this page has news that he would like for you to hear.  He states it's for your ears and your ears only."  A regal looking woman stood looking out a window.  Though looking young in years, her body was worn form battles not just physically but mentally as well.

"Very well, you may leave us Sir Leroy."  Her voice was like chiming bells.  Bowing again, Sir Leroy backed out of the room.  Turning to Colbert, she addressed him.

"I know all my pages well enough to know that you aren't one of them, in fact, I haven't ever seen you around these parts before.  Why are you here?"  Speaking with confidence, Colbert answered.

"My Queen, something spectacular has happen.  Two dragon eggs have hatched.  One to an Elf named Taeron and the other to an unknown human boy."  A look of surprise and joy spread across Nasuada's face as the news was revealed.

"Thank you so much for the information.  What is your name did you say?"

     "I didn't.  I'm Colbert."

"Well, thank you Colbert, do you have any idea who this human Dragon Rider is?"  Colbert hesitated in answering.

"It's okay, being a Dragon Rider holds honor and fame.  It holds much for that of who rides a dragon."

"The human Dragon Rider is me, you highness."  A minute of silence engulfed the two as they stood looking at each other.

"May I ask, where you dragon is?"

"Flying, your highness.  I can call him down if you like. His scales are orange and his name is Sirath."

"Yes, if you would, can you bring him down?  How long since he hated?"

"Three weeks your majesty, and the elf's about a week.  I was summoned to Ellesméra after the elves had learned about his hatching.  The Taeron's dragon is Mersoth."

Sirath, will you come down?  The Queen would like to meet you.

Of course, Colbert, but I can't land where you are.  Perhaps the courtyard?

"Your majesty, don't you think it would be better to go to the courtyard?  Sirath can't land anywhere here."  Stuttering, the Nasuada answered.  She hadn't expected this young boy to be telling the truth.

"Ah...um...of course.  Let us go down."  Walking very stiffly, she lead the way our of her room and out into the hall.  The guards immediately snapped to attention.  Escorting both of them to wherever they needed to go.  Soon, Colbert and Nasuada stood out in the courtyard along with six guards including Sir Leroy, and beside them were eight urgals.  Without any warning, an orange, massive, bulk of a body landed inside the courtyard.  Colbert ran to the dragon and hugged it's neck.

Remembering his manners, he stepped back,

"Your Majesty, let me introduce you formally to Sirath."  The bulk of Sirath bent his head looking at the Queen with brilliant orange eyes.

Your Majesty, it is a pleasure to meet the Queen that overthrew the cursed Galbatorix.  Nasuada, still in awe of the dragon, managed a reply.

"Sirath, I think you are mistaken, I had no part in the defeat of Galbatorix.  That was the legendary Rider, Eragon and his dragon Saphira, who are waiting for you at his new home.  You will soon make the journey once Eragon thinks you are ready."

Nasuada, I think you are mistaken, without you, the Varden would've never been here in the first place.  You were the one that lead the battles the one that even Eragon and Saphira answered to.

"Then I thank you for your generous words.  If you will spend the night here, tomorrow you can start your journey to Ellesméra."  Bowing to both Colbert and Sirath, she ordered,

"Sir Leroy, show this young Rider to his room, and make it a room where Sirath can join him.  I must speak to Eragon."  Turning to Colbert and Sirath once again she bid them farwell.

"I will be busy all tonight, the kitchen will make sure you have enough food for both yourselves.  I must bid you a good night, and I will be here in the morning to see you off."  With that the Queen turned on her heel and entered the castle.  Once she was alone in her room once more, she muttered,

"Eragon where are you?  We need you now."
