The starters were brought out and Ruth asked if there was a salad dressing.

“I’m sorry said Debbie; this isn’t the Ritz it’s the “Quarry Tavern Miss.”

“We have mayonnaise or salad cream.”

“Thank you but no; I will do without.”

“Greg put pepper into his bowl of spring vegetable soup then broke the wholemeal bun that came with it; he spread some butter on it for Mollie to eat.

Mollie broke the bun into little pieces then put them into her soup. Greg put a napkin around her so that she wouldn’t spill the soup onto her dress.

Debbie came back over and asked if they were enjoying their meal the reply that came back from Ruth had her seething when she told her that her chef would never win a Michelin Star for his food.

Greg said the soup was fine as Debbie cleared the table in readiness for their next meal.

When it came; again Ruth was disappointed as the fish was over cooked and the potatoes hard.

Ruth pushed the plate to one side as she had done with the salad.

I’m sorry Greg but I cannot eat this; I’ve eaten some bad meals before and I do not want to sound ungrateful but this food is only fit for the bin.

Greg wrestled with his steak that was tough as old boots and full of gristle.

Eventually he had to concede.

Mollie ate the chips and only a little of the burger that was cold.

“Will you be having desert?

I think not said Ruth as she put on her coat and took Mollie by the hand whilst Greg paid the bill.

Once outside Greg apologised to Ruth; ‘the meals are usually good in there Ruth honestly.”

“She fancies the pants off you; she saw me as a threat.

“She is not my type said Greg as he put the key into the lock and opened the door.

“Well she will not take no for an answer that one.

“I assure you Ruth I have not encouraged her in any way.”

“Look Greg what you do in your own time has got nothing to do with me. If you want her go ahead.”

“I do not wish to sleep with a pub owner thank you very much.

Mollie was yawning as Ruth took her to the toilet before putting on her pyjamas.

She read one of the stories from the books she had bought and Mollie was asleep in no time.

Fancy a nightcap Ruth?

“No thanks I’m taking Mollie to play group tomorrow so I will bid you good night and thanks for the kind thought. It’s a pity the meal didn’t live up to expectations.

I promise the next time we eat out it will be worthy of your praise.

“Oh, so there will be a next time.”

“Good night Ruth.
