27. The Two Towers - Chapter 4

Grima was thrown out of the hall and rolls down the stairs, "Argh! I've only ever served you my lord" Grima tells Theoden as he crawls backwards, away from the King. "Your leechcraft would have had me crawling on all fours like a beast!" Theoden hisses as he casual walks after Grima, "Send me not from your sight!" Grima says. Theoden raises his sword to kill Grima, but is stopped by Aragorn as I stand in front of Grima. "No my lord! No my lord. Let him go" Aragorn tells Theoden, "Enough blood has been spilt on his account" I whisper. I turn around and offer my hand to Grima, but he only spits on it and runs off through the crowd "Get out of my way!" he shouts and rides out of Edoras. "Hail, Theoden, King!" Aragorn shouts out to the crowd, they all get on one knee including Aragorn, while I just bow my head at him. "Where is Theodred? Where is my son?" Theoden questions.

The Rohirrim are gathered for Theodred's funeral, Theoden leads the way with his son behind him, carried towards the tomb on a bier made out of shields and spears. Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and I all follow behind Theodred's body. Eowyn starts to sing as the men pass the body to the women, who place him in the tomb.

"Bealocwealm hafo freone frecan forth onsended
giedd sculon singan gleomenn sorgiende
on Meduselde baet he ma no waere,
baet he ma nowere is, burh niedig rest.
And maegen deorost.
Bealo"

(An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing sorrowing minstrels
in Meduseld that he is no more,
That he is nowhere anymore, for his necessary rest.
And that he is the dearest kinsman.
Killing took him)

Theoden stands, with Gandalf and myself, at his son's shut tomb. "Simbelmyne, ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son" Theoden tells us as he holds up the flower, "Alas, that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger. That I should live to see the last days of my house" he says. "Theodred's death was not of your making" Gandalf tells the King, "No parent should have to bury their child" Theoden says and starts to cry. "He was strong in life. His spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers. Westu hal. Ferou, Theodred, Ferou" I say (Be-thou well. Go-thou, Theodred, go-thou) I turn to leave but something catches my eye over in the distance. I see two children riding a horse, when one fell off. I run over there and see a boy on the ground and a little girl on the horse, "What is your name?" I ask the girl, "Freda. That is Eothain" she tells me. "Your safe now, Freda" I say as I get Eothain back on the horse and lead it towards the halls of Edoras.

The two children eat the soup they were given as Eowyn is by their sides, "They had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the Wildmen are moving through Westfold, burning as they go, every rick, cot and tree" Eowyn says to Theoden. I sit beside Aragorn and watch as Theoden and Gandalf talk it out. I wave my hand about as Aragorn blows smoke in my face from his pipe, Gimli laughs at us, causing Theoden to look over our way. "Ride out and meet him head on. Draw him away from your women and children. You must fight" I tell the King, he quickly stands, "You have two thousand good men riding North as we speak. Eomer is loyal to you His men will return to fight for their king" Aragorn says. "They will be three hundred leagues from here by now! Eomer cannot help us. I know what is that you want of me. But I would not bring further death to my people. I will not risk open war" Theoden says as he walks over to us, "Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not" I tell him. "When last I looked, Theoden, not Naevys nor Aragorn, was king of Rohan" Theoden says, "Then what is the King's decision?" Gandalf asks him.
