Ruth read her the story of”Rumple Silt Skin” before putting her to bed.

Mollie threw her arms around Ruth and whispered in her ear- I LOVE YOU RUTH.”

Ruth whispered back – I LOVE YOU TOO.” Ruth closed the door then went back into the living room to tidy up then she took the paper to show Greg.

Greg couldn’t believe what he was reading; she a lot smarter than I thought.

“She is able to pick things up very quickly. I don’t think the special school is for Mollie Greg; I think she should be in main stream school she is bored and thrives on knowledge.”

I don’t know Ruth I do not want her to be ridiculed by the other children; you know vindictive can be.”

“We must give her a chance Greg.”

I agree, I will ring the special school tomorrow and tell them we are taking her out. Then we will take her to infant school.

“Would you like a drink Ruth?

“Yes but not wine.”

“What would you like?

“I would love a martini.”

“Alright; a martini it is.”

Greg mixed the drinks and added crushed ice and a green olive.

They sat in the conservatory on the cane sofa together looking out at the garden.

Greg explained about the elderly woman who he had taken to hospital after being asked to perform a menstrual extraction.

“Have you done them in the past?

“Yes; would you have in my position? When a woman is desperate for help because her parents would disown her and throw her on the street or a woman who has got pregnant to another man and is afraid her husband will find out. Then there is the teenage girl who has got herself into trouble. Now you tell me Ruth what would you do?

“I guess I would try to help.

Abortion and I hate the word, is illegal in England.

“I aim to change that because I’m meeting Alan Blithe tomorrow night at seven o’clock. I will go straight from work Ruth; you don’t mind do you darling?

“Of course not, do have any idea how long you will be?

“I shouldn’t be too long MPs don’t give you much of their time.”

I am taking Mollie to play group after school so I wont be in until after six but I will cook you my special carbonara that I know you like it’s quick and Mollie will eat it too.

Ruth you are an angel sent to me from heaven, he leaned across and kissed her.

“You know what I think?

“What?

“I think you should make some more martini’s; then we can take them into your bedroom.’
