Leave him alone Ged said Catherine who tried to get out of the bed with the candlewick bed spread wrapped around herself to stop her husband but within two steps he was on Alec and punched him above the right eye. Alec fell back against the bed. Blood started to seep from a cut on his eyebrow.

“You get the hell out of my house; now!

Alec grabbed his shirt socks and boots and ran down the stairs and out the front door onto the street. The neighbours hearing all the commotion opened their windows and looked out onto the street.

Catherine picked up her camisole and her dress then went into the bathroom; Ged went down the stairs turned right at the bottom and along the passage and into the scullery.

He sat in one of the chairs next to black Formica table with fruit transfers on it. A black food cabinet stood against the far wall; but the doors were white and again these had fruit transfers on them as well; this design was very popular in the sixties. There was also a white enamelled sink and a Murphy Richards gas cooker.

Black and white lino covered the floor. There was a white painted wooden door and behind it was the pantry where they kept their food stuff.

Catherine came down stairs then stood next to the doorway; she couldn’t look Ged in the eye.

“How could you Catherine, in our bed where we sleep and with my best friend?

Catherine didn’t know what to say she just stood leaning against the doorway looking down at the floor.

How long as this been going on?

“Just a few months Ged,”

“Just a few months, in my house and in my bed you bloody slut, Ged shouted.”

“Well come on then tell me what has he got that I haven’t?

“Ged you’d changed you were going out all the time and leaving me on my own; Coming in half cut then slobbering all over me.

Then there was the issue of why I couldn’t get pregnant; well I never wanted children Ged and why I never got pregnant was because I had a coil fitted.

My you’re a heartless cow, do you know that?

“Well you can pack your bags and get the hell out of my house.”

Where am I going to go?” Go back to your mothers in Newcastle and if she asks tell her you’ve been sleeping around; don’t sully my name.”

I’m going to the “Shaft” when I get back I want you gone; lock the door and push the keys through the letter box.

“Don’t ever darken my door again.”
