{Book 1 of the Speed Demons Series}
When you're in high school, love is a foreign word. You hear people use it, but what does it really mean? Ashton and Gwen have an idea. Now fresh out of high school, the two decide to "wait" on college and just enjoy life for a little while. But life doesn't really wait for anybody. It's forever moving and changing. Will Gwen and Ashton be able to overcome being adults or will their young age get in the way of being happy?

"I think I'm going to-"

"Ashton, don't do it-"

"You'll regret it, please-"

"Ashton, think about it. Is she really worth it?"

Ashton and his friends sit on the floor of Ashton's parent's basement. They would be sitting on furniture, but Ashton is working on moving out, which explains why it is more than barren.

They've been having this same conversation for over a month now, each time the same as before. Ever since they graduated high school, his friends all thought he was crazy. Though this time, he's very much serious. Perhaps he's been serious this whole time.

"Ashton, please listen to me, you're really young. You're only 19. Are you really sure this is something that is going to be good for the both of you? Not just you." One of Ashton's friends, Luke begins.

"Oh look at you!" Ashton says with a bitter drunken tone in his voice. "Think just because you're some big star that won a TV show that you automatically know everything about everyone's life and what's best for them!"

In freshman year, Luke auditioned for a singing competition and ended up winning. About a year later, he came out with his first album and girls all over the world had fallen for him. Even now, Luke is still at the peak of his career, always trying to give other people advice, even when people don't want it. He doesn't do it so they get mad, but he just wants to help. Luke also has a tendency to say things, that doesn't come across as helpful and when Ashton's drunk, everything is much worse.

"Ashton, don't start this again," Michael whines. Ashton and Michael are the closest of the four. Through high school, Michael lived with Ashton because Michael and his dad always had a lot of problems. He never told Ashton a lot of the details, but Ashton knew he was unhappy. Too much unhappiness can hurt someone. So being the good person Ashton is, he invited Michael to live with him. That was the best decision either one of them have ever made.

"I will do it this time," Ashton slurs. "I'm serious."

"Ash," Calum says. "Do you really want to be stuck with one person for the rest of your life?"

"I won't be stuck with her because I truly love her, but you wouldn't know what love is." Ashton rolls his eyes and stands up to walk across the room. He stumbles over his own feet and sits back down again a few feet away from the rest, with his back facing them. Calum does know what love is, for he fell in love with a girl named Sophia. She broke his heart and that's when he gave up on love. "I'm going to call her now and tell her."

"It's going to be a mistake," Michael says in a sing-song voices while the other two watch Ashton.

"Hey Gwen," Ashton begins to say. "So I need to ask you something."

"Enough of this," Luke snatches the phone out of Ashton's hand and tosses it over to Calum, who tells Gwen that Ashton is just drunk and not to worry. Luke stands with his hands on his hips and waits for Ashton to say something.

"What the hell, man? I need to ask her to marry me!" Ashton yells.

"No, you don't. You're just drunk and 19. Take some time and if in 3 years, you still want to marry her, go for it," Luke says.

"I don't need this." Ashton stands up, grabs his phone away from Calum, and marches upstairs. He really does love Gwen and would love more than anything to marry her, but his friends think that he's just foolish, simply because none of them knew what it was like to be in love. They tell him it's because he's drunk and that's why he feels the need to marry her.

Ashton knows what its like to love and he knows that he needs to marry her. But whenever he goes on about it, his friends would laugh and sneer at him, so he forced himself to get drunk so he could use it as an excuse for his insanity. He does know he's still young, but age is just a number... right?

"Ashton, I think I should drop you off at your new apartment." Michael slowly makes his way upstairs, unsure if Ashton is still upset about all of this. "The movers will probably be leaving shortly."

"I think that's a good idea," he agrees.

Michael leads Ashton out of the house. Ashton tries to walk straight, however he just couldn't even though he tried so hard to. Ashton clings onto Michael's shoulder to support himself. His mind races through many different topics, but he couldn't clearly pinpoint one and settle on it. They came in masses, swarming his mind, never clearing up long enough for him to just relax and think. It makes him dizzy, very dizzy.

"I think I'm going to be sick," Ashton mutters and just in time, Michael takes a step backwards. Ashton throws up on the middle of the sidewalks, right where Michael would have been standing. When Ashton is done, he sits down on the curb, facing the road. Michael slowly approaches him, resting a hand on his shoulder.

"Buddy, I think we should go." Michael helps Ashton stand back up, who continuously mutters profanity under his breath.

This is a normal occurrence for Ashton. The boys are well use to how he acts. Especially when he drinks because he drinks a lot. It became a very bad habit. None of his friends like it, especially his girlfriend.

It's very unhealthy, but what do teenagers know? He uses it as a way to relieve stress and make himself sound a little less "stupid". At least, all his friends found him a little stupid, merely because they just don't understand him.

"Michael? Ashton? What-" is all the voice from behind the two boys could say. The soft female voice is at a loss of words when she sees her boyfriend drunk to the point where he couldn't stand. She's seen him like this a few times, but each time pains her even more the next time. "When I got the call, I realized something was wrong, but I didn't think he'd be this bad."

"Gwen! It's so nice to see you!" Ashton slurs. He stumbles as he tries to hug her, but Gwen takes a step back. "Baby, what's wrong?"

"Michael, am I allowed to take him back to my place?" She asks him.

"He's all yours!" Michael takes his hands off Ashton's shoulders and walks away. Ashton sways back and forth, unable to stand on his own, so Gwen holds his hands and begins to walk with him back to her house.

"If I knew that I was going to run into you drunk off your ass this bad again, I would have brought my car. I knew something was wrong the minute you called me and what do I find? A hot mess," she says as she practically drags him a few blocks. Luckily, she didn't live very far, but she did live far enough to wipe both of their energy by the time they got to her mom's house.

"Baby, you never told me what was wrong," Ashton repeats. He is sat on the couch by Gwen and he clings onto her tightly, as if he thought he would never see her again.

"I don't like the fact that you have been drinking so much lately. It's irresponsible and I really think that you have a problem. I just want to make sure you're going to be okay." Tears fill her eyes as she talks and she speaks slowly. Her voice is very weak when she talks as well, but she tries to act strong for Ashton because she knows that he needs it right now.

"I'm not irresponsible and it isn't a problem," he mutters. He rests his weary head on her shoulder. "I promise."

"Then please tell me why you have been drinking so much. If it's not a problem, then tell me why I am so worried," she begs him.

"You are worried because you care about me," Ashton answers the second part, but never the first. He remains motionless and doesn't plan to talk again. However, he does know his girlfriend, so she will make him talk eventually.

"Ashton, please talk to me," she begs once more. Gwen knows that it's no use. Ashton probably won't tell her, but that's exactly what she is afraid of. She doesn't know if he trusts her enough to tell her. She hopes that he did, but she really isn't sure, especially because he has been acting like this for awhile.

Ashton is right though, she is worried because she cares about him. She is very worried. But he also worries about her just as much. He knows that he's eventually going to have to tell her, but he just doesn't know if he can explain it well enough for her to comprehend. He is still drunk.

Ashton takes Gwen's hands and squeezes them slightly so that she could feel his support this time. She isn't entirely sure why he is doing this or what he's thinking, but she doesn't fight it. She loves being close to Ashton. It's always like a sense of security for her. Next thing the two of them know, they were laying on the couch together, holding each other closely in their arms. Ashton's chin nestles close to Gwen's shoulder, his lips align at her cheek, so he can carefully plant a kiss on her whenever.

"Gwen," Ashton says.

"Yes, Ash," She says with her eyes closed. She moves closer to him when he speaks in a sweet soft voice.

"I love you," he says.

Gwen smiles wildly like she always does when he tells her that he loves her. "I love you too."

"I want to spend-" Ashton begins. He finds himself unable to continue. He felt as though he may vomit again, but he isn't sure if he really is going to. He waits a little while for his stomach to settle, but by the time that happens, he is sure that she is asleep already, so he almost didn't bother to continue. He thought that he might as well practice for the real thing at least, even if she is asleep. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

He feels relieved to say it out loud and to only Gwen. He knows the she wouldn't think he's crazy if he said it, at least he hopes that she wouldn't. But she's still asleep, making it much easier to talk about it.

"I want to spend the rest of my life with you waking up beside me and falling asleep next to me. I want to spend every waking moment with you because you deserve to be loved, ever hour, every minute, every second of your life. I would feel so honored to be that person, you wouldn't understand. I just want to be that person to love you forever and never let you go." He hugs her even tighter on the couch. He never wanted to let her go, ever. If he had control, he would never leave this moment.

"Ashton, I want to spend the rest of my life with you," Gwen replies to him, startling him. She says every word that he needs to hear so he could confirm that he isn't really crazy. At least, not in the way all his friends think.

"Will you marry me? I don't have a ring or anything, but I can certainly go-"

Gwen doesn't give him a chance to finishes his thought, for when she presses her lips to his he couldn't think straight. Actually, he couldn't think of anything at all. He was taken aback by her kiss, like he always is.

"You don't have to buy me a ring. It's a yes without one."
