Bill walked silently to his dressing room as the crowd went wild.

“Cut the glove off Norman; I’ve got to get to a hospital to get this hand set as quick as possible. They may call the title fight within a month and this is going to take more than that to heal. Norman ordered a taxi after Bill had got dressed they went to the local infirmary in North Shields. Within an hour he had his hand x rayed which confirmed what he already knew. Three of his fingers were broken. His hand was put into a thick plaster cast and he was sent home.

There would be no celebratory drink tonight. Bill said that he would see Norman for his money later in the week. He had enough put by now to get out of the country once he had fought for the light heavyweight title. He planned to go to France where he could continue his boxing career and get a European title shot or even a crack at Joey Maxim who was the world champion.

Bill kept seeing the wavy haired man in the audience who intended to shoot him as he lay on his bed. Eventually sleep got the better of him and he dropped off.

Tug knocked on his door in the morning to find Bill in plaster when he opened the door. Wow! That was some fight last night according to my dad. Sorry mate I had to work a half shift.

It’s alright; look come in for a minute until I get ready; I’m going to have to tell the boss I cannot work with this.

Tug helped bill fasten his boots then held his jacket so he could push his plaster through the arm hole.

Thanks said Bill as he closed the door.

Once at work he was surrounded by well wishers and even his boss who had been at the fight shook his hand.

“Look Bill said Jackie Adder take a couple of weeks off; we will pay you mate, don’t worry. Just make sure when you fight for that title you bring it home to North Shields eh lads.

A massive roar went up as Bill waved to them all.

Tug said that he would see him later in “The Crane”

Bill headed to the taxi rank to go to Norman’s house to collect his purse from the fight.

One hundred guineas were his after tax and expenses.

Norman asked how he was when he answered the door.

“I’ve felt better; but now I’ve got my title shot I don’t care.”

Norman Paid him his purse money and told him to go easy on the drink because he might get the call to fight sooner than a month.

Norman rang the board whilst Bill was there and told them of the result.

There was silence then a voice came back and told him that the fight for the British Title would be in two months time because the champion had injured his shoulder in training. Norman never told the board about his fighter’s hand injury. He thanked the board then put down the phone.
