My left eye is bulbous, melting down the grotesque mushroom of my cheek. When I try to smile, it presents itself as a leer, one half of my lips distorted comically downwards in a mocking mess. My skin stretches itself taut around the excess of bone, white and bloodless.

The doctors tell me over and over that correctional surgery cannot be done, the disfigurement is too severe, the bone structure cannot be tampered with, you’ll never be ‘pretty’. Every fresh failure is a new chew at my damaged soul.

The first time I tried make up, I was twelve. Expecting an instant transformation, I was horrified to find a hideous clown mask peering back at me from the mirror.

Sometimes, I look at my teeth. Straight, white soldiers. Perhaps the only thing I quite like about my appearance. Sometimes, I think I could actually look quite pretty if I wasn’t so ugly.
