15. Prototype Ch. 15 - Head Above Water

Strange…
All these days seem strange… classes are practically the same if not easier.
Not too long ago I was given a new class… I can still remember my first day there too.
So from now on, I had an extra class after music, which would now be ‘Self defense.’
Which the teacher was also strange…
I knew then that Thanksgiving was coming up, three weeks away.
I had to drag myself out of bed to get through all of my classes, self defense then being the newest.
The teacher once again was strange… I don’t think I could stress that enough.
He called himself Mr. Blue, and Violet and I were the only ones in his class.
“So do you two ladies know why you’re here?”
I stared at him; he looked like a hairy mess.
“For self defense” Violet answered unsure.
“Yes!” he shouted pointing to her “Exactly, I’ve got the feeling that you and me are going to get along just fine.”
I couldn’t help but frown, she only got it right because she guessed.
I only didn’t answer because I was too busy wondering if the hair on his chest belonged to him or a small animal.
“Do you know why you two specifically are here?”
“Self defense” Violet said again unsure.
“This girl is brilliant!” Mr. Blue said fiercely.
I shook my head “It is because we have trouble defending ourselves, that’s all.”
He looked at me confused.
This guy was all physical and no mental.
“That sounds odd” he stated.
“It’s true though.”
“Well, then yes” he coughed “You need to protect yourself, so let’s get cracking.”
That was then, and I can still feel my muscles hating me from then.
The current day was November 23rd and tomorrow was Thanksgiving.
I sat in my room now holding my stomach, it hurt from class but and I could hardly walk.
“Jade” I heard my name.
I could only groan.
“See this is why you should have done sports” Violet pointed out.
I glared at her “Pardon me for not having the proper hand eye coordination” I hissed.
She laughed, first it was happy then it became sad fast.
“What’s wrong?” I forced myself up.
“Tomorrow is Thanksgiving” she said.
“I know” I said “What about it?”
“It’s the first one without mom” she sighed.
I completely forgot about that.
“What are you thankful for?” she asked me.
“To be alive I guess” I shrugged.
She glared at me “I mean it, isn’t there anything?”
I shook my head “I just want these four years to go by quickly.”
She smiled weakly “Well aren’t you curious what I’m thankful for?”
I shrugged “What are you thankful for?”
She looked sad now “I’m thankful that I have my sister here with me.”
She ran out.
I glared at the wall next to me; of course she had to run out like that. We haven’t fought for a while it had to be the day before the only family holiday.
We couldn’t fight on Halloween because I was in the infirmary for a while.
I already knew what I had to do.
I had to find her, tell her I was wrong, and lie to her and tell her what I’m really thankful for… even though right now I am thankful for absolutely nothing.

~ <> ~

I stood in front of the music class; I could hear the instruments playing and the chorus booming. Yet inside I felt nothing.
The last bell rang, but I didn’t move. I knew I was supposed to be looking for Violet, yet inside I knew I couldn’t move.
My gaze going to the group of boys laughing, god how much I missed being important somewhere. Now I just felt so blank.
“Think we should?”
“Hell yeah I have to blow off some steam.”
I watched the boys look around before walking away.
I felt compelled to follow them. So I did.
They walked towards the main dorms, but instead of walking into the building they walked around and opened up a large trap door to go under it.
My mind making me wonder what went on down there, but there was no way I could.
But I had to know, I knew I had to… I had to.
I looked around before I ran over to the door and pulled it open.
There was only a dim light and I could hear men cheering.
But why were the cheering in the first place?
I stepped down the stairs and I saw a crowd around two men fighting, blood was all over the floor.
“Get him!”
“YEAH!”
They were screaming and rooting for both of the boys in the center.
The only ones I couldn’t see.
Then they all went silent before a roar interrupted my thoughts.
“Lucian! Lucian!”
My heart practically stopped.
Lucian threw his arms up in victory as he pushed his way through the crowd to a pile of clothes on the ground.
Then two more boys stepped into the center as the crowd closed them in.
What the hell was I watching? Some sort of Fight Club?
Lucian rubbed at his face, he was covered in blood. He was bleeding.
I was about to open my mouth but I heard a low growl.
“There is a girl in here” one stated.
All eyes falling on me, including Lucian’s for the first time in weeks.
His head was cut, and his lip was too.
“Who brought her?” Lucian shouted “Girls aren’t allowed.”
I stared “I brought myself.”
He glared “Then you can escort yourself out.”
“I will do no such thing” I hissed “I need to talk to you.”
The other guys looked over at Lucian. Lucian making it obvious that I was a waste of his ‘precious’ time.
“So?” I asked “Are we going to talk?”
He shook his head “I don’t have to say anything to you.”
He slipped his shirt on over his head, slipped his shoes on and held his belt as he walked out.
“So what was that?” I asked catching up to him.
He didn’t answer.
“Lucian?”
Still nothing.
“Fine then, I’ll go see if a Vampire is interested in a pet, I have nothing else to live for anyway.”
He grabbed me roughly by my arm “You really are irritating.”
“Why have you been ignoring me?”
He glared at me as he pulled me into the main building; he was taking me to his room.
My cheeks went hot as I remembered the last time I was there.
“So now that you have my attention” he said as he pulled his bloody shirt back over his head “What do you want?”
“Why have you been ignoring me all this time?”
He shook his head “Because it’s better for the both of us.”
I glared “How is it better?”
He turned around to look at me, blood was all over him.
“You really don’t get it do you?”
I shook my head “I don’t care.”
He dropped his belt to the side and started to undo his pants. I refused to let him win.
“I can help” I stated.
His gaze only got more serious.
“With the blood, I mean” I could feel the heat rising.
“Then help me” he said staring right at me.
His pants remained open but my eyes tried to take all of him in.
I got up and he walked towards the bathroom, his eyes staying on me.
My body just followed.
A mischievous smile formed on his lips.
“What’s so funny?”
His eyes softened “What if I told you I missed you?”
I smiled “Then I would say, I knew you would.”
His smile gone “And here I thought you were going to help me.”
I nodded before remembering the blood “Oh yeah.”
I distinctively went for the medicine cabinet to find anything I could use.
“You know how a normal person would get the blood off?” he asked.
It took me a second to register his words “What are you talking about?” I had a bottle of alcohol in my hand and a wash rag.
“That is unless you want to help me shower?”
Heat rushed through my body.
“It wouldn’t be the first time we saw each other naked” he said in all seriousness.
“That was for art, so that doesn’t count.”
He pulled me to him, staring down at me and I couldn’t help but stare up.
“Or we don’t have to do anything” he murmured.
“Why do you insist on making my heart race, then doing everything in your power to smash it within the same couple of minutes?”
He didn’t say anything, he just continued to stare.
“Lucian” I said firmly.
“Jade” he said to challenge me.
“I’m serious” I huffed.
“So am I” he stated “You never take me seriously, so why should I take you seriously?”
I looked away “Because, my reasons are obviously different than yours are.”
“How?” he demanded.
“Because, I never intend to hurt you.”
His expression changed “And you think I do?”
“Yes.”
His hand came up and he used it to extend my neck.
“You really don’t know anything” he said low.
“You always say that” I said not even bothering to look at him.
“Because it’s true” I could feel his breath on my neck.
I fought the urge to moan, he wanted me too I knew it.
“How did you get this scar, here?” he asked lightly running his thumb over it.
I pushed him away “None of your business” I hissed.
His eyes looked offended now “Who did that to you?”
“It doesn’t matter” I said low avoiding his eyes.
That didn’t stop him from making me look; he shoved me hard against the wall making me look at him.
“Stop” I pleaded.
He rested his head on my shoulder, I remember this scene.
His thumb kept rubbing over the scar “Why won’t you tell me?”
“Because, it’s my past and you don’t need to know about it.”
He picked his head back up, his hand holding my chin “Is that so?”
I just glared him down “Yes, it is.”
Either it was just me, or I saw his eyes glance down at my lips.
“Lucian” I said low “Let me go.”
He shook his head, his tongue running over his bottom lip, removing the layer of blood that was coming out of the small cut.
“Lucian” I pleaded low.
“Jade” he groaned pressing his lips lightly to mine.
They were soft, I was prepared for him to pull away like last time, but instead he opened his mouth kissing me harder.
I couldn’t help it, I let him in.
His hands dropped to my waist and he pulled me closer, locking me between him and the wall.
But like every great moment with him, it always ended abruptly and I was always the one left feeling like I was nothing.
He pulled back for air, gasping as he stared at me.
“Why do you do this to me?” I asked.
“Because I need to” he kissed me again lightly.
My hands pushed at his chest, if he kept this up it would be the end of me.
He pulled back just a little, resting his forehead on mine.
I hated this, I hated it so much.
He cupped my face in his hands “You really have no idea” he murmured.
“Then explain it to me.”
He shook his head “I can’t do that.”
“Then why tell me I’m clueless?” I asked irritated.
“Just so you can be aware.”
His gaze was burning me.
I couldn’t take it anymore; I pulled him to me making him kiss me again.
At first he tried to fight, but he melted into me as I pulled him down to match my height.
“Jade” he said between kisses “Stop.”
I didn’t want to, but I stopped.
“Why?” I asked confused “But you… kissed me first.”
“I know” he shook his head as if he couldn’t keep himself focused.
“Then why?” I asked.
“You should probably go” he said.
“Don’t make me leave” I said “I just want to stay.”
He shook his head “You have to go.”
“I love you!” I blurted “Just let me spend some time with you!”
His eyes turning to something else as he looked at me “You expect me to say that back to you?” he growled “Well tough fucking luck, I wish nothing more than for you to know how much I hate you for being human.”
I stared.
“Now get the fuck out before I have something else come and get you!”
I stared wide eyed at him, how can he treat me tenderly then hurt me so badly?
That was Lucian, that was what he did. That was what I have known him to do.
And like an idiot I told him I loved him. Way to go Jade, that is something you are only supposed to tell a guy that you are dating.
“Now!” he growled.
I shoved passed him and just ran, I ran until I was at my door. I stopped moving completely once I landed on my bed.
What am I thankful for?
Absolutely nothing.

I heard loud humming.
If only I could hide away from everything, then maybe everything would be easier.
Today was Thanksgiving and I could feel it, I knew I was supposed to be happy and cheerful, but after what happened yesterday I just wanted to melt away.
“Jade” I heard a cheerful voice.
I groaned.
“So you are awake, come on we have a fun day planned.”
I watched Ariel pull open a box.
“What’s in there?” Violet asked going through another box.
“I got you two something pretty” she smiled.
“Pretty how?” I asked.
“Just something for tonight” she stated.
“Please don’t tell me that you want us to dress up for something again” I said.
“Maybe I do” she said with a small smile “There’s a ball tonight in the gym, everybody should be coming.”
“What?” Violet asked “Really, a ball?”
Ariel nodded “Since Vampires don’t have the Thanksgiving tradition; they hold a ball every year.”
“That sounds amazing” Violet twirled “In a long dress, dancing with the person you like.”
I eyed her strangely; I however already knew why she said person, instead of boy.
Ariel had no idea, and that was probably a good thing for now.
“So what did you get for us?” Violet asked peeking into the box.
“Dresses, shoes” she smiled “Everything a girl could possibly ask for when she goes to a ball.”
I could see the happiness coming off of Violet, she was practically glowing.
“This box here is for Jade” Ariel set the box at the foot of my bed “And this one is for Violet” she smiled as Brock set Violet’s on her bed.
The boxes definitely weren’t small.
“So how exactly are we supposed to dress for the ball?” I asked.
“A big dress, high heel shoes, hair done” Ariel smiled “The works.”
I frowned, I wasn’t good with big dresses, I had trouble walking in heels, and my hair likes to be down.
They both looked at me “You know you don’t have a choice right?” Violet stated.
“Plus I got you both dates” Ariel smiled.
I didn’t want to go with whoever it was; I would only want to go with Lucian.
“Really?” Violet tried to look excited, but I could see right through her.
“So why exactly don’t the Vampires celebrate Thanksgiving?” I asked forcing myself up.
“Well” she made a face “It’s not really that we don’t, more like we aren’t allowed to.”
“That’s not fair” Violet said harshly.
“Since when has the Vampire punishment been fair?” I asked her.
She looked at me before biting her lip.
“Go on” Ariel smiled “Me and Brock will meet you guys in the gym alright.”
Violet nodded “Bye, thanks.”
Ariel and Brock just left.
“I know I used to be like everyone else” Violet stared at the ground “But I see now that I was wrong.”
I didn’t say anything.
“Jade?”
I looked up at her to meet her gaze.
“How did you know?”
“I didn’t” I stated “I just didn’t fit in where I was.”
She frowned “I’m sorry.”
I shook my head “It’s not your fault, there is just something wrong with my DNA.”
It was her turn to shake her head “You and I have the same DNA, so don’t go blaming that.”
“I don’t want to go” I admitted.
“Well you should go, it will be fun and it will get your mind off Lucian.”
I shook my head “I always think about him, no matter what I’m doing.”
She stared at me “Something happened” she squinted at me “Is that why you went back to sleep?”
“What if something did happen?” I asked awkwardly.
“You have to tell me of course” she smiled pulling at my hands “Is he finally talking to you again?”
I shook my head “He still hates me.”
“Well did he at least talk to you?”
“He did more than talk to me” I said low.
“What do you mean by more?”
“He kissed me” I said.
“Wait hold on” she held her hands up for me to stop “He kissed you, like friendly or what?”
“It was” I remembered how hard he kissed me, as if he was using me as his life line “Rough.”
She shrugged “He looks like he doesn’t know what to do with what he has.”
“Trust me” I said “He knows what to do with all of it.”
She shrugged “So what do you plan to do?”
“Well I have to hate him.”
“But I thought…”
“He did” I interrupted her “But he started to yell at me right after, he said he hated me.”
She stared almost angry.
“I just don’t know what to do Violet.”
“Obviously he likes you to some extent if he is going to kiss you” she stated.
“So then what?” I asked confused.
“Make him jealous, it’s simple.”
“That won’t work; he doesn’t care what I do.”
“Then you can have fun with your date” Violet smiled “From what Ariel told me they are pretty hot.”
I wanted to shake my head and say no, but I had no other choice.
“Alright”
“Let this guy sweep you off your feet.”
“It won’t be that easy” I glared.
“That’s fine, just give the guy one night” she said “Let him dance with you, kiss you, let him treat you like a princess.”
“But I don’t want to be a princess.”
“Then just be someone else for a night.”
I wanted to protest, but it really was a good idea “Fine” I huffed.
“We just have to get you ready.”
“If something bad happens again I swear I will never dress up like this ever again.”
She shrugged “Fair enough, now go shower.”

I stood with a towel wrapped around me as I watched Violet dig through my clothes.
“Don’t you have a strapless bra?”
I shook my head “I never needed one before.”
She groaned “Jade!”
“What?” I whined feeling cold “I’m not girly.”
“You don’t need to be girly to own one!”
“Still” I frowned.
“It’s alright” she sighed getting to her feet “You can borrow one of mine.”
I stood there as she pulled a black strapless bra out and tossed it on my bed.
“Now for the underwear” she mumbled.
“That part I got” I said loudly going for my drawer “No one is going to see that.”
“What about your date?”
“I will so not be giving myself up to the guy” I hissed “If he even so much as touches me weird he’s getting smacked.”
She shrugged “Your box is on your bed.”
I nodded going over to start getting dressed.
I decided to match undergarments; the strapless bra fit me oddly though.
“You know” Violet got up to tug at my top “This is a push up bra.”
She literally grabbed my boobs to make them pop into the cups.
I couldn’t help but gasp; she had never done anything like that to me before.
“Sorry” she mumbled.
“Warn a girl first” I shivered “Your hands are cold.”
She smiled “I thought you were going to say something else.”
“We’re twins” I stated “Besides I know who you like.”
Her smile widened “Thanks Jade.”
“Come on, quit lagging we have to get ready” I said.
“Just wait until you see what she got” Violet smiled “She wasn’t lying when she said she got a big dress.”
I shook my head; it was probably like the dress I wore last time. I pulled open the box to see a black puff with silver diamonds on the creases of the dress. I was afraid to pull the dress out now.
“What are you staring at?” Violet walked over to peek.
“It’s a dress.”
“Yeah” she looked at me funny “I said there was one, now put it on.”
I shook my head “Pull it out for me.”
She smiled “Lazy.”
She pulled the dress out and showed it to me. It was bigger than I thought it would be, it reminded me of a prom dress.
It was black with silver diamonds on it, on the chest of the dress was a design that held the most silver.
“Wow” Violet smiled “Perfect for you.”
It really was.
“There is more in here” Violet stated pulling more things out.
“How about you go get dressed now” I told her.
She smiled wide before going to her box.

~ <> ~

I tugged at the zipper on my back only to feel hands pull the zipper up the rest of the way.
“If you need help all you have to do is ask” Violet stated.
I turned around to see her in a large pink dress. It was definitely her color.
It had lace at the top and the bottom, and it looked almost like she wore a corset on the outside of the dress the way it shaped her body. The dress was a dark pink, more magenta with ruffles going all the way down the dress. She was beautiful like always.
The next thing that caught my attention was her necklace. The color was a light pink that had ribbon attached to several silver chains with light pink pearls. At the end of the ribbon, before the chains there was a large light pink rose. It complemented her dress, and her personality. She wasn’t good at deciding on just one color, so the different pinks were perfect for her.
Her hair was up, and curls flowed down and stopped just before her shoulders. They showed her earrings. They looked like a pinkish silver heart at the top, further down it looked like there were leaves and at the very bottom a large pink water drop.
“So what do you think?” Violet asked twirling.
“You look amazing Violet” I smiled “Pink is your color.”
“And these” she lifted up her dress to show me her shoes.
They matched her dresses color, and they even had a rose that way they went the necklace. The shoes opened up at the toes that way Violet could show off her light pink nail polish.
She matched.
I couldn’t help but smile at her, she really was beautiful.
I just hope for her sake that Juliet notices her, and more can happen.
“How do I look?” I asked her.
She looked me up and down before she shook her head “You are supposed to wear the jewelry, and the make up doesn’t just happen.”
I frowned.
The black dress had a couple ruffles, with the silver diamonds and glitter just under a few of them. The chest had a silver design leading down.
“But the dress looks amazing on you.”
There it was, the compliment I was strangely hoping for.
I smiled as she went to my box and pulled out a small circular necklace.
“That one is mine?”
It wasn’t as amazing as Violet’s.
“You have two” she made me turn around so she could lock the circular one around my neck.
It said ‘Guardian Angel protect me wherever I go and keep me from harm.’
I loved it more and more as I held it at my neck.
Then Violet pulled the second one out and I stared at it.
Was there something Ariel was trying to tell me?
The longer necklace was a heart that had wings; with a smaller heart in the center.
Guardian angel? Did I have one? Or was that just what they thought of themselves as?
Whatever it was I loved the necklace and I would wear it with pride.
Violet held the earrings out to me and I thought I might cry. They were long musical notes.
Violet looked in the box longer.
“Is that all?” I asked her putting the earrings on.
She shook her head “You have the most awesome shoes” she practically squealed “I want a pair.”
She pulled out a pair of black high heels. Not just any black high heels.
The back had a strap, there was a bow at the toes just above the opening, but that wasn’t the best part. The black heels had small spikes up the back of the heel, along the length of the shoe, centered on the bow, and along the front of the lift.
I was surprised to see girly shoes that I would actually fight for.
“Come on” Violet pulled me into the bathroom “Just a few more touch ups before we go.”
I closed my eyes and let her work her magic on me.
