3. Laughter is the Best Medicine

Bzzz. Bzzz.

My alarm vibrated on my night stand Friday morning, and I woke up with my head spinning. My stomach churned and anxiety pumped through my veins. Inhaling deeply, I tried to calm myself down, but I only ended up hyperventilating.

"Mom!" I cried.

Hear footsteps up the stairs echoed through the house and my bedroom door swung open.

"Oh sweetie!" she sighed, and sat beside me on my bed, rubbing my back. "Breathe in 1..2..Breathe out 1..2.."

Finally able to breathe, I curled into her chest. "I can't go to school today mom."

"Sweetie take some of your meds, and see how you feel in the afternoon."

"Fine," I groaned, leaning over to grab the pills off my night stand. I was a basket case.

"Call me if you need me," my mother cooed, kissing my forehead.

I awoke 2 hours later, still feeling slightly anxious. My phone vibrated, and I noticed that Luke had texted me 4 times.

8:30 am; Hey Emma, where are you? You're not skipping first class are you?

9:45 am; Hope I didn't freak you out by asking you to hang out..

9:55 am; I must've.. because you're skipping school to avoid me..

10:00 am; Emma, please tell me if something is wrong..

Immediately I replied to Luke, not wanting him to worry anymore.

Hey Luke, you didn't freak me out. Don't worry about that at all. I am just a little under the weather this morning.

Within seconds he replied.

Are our plans still on for tonight?

I quickly replied with an, "of course," and fell back asleep. I loved hanging out with Luke. I was still a little hesitant with what ever secrets he was keeping, but I felt so at ease with him. We could laugh and joke around without offending one another, and I just felt at home with him. With those thoughts I drifted back to sleep...

I kept in touch with Luke throughout the afternoon and evening. I had convinced my mom that along with my severe anxiety, I was also coming down with the flu so she kept me at home for the rest of the day. I spent my down time looking up graffiti pictures and tutorials, but there was no way I would ever be able to pull something like that off.

The evening dragged on, but finally 12:45 am rolled around. I threw on a pair of black skinny jeans, a grey hoodie, and my black converse. Checking my hair to make sure I looked alright, I then snuck out my bedroom window and made my way to the park. By the time I was there, Luke was already there sitting on the picnic table illuminated by a street light. As soon as he saw me, he hopped off the table and strided towards me.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, concerned.

I smiled, and looked him in the eyes. "So much better."

"You ready to do this?" he smirked.

I nodded enthusiastically. The next thing I knew, he grabbed my hand and we were running through the trees down the bank to the old train trestle.

"I figured it would be best if you started off your graffiti career here," he explained, handing me a bottle of spray paint.

"I have noooo idea what I'm doing," I admitted.

"Just draw or write what you love, or you're passionate about," he explained.

Grinning, I wrote in big red letters, "GREEN DAY RULES."

As I worked on my graffiti, Luke was working a little ways down from me.

"I'm all finished!" I announced. Luke jogged over to me, holding a flash light up to the graffitied wall.

"Green Day! So cool Emma!"

"Wow I never realized how awful and crooked it was," I sighed.

Luke started laughing, and I just stared at him.

"You painted right over a drawing of a Dick, I am so sorry for laughing."

Taking a second look, I burst out into laughter.

"Omg I never noticed that," I squealed like a school girl.

"Now come see mine!"

He grabbed my hand once again and led me to his wall, and shone the light on it.

KISS ME? Was written.

"D-did y-you write t-that?" I stuttered.

Luke nodded and flashed me a big grin. All of a sudden my whole plan to keep us friends crumbled, and my heart fluttered.

"Yes."

Luke leaned in slowly, wrapping his arms around my waist. As soon as his lips touched mine, my heart began to race and all of my worries disappeared...
