Tales of the Invisible

"I don't need a cloak to become invisible." -J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. There are many stories about the Golden Trio, many stories about evil wizards, and even people's own characters, but did you ever stop to think about the people at Hogwarts who are hardly mentioned? This will be a series of one-shots dedicated to the side characters that are only mentioned once or twice. The "invisible" ones. Mild cursing, but one a few words.

1. The Perks of Sally-Anne Perks

"Perks, Sally-Anne!"

She could still remember the day she came to Hogwarts. She had been so excited and enthusiastic- taking in all the new sights and smells and just one glance at the majestic castle had nearly overwhelmed her, even more so when it was her turn to be sorted. Her mind had been a raging storm of mixed emotions- fear, nervousness, joy, excitement, and more.

She had sat on the same spot many had before her, and cautiously put on the tattered hat.

"Hufflepuff!" it shouted.

On September 1st, 1991, Sally-Anne Perks was sorted into Hufflepuff.

Her excitement turned to slight disappointment, as no one had really paid attention, seeing as she was right behind "Potter, Harry"- the famous "Boy Who Lived".

Slight disappointment turned to sadness and lonliness when she spent more and more time at Hogwarts. The reason?

No one noticed her. She wasn't trying to be an attention-seeking brat, but it was a fact.

Even in her own house, no one really noticed her, as if they weren't even aware of her presence. To Ravenclaws, Gryffindors, Slytherins, even her fellow Hufflepuffs, she was nothing more than a small, microscopic speck in the world. In her fifth year, one professor even forgot to put her name on the list for people taking OWLs! But she couldn't blame him.

She never raised her hand in class, she wasn't a Quidditch player, she wasn't particularly good at a specific subject, and she had no friends save for the ghosts and possibly Susan Bones (did sharing a compartment that one time count?).

Sally-Anne Perks wasn't an outcast, though. Sweet Luna Lovegood was an outcast among her peers, poor girl, but she still got noticed. No, Sally-Anne wasn't an outcast, she was invisible.

Invisible people were doomed to forever stay in the shadows of other people; from the people who had the dimmest of lights to the people who shined as bright as the sun (ahem, Harry Potter). They had nobody who truly cared, only the people that give them false and sweet-sounding words to disguise their longing for a visible person, someone who at least gave off a little bit of light, and maybe even someone who shined the brightest of them all.

Sally-Anne Perks wasn't the best at school, but she wasn't stupid.

Many Hufflepuffs were doomed to be invisible, and it was just her luck she got caught in it all. After all, Hufflepuff was the house out of the four houses that was the least notable. The invisible people.

Hell, the only thing notable relating to Hufflepuff was Cedric Diggory, and he died.

Yes, no matter what, Sally-Anne Perks would always be invisible, even as she graduated from Hogwarts, and even as she grew old and died. She had watched from up above as no one had come to her funeral except for Susan Bones and her daughter. Because what was the point of remembering an invisible person?

But that's okay. She was always good at being invisible.

She smiled bitterly.

It was one of the perks of being Sally-Anne Perks.

A/N Ok, I admit I changed some things from the original one in fanfiction.net, but oh well. And to those who aren't aware of Sally-Anne Perks, I'm not surprised. She is a real character, but only a side character seeing as she was only mentioned like once or twice. Sally-Anne was right before Harry, but it never mentioned which house she was in, so I put her in Hufflepuff. And for the OWLs bit, in the fifth book, she should have been called before Harry, but she never was called, so I added my own twist to it. Anyways, read and review, and if you could- leave suggestions for some other side characters you want to include.
