16. The Jedi Holocron

It was true. Ronald cheated. But it was definitely an accident. Ronald was sure they would have won, even if Ammon did lose one round. And he admitted right away that it was him. Ammon's probably going to kill me now...I think I'll stay hidden until school is over.

A few days later, after school he went out for a walk. He usually met with one of his firends to do homework, but now they all held him in disgrace. He had strolled the outside of Galactic City once before with them when they went out for pizza, but no doubt Ammon would turn him out if he invited him to come. And so he just went by himself. A place he knew he could get some additional exercise and be alone.

On the trip, he saw a wanted poster. WANTED: DARTH VADERMORT. Ronald sighed. How many times had he noticed one?

But then, ahead of him, Ronald saw something lurking that he doubted truly existed...until now. The cloak and lightsaber clipped to his belt made it unseparable. Is that really--who I think it is?

The cloaked figure saw him and ignited his lightsaber. "Going somewhere, little boy?" it said in a dark, barritone voice.

Ronald gasped. He stepped back, then ran for it. But then he tripped over his feet. Before he could get up, the cloaked figure was on him. Ronald reached for his lightsaber, but based on how quickly Pansy had beaten him, he doubted it would do him any good. He backed against a ledge, then noticed a soda can someone had littered and threw it at him. The figure staggered back...and advanced again.

Suddenly, a lightsaber hummed out of the air. The cloaked figure stepped back and ran for his fighter without a word. Coward! Ron thought, trying to hide a smile. The lightsaber retracted, and Ronald was shocked to realize the Jedi holding it was Mr. Maulpres.

"Mr. Potter, why are you so far from the Temple?" Maulpres asked.

"I--I didn't notice I had gone so far," said Ronald.

"We must leave," Maulpres replied. "Come with me. Now."

Ronald, still in shock, followed Mr. Maulpres. He had several questions to ask, but he didn't know if Mr. Maulpres wanted to talk to him. After all, this was the teacher who hated him, who had belittled him and been deliberately unfair several times...and had barely saved his life. "Mr. Maulpres...why did you save me?" he asked finally. "I thought--"

"You may dismiss with the thoughts, Potter," Maulpres interrupted. "I did not think you should die for being difficult to handle. The lower levels of Coruscant are a dangerous place, especially for children."

Ronald was still shocked. Mr. Maulpres came all the way out here--because I was in danger? "Who was that?" he asked, although he thought he knew the answer.

"A monster of sorts," he replied. "Although I knew the Sith would return one day, I never thought I would live to be a part of it. Darth Vadermort is a Sith Lord, and he was recently seen in the news."

Both remained quiet for the rest of the walk. When they returned home, Mr. Maulpres said, "Now Potter, don't wonder again without permission, or I just might give you a detention. Up to your room, and do not tell anyone what has happened this afternoon."

Ronald headed to his dorm, but the idea of the afternoon's events continued to elude him. Finally, he asked Ammon if he wanted to talk, and said it was urgent. Although Ammon agreed, he seemed reluctant.

"Do you want Annabeth to come, too?" he asked.

"Yes," said Ronald. "Do you know where she is?"

"Annabeth is in her dorm doing homework," said Ammon.

10 minutes later, Ronald, Annabeth, and Ammon sat in a circle around the fireplace.

"...do you really think Darth Vadermort is right here, in the Coruscant underlevels?" Annabeth asked upon hearing Ronald's explanation.

"Yes," said Ronald. "I saw his lightsaber, and his mask. Mr. Maulpres wasn't sure if was him, but he said it was likely. And if so, the Sith will return."

"Let's just hope there aren't others," said Ammon.

Ronald gasped. "Do you think so?"

"I don't think so," said Annabeth. "The Sith are powerful to destroy, but while he may have an apprentice, the Sith cannot build anything lasting. Vadermort will need help if he is to build up an army, and if no one knows about him, it will not be likely."

"If he returns, you don't think he'll try to kill you, do you?" Ammon asked hopefully.

"Most likely," said Ronald. "He tried to kill me just an hour ago."

"And to think...I've been worrying about my exams." There seemed to be genuine fear in Annabeth's voice now.

"Wait, you're forgetting one thing," said Ammon. "There are tons of Jedi Masters here, and only one of him. If Vadermort is so scared of dealing with Mr. Maulpres alone, I doubt he'll stay and fight for long."

Ronald nodded. Wouldn't bet on that, though... "Hey, Ammon, I'm sorry...for, you know, about what happened in the tournament. I just really wanted our team to win...and I really wanted you to beat Severus." He paused. "I guess I just don't have good control of the Force."

"It's OK," said Ammon. "I know you just wanted to help. Ya know, it's not easy to turn off a lightsaber using the Force. It's like Yoda said. You have potential, but you've been working on it for less than a year."

"Thanks," said Ronald. "Can we be friends again?"

"You betcha," said Ammon. They both fist-bumped each other. "I also think Annabeth deserves an apology."

Why? Oh yeah... "I'm sorry, Annabeth. For making our team lose. But I swear, it wasn't--"

"On purpose?" Annabeth cut him off. "Apology accepted. Is that why you've been avoiding me and the others?"

"Yes," said Ronald.

Later that night, Ronald made his way to the Jedi Temple Libraries, while most of the teachers were asleep. The library was closed, but conveniently, Librarian Lackbar had forgotten to lock the back door. Ronald snuck inside and found a row of holocrons. He quickly found the one he needed and activated it. It spoke in a monotone voice:

"The hour of the Sith draws near. One thousand years ago, the Sith were purged by the Jedi. And yet, a single Sith named Darth Bane survived. He trained a Sith to pass on his skills when he died. While they have lived in the Sith fortress at the south of Coruscant, the chain has gone on and on for 804 years. And now, the evil Darth Vadermort plots to expose the Sith and purge the Jedi. He hasn't an army yet, but he will in good time. And if he succeeds, the Jedi Order will be no more."

The holocron stopped. Ronald was shocked at what he had heard. He quickly put the holocron where he had found it and made his way through the back door. However, Mrs. Hilton noticed him. "Where do you think you're going at such a late hour?"

"I--I was looking for a holocron. When I was walking around town, I was attacked by Darth Vadermort. Thanks to Mr. Maulpres, I was able to escape. I went looking in the library to find a way to stop him before he can destroy us. I know it's hard to believe, but you've got to--"

"I believe you," she said. "I'm afraid our worst fears have been realized, then. But this is not something you can do yourself. Would you like me to help you?"

"Yes," said Ronald. "I'll ask Annabeth and Ammon if they want to help me."

So this was the plan: Mrs. Hilton would fly them to the secret Sith base. Then Ammon, Annabeth, and Ronald would go and stop him if they could. If they failed, then Mrs. Hilton would get help.
