Prologue:

It was heavy, I thought, heavier than it should have been, it was only a key after all, but as I looked down , I realised that the estate agent had just dropped ,what looked to be, an intricately decorated Victorian-style key, into my hand.
“that keys a bit strange, isn’t it ? for such a modern cottage? I enquired. I had seen inside the cottage three days previously and had thought that u would be the perfect home for me, since I had had to move out of the flat Tasha and I had shared because it had reminded me of her too much.
“Yes, the estate agent agreed, whenever they try to make a copy of the key with a more fitting design, it disappears, and one like that re-appears in its place. I don’t know what you’ll do with all five of them, anyway , I’ll leave you to settle in.” and he passed me a heavy plush bag, obviously containing the other four identical keys. I decided to use the first key I had got so I unlocked the door and went in

When they got home Robert fished inside his pocket for a key and found it, pushed it into the lock and turned.

He invited Tara inside and offered her a seat on the sofa. When he flicked the kettle on, it boiled for a few seconds and then turned off. Robert put his hand against it. It had boiled. It couldn’t have boiled in such a short space of time. Someone must have put it on not too long ago.

He decided to forget about it, made Tara the coffee she had requested and then sat down himself. He prepared the food and made small talk until the early evening. The carbonara was almost ready to be eaten when dramatic classical music started playing faintly and Cara started whining anxiously.  The music seemed to be coming from the attic, but when Robert got up there, he did not know what was causing it. It just seemed to be coming from mid-air. He went back down stairs and Tara seemed to think he had put it on so he went along with it and made no mention of it. They ate their delicious meal and then had some chocolate mousse. After chatting for a while Tara said that she should probably be going and Robert agreed.

He then said he’d walk her back to her house and when they were almost there she realised she’d left her phone behind so they walked back to his house and while they were there Tara went off to use the toilet and left Cara in the sitting room with Robert. She started whining so Robert stroked the dog’s back  to comfort her, she had her hackles up… he wondered what could be causing such discomfort .That was when the door opened and she started growling intently at the door. Then the apparition Cara was looking at put the kettle on and seemed to move over to the chair. The chair sagged as if someone was sitting in it and then bounced back up as if they had just stood up again. Cara’s eyes seemed to follow something over to the fireplace and then firelighters, matches and coal floated around and lit themselves.  Suddenly he heard the rattle of the cutlery drawer, a knife appeared floating in mid air, pointing downwards as if ready to strike. It sliced through the air, through the open doorway as if on a mission. The door slammed shut. Robert, stunned, got out of his chair and cautiously poked his head round the side of the door just in time to see the knife plunge itself into Tara’s chest and he heard a high-pitched scream as she fell to the floor and the deafening silence that followed. Then Tasha appeared with the knife, dripping with blood, in her translucent hands. She turned around.

”What?” stuttered Robert, “You’re meant to be dead?”

“Oh so that’s how you feel then,” said Tasha. “You cause your fiancée’s death, and less than a month later you go and get a new girlfriend,” she said, kicking Tara where she stabbed her. “Was it all a lie, then, that you loved me?” challenged Tasha.

“No, I really did!” pled Robert.

“It’s YOU!” exclaimed Tara.

“What?” questioned Robert.  “You two know each other?”

“We met before, in a former life, literally!” uttered Tasha smiling a warped, evil, nasty smile

“She was fourteen, she escaped, didn’t she say that she used to live here with her mum and dad. I can tell you this because the dead can’t speak!” Translucent Tasha said giggling evilly.

“Well, I’m an exception!” she added with a smirk.

Robert’s mind refused to believe what was happening; it was obvious, this was not the Tasha he had known and loved, this was not his Tasha, but his heart knew otherwise…he had been dating a murderer and this was her ghost, set out to ruthlessly deflate all his future relationships, he knew in his soul that she blamed him for her death. You see, they were arguing over the phone when she crashed her car into the motorway barrier, her face so tear-stricken she had not been able to see where she had been going. Robert had played it out in his head a million times and he fully blamed himself for her death, wishing they had not argued over such silly things, especially the one that led to her Accident.

When he had heard the crash over the phone he had wished he could have turned back time and not have started the argument. He had re-lived those seconds that it had taken for him to realise what had happened many times and from multiple points of view in nightmares. One night he would be himself realising that life was running away from Tasha fast, the next night he would see the Accident from Tasha’s point of view, tears streaming down her face as Robert’s words stabbed into her heart and cut her in half. Other nights Robert would re-visit it from the driver next to Tasha’s car.

Drifting back to reality Robert’s eyes widened as Translucent Tasha went to dig the kitchen knife into Robert’s chest.

He tried to protect himself with the first words that sprung to mind,

“Please, Tash? I didn’t mean for you to crash, it’s been so hard for me to come to terms with this, Please just go.” He begged.

“Don’t forget me. “Tasha smiled, this time it was a sweet smile. Gradually she faded from the feet up. There was a metallic crash as the knife she had been holding dropped to the floor.

Tara looked up, “What happened? I think I fell asleep.”

Robert looked at her, she had no wound in her chest. He saw Cara and quickly said “Yes, you fainted after tripping over Cara and hitting your head.” He quickly pushed the knife, completely clean and blood free through the kitchen door.  He helped Tara up and walked to her house with her. She looked a bit shaken, but there again, so was he.
