In the spring of 1953 Mavis was helping to pack several boxes of books for a school in New Jersey when she was approached by a handsome looking gentleman.

“Excuse me Miss, could you tell me where I can find Miss Mavis Bell.

“I am she how can I help you sir?

I am Jonathan Edward Carrington the third. Lawyer at Carrington’s, my father has asked me to come and see you to sign some legal documents. Are you free this lunch time?

“Yes;

“Good then I shall see you in “Rochester’s at say twelve thirty.

“Do you know it?

“Oh yes, I know it very well; I go there on occasion with my parents.

“Then I shall see you there presently Miss Bell.

Jonathan Carrington was tall and very athletic looking his black natural wavy hair and piercing blue eyes made him very attractive to women.

He had played base ball at Harvard University and could have joined the New York Yankee’s but chose to join his father in the family business at law.

Mavis went back to her apartment and changed into a sky blue dress which had padded shoulders and a white trim at the top.

She fixed her hair and redid her make up before heading out to the restaurant in her car.

She gave the keys to the bell boy who parked the car for her as she went inside Rochester’s.

Jonathan Carrington rose from his seat upon seeing Mavis; he pulled out a seat for her then sat down.

“Do you partake in a glass of wine Miss Bell?

“Please call me Mavis; I do hate all these pleasantries.”

“Very well Mavis would you like a glass of the finest wine in all of America?

“It comes from the hills of Bordeaux in France. Have you ever been Miss; sorry he corrected himself; have you been to France Mavis?

“No I haven’t; I can to New York from England in 1949.”

 “Did you come alone?

“Yes I sailed here on board a ship called the Moonbeam.”

“Very brave if I may say so

Mavis and Jonathan chatted away over lunch; Jonathan was warming to Mavis as she told him where she had come from and how she came to be the owner of “Cover to Cover.”

“Would you do me the honour of having dinner with me tonight Mavis I have enjoyed your company so much.

“I would be delighted Jonathan.”

I will pick you up around eight.

“Fine,

“Now if you could just sign these papers then we can go.”
