"Fight those demons." - Afraid by the Neighbourhood

Vera's POV

The scariest part was I knew who exactly it was. But Mr.Hood didn't believe me, no one ever did. I stared deep into Arabella's eyes. I tried to swallow the truth because I knew she would hate me forever if I told her.

"Arabella, don't worry about me okay?" I sighed.

"Then who will, c'mon Vera we're friends." Friends? The word felt so foreign to me.

"I'm fine, trust me." Stop lying Vera.

"Vera-" Arabella grabbed my wrist I flinched as I pulled my arm away. Arabella looked at me with a glint of hurt.

"Arabella just leave me alone." I bit my lip as I got up from my chair and walked to another corner in the common room. Arabella stood there for a few seconds just processing and staring at the wall. A wave of guilt hit me making me nauseous. I wanted to spit out the truth. To tell her every gory detail of what I saw. A little voice in my head stopped me. Remember what he said? I started shivering as his words echoed in my mind. "Sometimes the truth needs to be caged and buried, understand?"

''Vera?" I turned my head. My eyes widen as my jaw dropped. No. Not Nick. Anyone, but him. His matching blue eyes pierced into mine.

"Nick." Tears threatened to pour out of my eyes as my father stood before me.

"What are you doing here?"

"I'm the new guard." I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Why here?" The temptation to punch him grew stronger as I clenched my fist.

"They were looking for new workers, so here I am." He smiled showing his yellowed grimy teeth that he was rewarded with after years of drinking.

"How about Charlie?" The image of a 9 year old boy with dirty blond scruffy hair appeared in my mind. Charlie was the sweetest boy you could ever meet. He gave me a rose the day I was sent to Griffin. I still have the remains of the dead rose hiding under my bed.

"Karen is taking care of him."

"Karen?" Who the hell is Karen?

"Oh you haven't met Karen yet right." I narrowed my eyes at Nick.

"Karen is my fiancee." My breathing went shallow as I stared.

"Does she know you're a drunken idiot that spends his whole day sipping on cheap beer?" I spat as I ground my teeth in anger. My vision became lightly tinted with red.

"I changed my ways since then," he paused,"forgive me Vera please?" The expression he wore looked real, I could see a small glimpse of the man who use to be my father rather then a drunkard.

"I-I." I stuttered, failing to say 'forgive you'. He doesn't deserve the forgiveness. Remember the bruises, the lonely nights in an apartment filled with nothing other than broken beer bottles, and the smell of Budweisers with the musk of strange men.

"I can't forgive you," I stood up looking him coldly in the eye. I turned to the guard. "May I leave?" The guard nodded his head as he took my wrist leading me to my cell. I sat down and looked out the window. I was the only few ones who were trusted to have a window in their cell. Many times I enjoyed the luxury, but last night it destroyed everything I knew.

There were two figures. One obviously Luke's and the other was unknown. What were they doing out so late? I thought to myself. I slowly observed them as they followed the trail of the man. My eyes watched as they hid behind a bush when the man turned around in paranoia. In the dim glow of the moon I could see who the man was, the psychologist, Dr.Harrison. Dr.Harrison slowly walked in a circle behind the bush as he waited for the two patients to come out. Soon Luke and the other stranger slowly crept out the bush. A few seconds passed as the duo turned around. All I could see was violent hand gestures and a confrontation. Then, I heard a blood curdling scream. I was too caught up in the moment to yell or warn the guards.

I stood there stunned watching as the stranger plunged a knife into Dr.Harrison's chest causing him to stagger back. The screaming louden as the patient continued stabbing relentlessly at Dr.Harrison. Then, there was a moment of silence as Dr.Harrison collapsed onto the ground. The knife slipped out of the person's hand as they stumbled back realizing what they did. Luke just stood there. Watching. The person next to Luke began talking,"What the hell did I just do?" That voice, it was a female. My eyes widen in recognition. No, it possibly couldn't be. Suddenly the figure crumpled to the ground falling to the ground onto their knees.

Suddenly the blinding lights and wailing sirens went off. I could hear the marching of guards echoing in the hallway. Luke frantically looked around. He quickly scooped up the girl as he sprinted away from the crime scene.

The events of last night slowly cleared being replaced by the cracked surface of cement. I hated what I saw last night. It frightened me, heck it scared me shitless. But nothing could compare to the moment when I recognized the voice. I refuse to believe it. It possibly couldn't be her. It was Arabella. The grease of her dark blond hair shining with the gleam of the full moon.

When I saw her earlier in the common room she looked completely lost, innocent even. Like she had no idea that she just committed a ruthless murder. The whole time she talked to me I couldn't think, every word she said would be replaced with the blood curdling scream. I tried to tell her, but something was holding me back. I tried to investigate, of course it was cut short by Mr.Hood and Mr.Hemmings.

"Ms.Melrose?" I blinked as I saw Nick leaning against the door frame.

"Yes Nick?"

"Call me dad," he sighed,"also I have some news." I raised my eyebrow.

"And that is?" I deadpanned.

"I'm now your personal guard." Ah hell no! Not that son of a gun, never.

"Says who?" I seethed.

"Mr.Hood." He said smugly. I knew it. He hasn't changed at all. He's still the selfish bastard that was drunk more than he was my father.

"Can I please have my privacy?" I huffed.

"Of course." He left the door, leaving me alone. I laid in bed doing nothing. Staying motionless.

"May I see her?" A voice said outside the door. My eyes open as they darted to the door.

"She's busy." Nick said.

"Oh okay." Everything went quiet as I heard footsteps leading away.

"Wait!" I shouted, covering my mouth with my hand. You don't even know the person. What if it's Luke?

"Let them come in." I mumbled. There was a short moment of silence until the door slowly open. It was the last person who I wanted to see, Arabella. She was shaking and her hair was disheveled. I gave her a small smile.

"Sit here." I pointed to the bed. She plopped onto the bed and started fiddling with her fingers.

"Arabella are you okay?" She slowly raised her head. The look in her eyes, she looked lost almost mad.

"Vera?" She whispered in a mousy voice, very unlike the usual Arabella.

"Yes?"

"I have a question and you have to answer honestly."

"Of course." I sighed.

"A-are you real?" She stuttered. My mouth slightly gaped open.

"Arabella," I took a deep breath,"why would you ask that?" Arabella going mad, bonkers. She started questioning my existence. It's Luke's fault.

"It's just sometimes I think you're just my imagination because you just disappear." Disappear.

"I'm real okay," I paused trying to find the right words,"I'll be here for you always." I gulped. I'm lying. You can't lie Vera you can't- Shut up! I yelled inside my head.

"Also, I have this weird feeling I did something wrong," She dropped her head as I saw a small bead of sweat moving down her forehead.

"You did nothing wrong." I managed to give her a fake smile. I tried to shake out the events that took place outside out of my head.

"I don't know anymore Vera I woke up to a small blood stain on my uniform." I froze.
