6. Chapter 6

Frodo, Sam and I have just left the Green Dragon and now making our way home, "Good night Sam" Frodo and I say as we make our way up to Bilbo's house. Frodo opens the door and we see papers flying around and the windows are open, I pull a dagger out and hold a finger to my lips to hush Frodo. I whirl around to stab the intruder only to meet face-to-face with Gandalf "Is it secret? Is it safe?" he asks Frodo, not caring about the dagger I'm holding at him. Frodo opens a chest and moves around papers to find the envelope, I notice that Gandalf is jumpy at the slightest of noise. "Ha!" Frodo says as he holds up the envelope to Gandalf, who takes it and throws it into the fire "What are you doing!" Frodo asks but Gandalf ignores him and stares at the melting envelope. I grab a pair of tongs and take the ring out of the fire "Hold out your hand Frodo. Its quite cool" I tell him and drop it into his palm, "What can you see? Can you see anything?" Gandalf asks him. "Nothing. There's nothing" Frodo informs us and I hear Gandalf sigh, "Wait. There are markings. Its some form of Elvish. I can't read it" Frodo tells us "There are a few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here" Gandalf says, "Mordor!" Frodo repeats. "In the common tongue is says; One Ring to Rule Them All, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them" I inform Frodo.

We sit down at the table and Frodo places the Ring in the middle, "This is the one Ring. Forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. Take by Isildur from the hand of Sauron himself" Gandalf tells Frodo, "Bilbo found it. In Gollum's cave" Frodo points out and I nod my head. "Yes, for sixty years the Ring lay quiet in Bilbo's keeping prolonging his life. Delaying old age. But no longer Frodo. Evil is stirring in Mordor. The Ring has awoken. Its heard its Master's call" I tell him, "But he was destroyed. Sauron was destroyed" Frodo says, looking at us for confirmation. We all glanced down at the Ring as whispers were heard coming from it. "No Frodo. The spirit of Sauron endured. His life force is bound to the Ring and the Ring survived. Sauron has returned. His orcs have multiplied. His fortress at Barad-Dur is rebuilt in the land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this Ring to cover all the lands of a second darkness. He is seeking it. All his thoughts is bent on it. The Ring earns above all else to return to the hand of its Master. They are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord. Frodo, he must never find it" I inform him. "Alright" Frodo says as he snatches the Ring up and walks out of the room "We put it away. We must never speak of it again. No one knows its here. Do they? Do they Naevys and Gandalf?" he asks us as we follow him out, "There is one other who knew Bilbo had the Ring. We looked everywhere for the creature Gollum but the enemy found him first. I don't know how long they torched him. Admist the endless screams and insane babble they discerned two words" Gandalf informs Frodo. "Shire! Baggins! But that would lead them here!" Frodo shouts. "Take it Gandalf and Naevys!" Frodo says as he holds the Ring out to us, we back away from it. "Take it!" he shouts "No Frodo" I tell him, "You must take it!" he tells us "You cannot offer us this Ring" Gandalf says, "I am giving it to you!" Frodo says. "Don't! Tempt us Frodo" I say and Frodo takes back the Ring, "We dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand Frodo, we would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through us, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine" I tell him. "But it cannot stay in the Shire!" Frodo points out, "No! No it can't" Gandalf agrees "What must I do?" Frodo asks us.

Frodo quickly grabs clothes from a wardrobe "You must leave, and leave quickly" Gandalf tells him, "Where? Where do I go?" Frodo asks "Get out of the Shire. Make for the village of Bree. Naevys will accompany you" Gandalf informs us as I start to strap on my weapons. "Bree? What about you?" Frodo questions "He will be waiting for us. At the inn of the Prancing Pony" I inform them both, "And the Ring will be safe there?" Frodo asks as he packs food. "Frodo. I don't have any answers. I must see the head of my order. He is both wise and powerful. Trust me Frodo, he'll know what to do" Gandalf tells him. "You'll have the leave the name Baggins behind you. For that name is not safe outside the Shire. We'll travel by day and stay off the road" I inform Frodo as I came and stand next to him, "We can cut across country easily enough" he suggests. I placed my hand on his shoulder as we stood before Gandalf "My dear Frodo. Hobbits really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about them in a month and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you" Gandalf says. "Get down!" I say as I hear a noise coming from the window, I place an arrow in my bow while Gandalf gets his staff and moves towards it. He quickly jabs it into the flower bed and a grunt was heard, Gandalf reaches out and pulls Sam through the window and onto the table. "Confound you Samwise Gamgee! Have you been ears dropping?" Gandalf asks a scared hobbit, "I haven't been dropping no ears. Sir honest. I was cutting the grass under the window there. If you follow me" Sam tells us "A little late for trimming the verge, don't you think?" I ask him as I put my bow and arrow away and help Frodo from the floor. "I heard raised voices" Sam tells us "What did you hear? Speak!" Gandalf shouts, "Nothing important. That is I heard a great deal about a ring and a dark lord and something about the end of the world, but please Mr Gandalf Sir, please don't hurt me. Don't turn me into anything...unnatural" Sam begs. "No? Perhaps not. I've thought of a better use for you" Gandalf tells him as he smiles mine and Frodo's way.
