9. The Year Continues

The first student council meeting of the year had begun.

"I officially call this meeting to order," Draco said, as head of the group.

"V.P. Silva, present," said a short blue alien.

"Secretary Mary, present," said a taller Cerean.

"Scribe Ronald, present," said Ronald.

"I introduce a motion to congratulate myself on re-election." When the others frowned, Draco added, "Oh yeah, and congratulations to you guys, too. First order of business: Choose a theme for the dance."

"Valentine dance?" suggested Mary.

"Space travel?" Silva suggested.

"Ewok music?" Draco suggested.

"Comics?"

"Puppets?"

"Zombies?"

"Soccer?"

"The Force?"

Ten minutes later, everyone was still thinking of suggestions.

"How about lightsabers?" Mary asked.

"Objection!" Draco replied. "It's been done before."

"I call for a vote," said Silva. "All for?" Mary raised her hand, as did Silva. "Two to one..."

Draco's scowl formed into a smile as he asked, "Who should organize the dance?"

"I will," said Mary. "Annabeth and Aidan wanted to help. Ronald, will you make some posters?"

All three raised their hands to Mary's proposal. "The vote is three to zero for Ronald to make posters."

Ronald grumbled. Like that went so well last time...

"Second order of business," said Draco. "Pick a fundraiser for the Lightsaber Fencing Tournament."

"How about a craft-and-bake sale?" asked Mary.

"Sounds good," Draco replied. "Third order of business: Is four minutes between classes enough time?"

Mary and Silva both disagreed with that.

"I agree," said Draco. "I move that we ask Master Yoda for eight minutes between classes."

When they asked Yoda, however, Yoda said no.

Draco sighed. "I hereby adjourn this council meeting."

Later, Ronald and Ammon worked on their homework together in the library.

"Man, this homework is tough," said Ronald.

"Tell me about it," Ammon replied. "It's not nearly as fun as lightsaber construction, even if Mr. Maulpres teaches that." This semester, they were learning how to build their own lightsaber. For second semester, lightsaber training would begin.

Ronald agreed.

"What did you get for the answer to number seven?" Ammon asked.

"'Telepathy' is the ability to read someone else's thoughts. What did you get?"

Ammon looked shocked, "Huh? My answer was three hundred and fourteen."

What? That can't be right. Unless... "Wait, are you doing the assignment for History of Jedi Skills?"

"No, I'm doing functions," Ammon replied.

"Oh no, we have math homework, too?"

Ammon shook his head. "It's going to be a long night."

The following week Ronald spent a lot of time helping Mary, Annabeth, and Aidan in getting ready for the dance. They spent a few afternoons working on posters. After they finished the last posters, Aidan suggested they go get some dinner. The cafeteria was already closed, however. Instead, they all went out for pizza. The pizza was good, Ronald thought, but it didn't compare to the twin sun-baked pizza his mother made at home. That was the best.

Ronald stayed up too late that night, so he had a hard time waking up. He thought he turned off the alarm instead of hitting snooze, because he awoke at 7:25 and barely made it to class on time.

Ronald wasn't sure if he was cut out to be a Jedi. Everyone else seemed to have a handle on it... Ammon was strong in the Force. Severus was very athletic. Eegan was calm and focused. Tegan had a lot of control and leadership. Annabeth was compassionate and kind. Ronald was a good artist, but he didn't know what that had to do with being a Jedi.
