Every Other Weekend (Payzer/Sophiam)

Ali and Rachel Payne are devastated when their parents, Liam and Danielle split, and are suspicious about their dad's new girlfriend, Sophia.

14. Partners

It's finally safe for us to go into our house again, but I really want to stay with our mom.

Once we get off school, Rachel and I have to pack all the stuff we brought here. I have volleyball practice, so I'll be home later.

We won't see our mom until after our birthday, which is sad. At the same time, I wonder what it would be like if I lived with her, and barely saw my dad.

In a way, I wish we lived with her. Even though Sophia and I are really starting to get along, if we lived with my mom, we'd barely have to see her shameless PDA with my dad.

My mom and I could spend more time together. It'd be great.

"Rachel, hurry up!" I knock on her door until she finally opens it.

"What do you not understand about 'I'll be ready in a minute'?" She brushes her hair furiously.

"What don't you understand about 'We're going to be late if you don't hurry up'?"

She rolls her eyes, and throws her hair into a ponytail.

Grabbing her backpack off the bed, she stands up.

"Okay, mother, I'm ready to go!" Her voice is sarcastic and high pitched.

I lazily tap my pencil against my notebook, listening as my teacher drones on and on about properly citing your sources.

All I can think about is volleyball practice after school. I love playing. It's something I've been doing since I was little, and I'd like to think I'm pretty good at it.

Not to sound cliche, but I like to play when I'm stressed. It makes me happy, and it's easy to take your anger out on a ball.

"So, you will all have to find a partner for this assignment," my teacher finally concludes her rant about copyright. "You both will need to make a slideshow presentation together, and once you are all sitting in pairs, I will come around and hand you an index card. Written on it will be your topic that you two need to do research for."

I look around the room for someone who would make a nice partner, and who most likely wouldn't make me do all of the work. My eyes land on James, and I tilt my head, debating to ask him if he wants to work together.

"Ali," I don't realize I'm staring until I feel someone tap my shoulder, and realize James isn't in his seat anymore.

"Yeah?" I turn around to see James.

"Wanna work together?"

"Sure," I attempt to casually shrug it off.

Mrs. Gruss hands me a note card, and I turn it over.

'Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18?'

I show James, before the ring of the intercom emits from the speaker on the wall.

"Attention volleyball students," I look up at the word 'volleyball'. "Today's practice has been cancelled."

I sigh loudly, rolling my eyes. Why did they cancel it? I was so excited to play today.

"Well, since you don't have practice today, would you maybe want to come over to study?" James smiles.

It's so hard to compose myself and act normal.

"Sure," I shrug.

The bell rings for our next class.

"Great, meet me at my locker after school."
