Sandra Jones Is Dead

After Sandra Jones jumps off a cliff, a town is left reeling. As her family and friends provide pieces of information, secrets are revealed and more questions are asked than answered. What happened?

6. Dear Sandra Jones

Dear Sandra Jones,

You don't know me. We never spoke. My name is Nick - I was in your biology class. I’m only writing to let you know I found your body. The morning was beautiful: the sunrise made the sea sparkle like nothing I’d ever seen. For a moment, it was paradise. Then… Well, you ruined it. Sorry. You did. I wasn’t sure it was you, at first. Your face was all battered from the impact and the early birds inspecting. I could tell straight away you weren’t breathing, which I thought was a shame because it was such a nice morning and I’d have liked to sit with you and drink coffee on the beach. You only spoke to me once, but you were always kind. I would have liked to know you a bit better.

Why did you do it, Sandra? You were too far from the cliff to have just fallen. And I don’t know of anyone who wanted you dead. You were nice. You seemed happy. I don’t understand you, Sandra Jones. You never seemed this sad. Were you just that good at hiding it? I’d like to think someone knew you well enough to notice…

My therapist said writing to you might help. By the way, I have a therapist now. She’s called Joanne. She says I have post-traumatic stress disorder from finding your body. Oh, and I can’t walk on that beach anymore. All I can see is the blood encrusted on your hands, and the way the bruises closed your eyes so I didn’t have to and-

No. I can’t write any more. I can’t.

I’m sorry, Sandra Jones.
