84. Chapter 84 : First GIg

Helen's POV

The day of the gig has arrived. I was nervous, excited but mostly scared. What if I got stage fright? What if I forgot how to play the drums on stage? Is that even possible? Adin told me to get to his house early, then we'd pack our gear into Aero's Volkswagen bus and be on our way.

I grabbed a few hair-ties off my dresser and my flannel before jogging downstairs. Calum took a bite from his apple as I entered the kitchen.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"I need to go to the shop. Adin needs help with the inventory," I lied.

"When are you getting out?"

"Maybe later tonight,: I explained as I put my flannel on.

"Babe, you do know you're wearing my flannel."

I looked down and realized I really was wearing Calum's red flannel. I started taking it off and apologizing but Calum stopped me, "Wear it. It looks better on you than it ever did on me."

"But it's my favorite flannel on you," I stated.

He chuckled, "It's only for today."

I kissed him, "Thanks, amor mio."

"I love it when you speak Spanish," He said.

I winked, "I'll see you later then. Text me if anything comes up."

"I will, take care sweetheart."

"You too. Love you," I called over my shoulder as I opened the door.

"I love you too," He said.

I closed he door behind me and took a deep breath before making my way to my car and unlocking it. I got in and started the engine before backing out of the driveway and speeding towards Adin's house.

We actually had to close the shop early today in order for all of us to be available. Adin also announced about the gig to a few of our customers. He handed out a few flyers as well.

I arrived at Adin's house. Matty was carrying his guitar case and was arranging it in the back of the van.

"Hey Lennie," He said.

"Lennie?" I asked.

"You know Helen kinda does with Lennie," He explained.

"You ready?" I asked.

"Nervous, but ready. You?"

"Same, I'm extremely nervous," I wiped my palms on my pants.

Aero came out of the front door with his guitar. He was singing Girls by The 1975.

"Warming your vocals up?" I asked.

"Sort of," He replied. "What about you? Not gonna war your voice up? You are going to sing, remember?"

"I know, but I think I want you to sing Brutal Love for me," I said.

"No, we all voted for you to sing it, we can't just make last minute changes," Aero stated.

Suddenly the sound of wooden sticks rang through the driveway and I turned my attention to Adin, who had dropped at least five of my drum sticks.

"At least it wasn't my drums," I said.

Adin scratched the back of his head and chuckled nervously.

"You mother fucker," I crossed my arms.

"I'm just kidding, Lennie," Adin said.

"Why is everyone calling me Lennie now?"

"We've got your kit already packed in the van," Adin stated. "Shall we go?" He picked up the last drumstick off the concrete floor and handed them to me. I took them and nodded. I tossed my drumsticks in the back of the van before piling in the backseat. Matty sat next to me.

"Let's get this show on the road," Aero said before turning the engine on and driving onto the street.

Aero parked the van in an alley that had an easy entrance into the pub. My heart was racing wildly. We all got out and began carrying our gear into the place. We were stopped by the security guards who asked why we were inside. Aero explained to them why we were here and he and a few other guards took our gear and told us to wait while they set up our instruments.

We were led to a small room that had a couch, a table, and a TV.

"So what now?" I asked.

"We wait," Matty replied before he plopped down on a couch. I sat down as well and began bouncing my knees up and down.

"Here," Aero said.

I looked up and saw a can of Red Bull hovering over my face. I took it and began taking small sips from it. "So are we going to announce who we are right when we get onstage?"

"We'll get into two songs and then announce who we are," Adin explained.

We all decided on the name Necrotic Midnight. It was either that or Madness of the Practice. They fought a good two days over that. I said with whatever they wanted to go with, I'd go with as well.

I finished the last drop of my drink and crushed the can in my hands before tossing it in the recycling bin. My nerves were through the roof. My hands started shaking violently. I had too much energy.

"Aero, it was a mistake giving me that Red Bull. I'm full of energy," I said.

"That's the whole point," Aero replied as he threw his own can in the bin.

There was a knock on the door and Adin opened it. A security guard stood on the other side of the doorway, "You guys are on."

We all got up. I grabbed my drumsticks. Two other guards handed the guys their guitars. They adjusted their straps and lightly strum the chords as they followed the two guards. I saw a glimpse of the crowd. Not big, but not small.

"A lot of people who come here like to dance, so be sure to play something upbeat," One of the security guards said.

We all nodded.

"Go!"

We ran onto the stage.

Calum's POV

I drove to the record shop to see if Helen would like to go to dinner. When I arrived at the store, the light on the inside were dark. The only lights were the the multi-color window lights. I frowned and read the sign that was taped to the glass door.

They would be closed today all day.

So where is she if she said she was going to come to the shop? I called Luke.

"Have you heard from Helen?" I asked when he answered.

"No, why?" He asked.

"Because she said she'd be at the store but she's not here," I replied.

"Look, just forget about it now. Join us at this cool pub, I heard that a local band would be playing," He explained.

I reluctantly agreed to join them and got back in my car and drove to the pub Luke told me to go. After waiting in the queue for a couple minutes I was in. I searched the different heads until my eyes fell upon a bright red color. I pushed through the people until I met with the guys.

"Calum! Nice of you to join us," Ashton said.

I smiled slightly and sat next to them on a bar stool, "So what's this band called?" I asked.

Luke and Michael exchanged glances, "Necrotic Midnight, I believe," Luke replied.

I turned my head to the black-colored drum kit that sat on the stage. Soon, the crowd started getting agitated that there was no music.

"Wonder if they're good," Ashton said.

Michael shrugged. The people around us broke into a sudden uproar. I turned and saw Adin, Aero and Matty on the stage. I moved to the side to get a better look at the drummer.

"Is that?" Ashton asked.

"No," Luke said.

"Helen," Michael added.

Adin, Matty, and Aero all began the beginning chords of Green Day's 'American Idiot' I watched as Helen amazingly joined with the drums. My jaw flew open.

"I didn't know she was the one that was in the band," Ashton said.

"Neither did I," Luke added. "Did she tell you anything?"

I shook my head as I continued to stare at the band on stage. The crowd was bobbing their heads to the drums. So this is what she was keeping so secret from me. But why? Why didn't she tell me?

Helen's POV

We were doing great so far! I think. The crowd was singing along to a few of our cover songs. They really went hard during Jesus of Suburbia. We played four of our original songs. They seemed to like them.

I was already sweating.

"Alright for this next song we're going to have our drummer actually come out and sing for us, while I go to the drums," Aero announced.

I got up from my stool and walked around them before handing my drumsticks to Aero. He gave me an encouraging smile before I stepped up to the mic.

This is the song that reminds me of Calum and if he were here, I'd dedicate it to him.

Calum's POV

Helen quickly adjusted the mic to her height. Her hair was pulled back in a high ponytail and my flannel she borrowed was tied around her waist. Even though she was sweating, she looked beautiful.

She cleared her throat, "We're going to slow it down just a little bit." She began. "So grab that special person. We all have that boyfriend, girlfriend, wife or husband or even crush, this song goes out to them."

She nodded to Adin and he began to play. The tune sounded something from an oldie romantic song, it was good though.

"Hold me in your arms, love me like your best friends did, promise I won't hurt you kid. Hold me really tight until the stars get big, never let me go."

"All the world is our like they say in Scarface kid, you can push your drugs and I can make it big, sing at CBGB's have a real good gig, hey you never know."

"Cause baby we were born to live fast and die young, born to be bad, have fun. Honey, you and me can be one, just believe come on. If you love me hardcore, then don't walk away, it's a game boy, I don't wanna play. I just wanna be yours, like I always say, never let me go."

"Boy we're in a world war, let's go all the way, put your foot to the floor, really walk away. Tell me that you need me more and more everyday. Never let me go, just stay."

"We gonna go far kid, I can already taste it kid, LA's gonna look real good," A smirk played on her lips. "Drive me in your car until the sky gets big, Never let me go."

"Send me to the stars, tell me when I get there kid. I can be your Nancy, you can be my Sid. Get into some trouble like our parents did, hey they'll never know."

"Cause baby we were born to be bad, move one, built to go fast and stay strong. Honey, you and me and no one just believe, come on. If you love me hardcore, then don't walk away. It's a game boy, I don't wanna play. I just wanna be yours, like I always say, never let me go."

I smiled widely at her as she continued to sing. Her voice radiated beautifully out of the speakers. A few of the people were on the dance floor, swaying to the music. They stared at each other's eyes deeply. I wished I could hold Helen on the floor. Hold her close to me and never let her go.

"Boy we're in a world war, let's go all the way. Put your foot to the floor, really walk away. Tell me that you need me more and more everyday, never let me go, just stay."

She finished the song and everyone clapped.

"Cal you're smiling like an idiot," Luke said.

I turned to him, "What?"

"I said you're smiling like an idiot," He repeated.

"Your sister is a great person," I noted.

"I know that, just be sure to never let her go. You'll regret it," Luke replied.

I'll never let her go.

Helen's POV

We finished the last song which was a cover of Cherry Bomb by the Runaways. I sang and I had an absolute great time! Aero, Matty, and Adin followed behind me as we ran down the hallway.

"That was fucking awesome!" I shouted.

"It was!" Aero yelled.

"I want to do it again!" Matty added.

"Soon, we will," Adin said.

"What now?" I asked. "I still have a lot of energy and the night is young."

"Let's celebrate!" Matty suggested.
