18. Leaving The Jedi Temple

It was the day of the final exam. All the Padawans stood in a semicircle around Yoda. Around Yoda there was a line of boulders.

"Your final exam, this is, hm?" Yoda said. "Use the Force, you will. Lift one boulder, you must. Heh heh heh!"

Silva was first. He accidentally tipped over the boulder instead of lifting it. Draco lifted it slightly, but it floated nonetheless. Vernon managed to lift it, but struggled to keep it in the air. Annabeth used both hands and lifted it effortlessly. With a single hand, Severus had no less trouble. Ammon lifted it easily, and it shook while in the air. Bill used the Force to call a droid in which lifted it for him. Yoda was impressed.

"Your turn, it is, hm?" Yoda said.

My turn to fail... Ronald thought miserably. After this it's off to Plant School. He gritted his teeth as he extended his hand toward the boulder. Well, this is it. The boulder wobbled, but didn't lift. Ronald closed his eyes, and his expression softened. I guess I can stop trying so hard...

All the kids looked on with wonder. Even Vernon's jaw dropped.

Ronald opened his eyes. "What? Why is everyone looking at me like that?"

"Ron...look behind you!" said Ammon.

Ronald did, and grinned. The entire ring of boulders was suspended midair above his head. "Oh! I'm doing it!" He lowered the boulders without effort. Everybody is looking at me differently, and for the first time, it's not because I messed something up! All my hard work finally paid off!

"Hmm...impressive, that was," said Yoda. Ronald thanked him, and he went on. "Hmm...much hesitation, I sense in you. Not a Jedi, you wish to become, hm?"

"Huh?" Ronald thought long and hard. "Well, I guess I could try one more year..."

Yoda laughed.

Later, it was finally time to go home. After saying goodbye to Shi-Fara, Tegan called to Ronald, "Bye, Ronald! I can't wait to see more of your comics in the school paper! You've been a great friend."

"Thanks! Bye, Tegan!" Ronald replied.

Vernon walked up to him next. "Hey, Ron, I didn't know you could use the Force like that. Pretty cool."

Ronald turned. "Huh? Well, thanks, well, I--"

"Hey, don't get such a big head about it!" Vernon interrupted. "I'm just glad you didn't drop one of those stones on us." He turned and left with Severus and Pansy.

Well, I won't miss them this summer, Ronald thought to himself.

Just then, Bill and Eegan walked by. "Have a good summer, Ron!" said Bill.

"See ya!" said Eegan.

"You too!" said Ronald. "See ya, Bill! Bye, Eegan!"

Ammon came next. "Have a good summer, Ronald. I'll let you know if I can come visit Tatooine."

"Cool!" said Ronald, and then they both used Force-deflect as they fist-bumped, causing them to hit in between empty air. That was cool. "Bye, Ammon!"

"Bye!" said Ammon, and climbed aboard his bus.

And then Annabeth came. "So, Ron, maybe I'll see you around this summer? You should give me a call."

"Oh, um, yeah! Sure!" Ronald stammered.

Annabeth looked up. "Oh, my ship is here! Bye, Ronald!" She gave him a hug, then kissed his cheek briefly. Ronald waved, and then RW-12 rolled in. T-3PO was with him.

RW-12 beeped frantically. "What?" Ronald replied. "Beep bo bloop..."

"RW says he has some things for you!" T-3PO translated. "Your schedule for next year, summer reading list...more paperwork."

"Thanks," said Ronald, and took the papers.

Yoda was last to say goodbye. "See you next year, I will, hm? Learn to fly, you will!"

"Learn to fly?" Ronald asked. "You mean, like I'll learn to become a better Jedi?"

"Not looked at your schedule, have you? Heh heh heh!"

Ronald stepped onto the ramp of his bus. "Bye, Master Yoda!" As the bus took off, Ronald reached for his backpack. My schedule? Let's see... He pulled out his papers. Advanced Force use...more Physical Ed. with Kitnum...Hyper-algebra...STARFIGHTER FLIGHT TRAINING?!

Ronald looked ahead. Who needs Pilot Academy? I'm going to be a Jedi! He smiled as he remembered his family. What a fun summer he would have with Oliver!
