Flowers for Algernon

Lyrics for a song inspired by Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys.

I may record it properly and enter in into the poetry contest, but what do you guys think?

1. Flowers for Algernon Lyrics

When I first started I wasn’t that bright

My letters; upside down, I couldn’t even write

My name is Charlie Gordon I worked at a bakery

Some doctors tried to test me, it just looked like ink

Splattered on a blank white page, no hint

Of the all images other people see

I think I failed the test, though I wanted to pass

It’s just too bad these things never last

I met a mouse named Algernon

Famed for his brain his mind was strong

He taught me how to solve a maze

So I bought flowers for his grave

The doctors gave me drugs to make me smart

And an operation as a kick-start

Then they put me through therapy

Gradually the tests started to work

Though thinking made my poor head hurt

But eventually I beat Algernon

I think I failed the test, though I wanted to pass

It’s just too bad these things never last

They told me “The more intelligent you come

The more troubles you have, son.”

Little did they know how true their words were

Memories emerged in the form of nightmares.

Bringing anger that left me scared

The processes of a miracle began to occur

I think I failed the test, though I wanted to pass

It’s just too bad these things never last

I met a mouse named Algernon

Famed for his brain his mind was strong

He taught me how to solve a maze

So I bought flowers for his grave

My intelligence grew

A genius they called me soon

But these things never last

One day Algernon faced a test

They looked inside found his brain a mess

He was deteriorating

I started to look, but with no luck

For a cure for my cruel fate

But there was nothing I could do

As the days passed I forgot more and more

So much more terrible than it was before

When I didn’t know what knowledge felt like

Then one day, Algernon died

I buried him carefully outside

Placed flowers on his grave

I think I failed the test, though I wanted to pass

It’s just too bad these things never last

I met a mouse named Algernon

Famed for his brain his mind was strong

He taught me how to solve a maze

So I bought flowers for his grave

Now it’s time for me to sign off

Leave my last progress report

Please remember Algernon
