50. Kilo Chapter 50

“All rise shouted the usher as Judge Colin Sarin sat in the chair.
Both Sir Jeffery Rochdale and Edward sat impassively in the seats provided as the first witness was called.
The court calls Miss Susan Doherty.
Susan wearing a blue two piece suit and a simple hat stood in the dock as Alan Bertram began his questioning.
“Please state your name for the court.
“Susan Doherty; sir.”
“Were you employed by Sir Jeffery Rochdale until recently?
“That is correct.
A simple yes or no will suffice Miss Doherty.
“Yes.
Can you tell us in your own words what you witnessed on the eighth of July 1950?
“I was in the hay loft in the stables at Hartford Manor with my boyfriend Ray Butters.
“Could you tell me what you were doing up in the hay loft?
“Yes, we were making love.
The spectators all laughed out loud. Judge Sarin banged his gavel down hard; Silence in court.
“Please continue Miss Doherty said the judge.”
“Well I was putting my clothes back on when in walked Edward Rochdale.”
“How did you know it was Edward Rochdale?
“I know him and his father.”
“Objection.”
“Sustained.
“Please refrain from mentioning other people Miss Doherty.”
“I knew Edward because it was him who employed me.”
Edward walked around the stables lighting all the lamps and looking inside each one.
“So it was very bright in there?
“Yes.
“Then what happened?
“Shortly after Miss Martha Stephenson came in.
“Did you recognise her straight away?
 “Yes.
“She looked around the stable calling out for Robert Mason the blacksmith

“Why would she call out for Robert Mason?
“Martha was in love with Robert and they planned to Marry.”
“Objection superstition.
“Over ruled.
“Martha told me that she had been summoned to meet Robert by the Butler.
Robert in point of fact had been sent to Benton to shoe a friend’s horse.
