The doorbell rang at just after seven thirty Carl was in the kitchen preparing a Pork Rilletes. He rushed to the door in his apron and opened it.

“Come in Doreen.

Doreen kissed him as he took her coat and hung it up in the closet.

“Just make your self at home Doreen.”

“I’m impressed she said as she looked around the large terraced house.

“Would you like a glass of wine?

“Well considering it is a French themed evening I would thank you.

“I have a nice red Chateau Ripeau 1954 or a sweeter Sauternes white 1956

I will try the red thanks.

“Please sit, I can chat whilst I work.

Carl brought her the wine and a plate of hors d’oeuvres.

This looks nice what is it?

“It’s Pate Maison made from chicken livers.”

“She tried one.

“Wow! You are good aren’t you; these are delicious.”

Carl placed the pork into the oven then set a timer on the bench.

He brought his drink in and sat with Doreen for a few moments before asking her to sit at the dining table in another room.

“Please bring your wine with you.”

The table was made of smoked glass and chrome it had a lovely vase of flowers in the centre. Carl had thought of everything, serviettes, place mats, and several knives and forks and spoons. Carl refilled her wine glass then served grilled seafood Nicoise Salad.

“Mmm this is nice ten out of ten for presentation.”

There was some soft music playing in the background as Carl and Doreen chatted whilst they ate their meal.

“I bet you’ve been slaving at the oven all day?

“I could lie and say that I have to try and impress you but really it took less than an hour.”

“You are kidding me right?

“I kid you not.”

Carl cleared the plates as the alarm went to tell him that the pork was cooked.

He served it with new potatoes Julienne Carrots and French Beans.

Carl opened the Sauternes and poured the golden coloured wine into fresh glasses.

“This is the wine for this dish he said.”

“Carl that girl in California missed out I can tell you, she cut into the pork cutlet which was so tender.

This wine is lovely too; you will be carrying me home tonight.

When the main course was finished he brought out some French apple tart with quenelles of mint ice cream.

“How am I to compete with that?

 “You don’t.”
