10. A Ball

Ronald still felt bad about his believed role in Draco's election, and wanted to apologize. So right before the school dance, that's what he did.

"Don't worry about it," Bill replied with a smile. "I found something I like better than politics...music!" He opened the door to show Ronald the equipment at the back, already set up. "Now I'm a DJ!" He sat down and put on the headphones. "Alright, everybody! Let's dance!"

Ronald looked around. Shoot! Everyone I know is dancing. Who am I supposed to hang out with?

After getting a drink from the concession stand, he continued his search. He found Tegan and Ammon quickly, who were dancing together near a disco ball.

"Hey, Ron, want to join us?" Ammon asked.

"Oh, um, not yet..." Ronald replied, and walked away.

As Ronald continued to wander around the dance room, he finally noticed Annabeth, who also happened to be alone.

"Ronald, aren't you going to dance?" she asked. "You'll have to if you're on the committee, right?"

"Well, I...don't really know how," Ronald said, offering her the truth.

Oh. "It's easy!" Annabeth replied with a smile. "Watch, you just listen to the music...and move your arms and legs!" At those words, Annabeth began to dance in place. Ronald did the same, and started moving his limbs slightly.

As Severus and Vernon passed, they both snickered. Ronald blushed.

"Don't worry about how you look," said Annabeth. "Everyone looks a little silly when they're dancing!"

And then the music grew louder and the lights grew brighter. Annabeth began to dance enthusiastically, and Ronald, who was starting to get the hang of it, joined her.

Eventually the music slowed, and Bill announced, "OK, we're going to slow things down now for a couple dance."

Annabeth turned to Ronald. "Do you...want..." she stammered.

"Oh, of course!" Ronald replied. We're totally trapped by other couples! "Um, where do we--"

"Like this," said Annabeth, guiding Ronald's hand toward her waist and then doing the same. As the music started, they started to waltz slowly.

I hope she can't tell how sweaty I am! Ronald thought to himself.

Eventually, Bill announced, "And that's all for tonight! Thanks for dancing!"

Annabeth let go of Ronald's waist. "Thanks for the dance, Ron!"

"You're welcome," Ronald replied, and turned to leave.

***

Ronald had a hard time falling asleep the next few nights; he didn't know why. At first he thought he'd drunken too much fizzy during the dance, but that didn't explain the next few nights. He did feel nervous; he still wasn't good at Force-lifting, but he was trying. He could lift books, though--a book. And only small paperbacks. Yoda kept telling him to "try not" but that didn't make any sense to him.
