True Love

So last year I had to write a paper for English about anything I wanted. I made a story about my love for this kid in ROTC. Of course I changed A LOT OF THINGS so my teacher couldn't tell but the sense of it is the same. I don't talk to this guy anymore for he has graduated and I have someone new in my life. But I wanted to make something cute. If you like it and want me to continue it/fix if and make into a better story please let me know. This is my baby and I love it. Its a love story,

1. True Love

I walked into the AFJROTC room around 7 am to set up the bored and anything else Sarge and/or Colonel needed me to do for the day. Sitting on the table in the front was the updated schedule with all the upcoming events for me to write up on the board. As I finish writing the last event down, I placed the marker back and left the sheet on the table and made my way for the hallway/atrium outside the ROTC room. Hitting the door frame to keep up the tradition I ran into my best guy friend in the world, Corbin. Once I realized who it was I was already being squished to death with his hug. I patted his back and he released me.

    “CORBIN!” I yelled happily.

“ALEX!” He shouted back at me as he tried to get inside the classroom.

I moved out of his way and he set his things down on the back counter. Corbin is 16 (he’s a junior), one year older than me (I’m 15 and a sophomore) but that never really mattered in our friendship. He’s biracial like me (black and white) except his skin tone is darker than mine, but still light, like a light brown. He used to have a medium size puffy afro but he had to get it cut for uniform day, so now instead of his fluffy hair, he has what we call a Sarge cut, basically all his hair is gone but he’s not TOTALLY bald, there's still hair it’s just REALLY SHORT. I however have really long hair, its super thick and straight at the top and then wavy/really curly from the middle down. We both have brown hair except his is darker than mine because I also have natural honey blonde highlights with hints of red that you can see in bright light or sunlight. He’s taller than me by like a smidge, I’m 5’9 ¾, he’s 6’0 ft. He has greenish/brownish with a hint of red eyes and I have medium brown eyes. I wear black retro geek/nerd glasses and he wears contacts. We’ve known each other since we were babies, our moms are really good friends and so we spent tons of times together playing in the sandbox becoming really close, he’s basically my older brother. After he set his things down we walked back out into the hallway/atrium hitting the door frame. We spent 5 minutes out in the hallway but decided to go back in the room because nobody good was out there.

“So what’s up my friend?” I said pulling out a chair and sitting down.

“Ahh you know…the usual,” He said shrugging as he pulled the chair next to me out and positioned it towards me. Laying his head on my shoulder he let out a low whine, “I’m tiiiiired,” he said putting emphasis on the ‘I.’

Just then Marissa walked in and hugged me tightly around the neck, nearly suffocating me.

“It’s good to see you to” I say gasping for air and patting her arms.

Being the nice friend she is she let me go and set her stuff down on the table and lightly punched Corbin in the shoulder.

    “Bloomberg,” she said sounding annoyed.

“Smith,” he responded rolling his eyes.

Corbin and Marissa have always had a little love hate relationship between them. They're always fighting over who’s better than who but they love each other like brother and sister.

“Still eating those jelly donuts I see, you’re looking a little pudgy their big guy,” Marissa said pointing to Corbin’s stomach.

“Least I don’t smell like I slept in a garbage can,” he said shrugging his shoulders.

I just sat there and laughed as the two of them went back and forth. As they kept bickering Sarge walked in and called Corbin to his office. We all looked at each other with a worried look on our faces, and after a moment of hesitation Corbin got up and followed Sarge into his office.

Marissa sat down in his seat and watched him walk into the office, “What was that about?” she asked turning back to face me.

“Who knows,” I say shrugging and rubbing my hands back and forth on the top of my thighs.

After a moment of silence I looked up at the time and stood up pushing the chair back in and began to prep for 1st hour. Marissa and I TA for the AS-1 cadets first hour, which is just a way of saying we don’t want to go to our first hour, which for us is study hall. We want to hang out in our favorite class and help the first years (which are freshman usually but can also sophomores, juniors, or seniors who are taking ROTC for the first time). Marissa gave me her “I’m bored” look by slouching really badly and I pointed to the hallway suggesting she go mingle out there. She gave me her “fine, I see when I’m not wanted look,” stood up, and walked fiercely into the hallway.  I giggled as I put papers into the Alpha Squad binder for the First Sarge.

Just then I heard the door to Sarge and Col office open and I turned my head to see Corbin nodding and smiling to Sarge and Col, his dimples being dimply as ever. He turned his head and met my gaze; I smiled and turned away, and continued to put the papers in the binder. The door closed and Corbin walked over to me and hugged me from behind, placing his head on the back of my shoulder. It was nice, every time we hugged I felt a charge of energy go threw out my body, being near him gave me the same feeling. I loved that feeling, I feel so alive, and when I’m with him, everything in the world is ok. I could be having the worst day of my life, and seeing him, even for a few seconds, would make everything ok. Just a high five from him can make me wobbly in the knees sometimes.

“Is everything ok?” I asked trying to keep my voice steady.

“Yea,” he said shrugging, “oh, hey, there’s going to be a meeting today, after school, about Mill Ball, I can give you a ride home.”

“That would be great,” I said stuffing the last of the papers into the orange binder.

I turned around to face him, his hands resting on my shoulders, I leaned back against the counter and stared deep into his hazel eyes, they were so pretty and mesmerizing. Suddenly the bell rang and pulled me out of my day dreaming.

“Ah there's that mean bell again,” Corbin said leaning back to look out the door.

“Yea, it is pretty mean isn’t it,” I said looking down at my feet pushing a piece of my hair behind my ear.

“Hey,” he said putting his bent index finger on my chin and pulling my face up so that I was looking him dead in the eyes again, “don’t be sad today ok? Promise me you’ll smile and won’t stop, otherwise I’m going to be sad.”

    I smiled and nodded.

“Good, now give me my hug before I go otherwise ill have a crappy day,” he said grinning from ear to ear.

I laughed and wrapped my arms around his neck and stood on my tippy toes. He placed his hands on my lower back and squeezed me close.

“I hope you have a wonderful day Lex,” he said whispering in my ear.

I pulled away and looked at him like he was crazy, “Lex?” I said looking surprised, “You haven’t called me that since we were in middle school.”

“I know,” he said shrugging, “you’re not mad are you?” he said giving me a worried look.

“No,” I giggled, “its fine it’s just, I haven’t heard that nickname in forever you caught me off guard.”

    “Good,” he said smiling.

“BLOOMBERG!” Sarge yelled from his office knocking on his window.

“Yes sir,” Corbin said grabbing his things off the counter.

“Stop making kissy faces with Williams and get to class!!” Sarge yelled.

“Yes sir!” Corbin said as he slung his bag over his shoulder and waved to Sarge as he headed out the door.

I sighed and grabbed the orange binder and set it on the 1st Sarges desk. Just then Marissa popped her head through the door.

“I saw that,” she said winking at me.

“What are you talking about?” I asked with a puzzled look on my face as I returned to my spot at the back counter.

She moved out of the doorway and walked over to me. “You know EXACTLY what I’m talking about,” she chuckled looking straight into my eyes.

“That is where you're wrong my friend.” I said turning away quickly so she couldn’t see the worry in my eyes.

If her, or anyone found out, especially Corbin, I would be forever teased about it and lose my best friend. Besides, what would a gerd (geek + nerd) like me have a chance with a guy like Corbin, or any other cute guy in this world, he’s sweet, kind, caring, crazy but can be serious at times. He’s just a funny goofball who’s random but yet deep, loving, strong, and intelligent. All the qualities I want in a guy, but I know he would never think of me the same way I think of him, to him, I’m like his sister.

The final bell rang for class to start and the Commander and 1st Sarge of the Alpha Squad got up and did attendance. Marissa and I stayed in the back and helped out with anything when needed. She didn’t press about what happen with me and Corbin for the rest of the hour but I had a feeling our conversation wasn’t over and we would continue this later, in private. I just hope she doesn’t know that I have a MAJOR crush on Corbin. It started out as just a little school girl crush, but we're so alike and I know him so well and he knows me inside and out, that I just feel like he’s the one, I’ve never felt like this about anyone ever before, and I just know, I love him, more than a brother or a best friend, I really truly…love him.

Finally the bell rings for 1st hour to end and Marissa and I wave bye to Colonel and Sarge, hit the door frame on our way out, and said goodbye to each other out in the hallway/atrium.  I made my way to my second hour, physics. Once I got into the classroom I made my way to the back of the room and sat down in my desk and took out my notebook where I write my poems and continued to write my newest one.

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Sugar is sweet,

And so were you.

But the roses are wilting.

The violets are dead,

The sugar bowl's empty,

And my wrists are stained with the color red.

The bell rang for 2nd hour to begin and the teacher yells at the usual people to be quiet and to sit down. I just keep doodling and don’t bother to pay attention. I don’t like physics that much, or any science class for that matter. I just zone out and go into my own little world most of the times, where there is no science class.

I’m pulled out from my daze by the sound of the bell signaling that second hour has ended and I have 4 minutes to get to 3rd hour, ROTC. I collect my things and head towards the stairs where I’m pushed and shoved by other people coming up and going down. I finally snatched a spot in the going down line and slowly descend the staircase. I made it to class in the nick of time; grabbed the Delta Squads binder and sit down next to the Commander, Marissa. The bell rings for 3rd hour to begin and we both head up to the front to take attendance. Once we finished Marissa gave the command for everyone to be seated and as all the cadets sat, we made our way back to our seats.

“Thank you Cadet Williams and Cadet Smith,” Colonel said nodding towards us, “good morning class.”

“Good morning Colonel,” we all said in unison.

“First things first, all AS-2 cadets that are on the planning committee for Mill Ball, there is a meeting after school in here. I want to get it going by 2:45 and end at 3:15-3:30 so call, text, let your parents know,” Colonel stated, “this is a mandatory meeting and I need everyone who’s involved there.” He continued on with all the events coming up this week and next week and then sent us into the old gym to practice marching.

“LEFT FACE,” Marissa said using her commander’s voice.

All the cadets turned to their left, while Marissa and I turned to our rights so we would be facing the same way as them.

“ABOUT FACE,” she yelled again.

We all put our right foot behind our left and turned together in a swift, sharp, crisp movement.

“FORWARD…” she hesitated for a second to see how many people would lean. “Do NOT anticipate my command, wait for it. I saw about six of you lean, you are not Michael Jackson, therefore you will not lean, FORWARD MARCH.”

On march we all stepped off with our left foot.

“Left, left, left right, right left,” I said on the correct foot at it hit the ground to keep the cadets in step.

We continued marching, columns, change steps, to the rears, and many more for about 30 minutes.

“FLIGHT…HALT, step stop,” Marissa said as she stopped to, “LEFT FACE.”

All the cadets turned to their left to face us and Marissa and I turned to our rights to face them.

“Parade rest,” she commanded and following her orders he did, “ok guys, good job marching today. Where looking really good, and I’m proud of you. We need to work on not anticipating commands and staying in step a little bit but other than that you guys are looking great! I’m proud of you all and I’m going to turn it over to Alex for any comments she has and then she’ll give you your fall out.”

I stepped forward and returned to parade rest, “Thank you Marissa, ok guys, um…basically it’s the same as Marissa, you guys are looking really good, we just need to stay in step and work on not anticipating commands, wait for it. Ok, so in a minute I will give you the command fall out, I want you to fall out and fall back into the classroom,” I went into the position of attention before giving the next commands, “Flight, by my command, ATTENTION.”

Everyone at parade rest including Marissa went to attention.

“FLIGHT, FALL OUT,” I yelled.

“ONE CORE,” everyone yelled in unison, we then executed and about face, “HUH!!” we shouted pelvic thrusting while we said ‘huh’ .

After falling out, we all walked back to the class room and grabbed our things. The bell rang and we all hit the door frame as we left. Marissa and I said bye to each other again and I headed off to 4th hour, math.

The bell rings signaling for the end of 4th hour. I put my math stuff in my locker, grab my 5th hour stuff and head towards that class.

“Alex wait up,” I heard someone yell from behind me.

I turned around and saw Marissa speed walking towards me.

“Hey Rissy,” I said hugging her.

“Hey, were you off to, it’s time for lunch,” she said breathing heavily.

“Dropping off my bag at Mr. K’s room so I don’t have to lug this heavy thing around,” I explained pointing to my backpack.

“Mk, well i'll meet you down there. I have to go find Kayla and give her headphones back,” she said turning and walking the opposite way.

“Ok, I’ll see you,” I said turning and walking to my World History class.

Lunch was fairly simple and normal, Marissa and I sat at the table with everyone from ROTC who had A lunch, Marissa couldn’t find Kayla so I took her headphones and said I’ll give them to her during 6th hour. We all just sat around and ate, talked about random things, and laughed. Marissa didn’t bring up our conversation we had earlier so I think she forgot.

Finally the bell rang and we all got up and dumped our trash. I hugged everyone and made my way to World History. I plugged my iPod in and listened to “Wonderland” by: Natalia Kills as I made my way slowly through the huge crowd. As I was walking someone grabbed my arm from behind and pulled me to the side.

“Hey, what do you think you’re doing?” I said taking my headphones out and trying to break free from the persons grip so I could turn around the chew them out.

“Is that any way to treat your best friend?” the person said with a hint of jokiness in it.

I turned around smiling and hugged Corbin, “You scared me half to death!”

“Sorry,” he said shrugging and chuckling. “I didn’t know how else to get your attention, I know you, when you're listening to music you can’t hear a thing.”

“True…” I said biting my lip, “still, I thought I was going to die!”

“In a school?”

“It could happen.”

He laughed and gave me another hug “Oh Lex, I love your way of thinking.”

“I know, I’m just that cool,” I said hugging him back, “hey I got to go, world history starts in 2, but I’ll see you after school ok.”

“Yes you will,” he said pulling away, “and remember, don’t stop smiling, your smile makes the world go round.”

I blushed and smiled, he always knows what to say. I turned and waved to him and headed to world history.

The rest of the day went by pretty fast. As I dropped my English binder off and grabbed my jacket from my locker I saw my friends Jc, Liam, and Jake.

“Hey guys, wait up!” I yelled shutting my locker and running over to them.

“Hey Alex,” they all said together.

“Can I walk with you to band?” I asked.

“Sure,” Jc said and Liam and Jake nodded in agreement.

“Thanks,” I said smiling.

We made our way downstairs and passed the ROTC room on our way. As we walked I felt something hit my head. I turned around ready to yell at the person who threw it and saw Corbin standing there.

“You walked right by me and didn’t even give me hug, I had to get your attention some way,” he said holding his hands up.

“A normal person would have shouted my name,” I said crossing my arms and giving him the “really” look.

“I’m not normal though,” he said grinning from ear to ear.

“Alex, are you coming?” Liam asked.

“Yea, go on without me though, I’ll be right there.” I said turning my upper body around to face them.

They shrugged and kept on walking. I turned back to Corbin who was heading towards me. I exhaled slowly and walked towards him to. When we met each other halfway we both opened our arms and hugged each other. After about 5 seconds we both pulled away.

“See, now was that so hard?” I asked.

“Yea, I guess, but it was no fun,” he said whining.

I chuckled and looked down at my feet nodding in agreement.

“I see, well, I have to get to band or Mr. Marlowe will have my head, so I’ll see you in a few.” I said kicking my foot and lifting my head to meet his gaze.

“Bye my little band geek,” he said waving as I turned and headed down the hallway to the band room.

I made it to the band room with time to spare, I read the bored,

“Great, we're going outside,”

I mumbled. I went into the back room, grabbed my clarinet, put it together, and headed outside to the football field to run our drill.

We marched outside for 40 minutes and finally came back in. When I got back into the room I put my clarinet away in recorded time, grabbed my stuff, and waited at the door. I mingled with Jc, Liam, and Jake a little but they mostly kept to themselves. Finally the bell rang and I ran out of their and straight to the ROTC room. As I got closer I slowed my pace so I wouldn’t seem desperate. I got to the room and set my things on the chair. Corbin was in talking to Sarge so I waited patiently and went to look at the signup sheets for service hours. After about 5 minutes they both came out of the room and Sarge called the meeting to order. Everyone on the committee came in and Riley shut the door. I sat down and Corbin sat down next to me. Sarge took roll call, and after we figured out who was missing, who skipped, and who didn’t know, the meeting began. We picked a date, this Saturday, the theme, winter wonderland, and we booked a DJ, a caterer, the price for tickets, and the gym. After everything was done Sarge dismissed us.

“Williams, Bloomberg, stay back for a second,” Sarge said looking down at his papers.

Corbin and I looked at each other and then sat our bags back down on the chairs. We walked up to the front by were Sarge was standing.

“You wanted to see us Sir?” I asked.

“Since we only have 5 days until the dance, I need you two to stay late after school tomorrow and design the tickets. Get some ideas together tonight, pick your best one tomorrow and start printing. We need 150 tickets assuming everyone is bringing a date. Do you think you could do that?” he said looking at us both.

“Yes sir we can,” Corbin and I responded.

“Good, now get out of here,” he ordered.

We turned and grabbed our things, slapped the door frame on our way out, and headed to his car. On the ride home we laughed so much, I think I need stomach surgery. As he pulled up to my house I unbuckled my seatbelt and turned to face him.

“Would you like to come in?” I asked him.

“I would, but I gotta go, my step mom wants me to try this new diet recipe. I’ll see you tomorrow,” He said with a hint of worry in his voice.

“Um…ok then, I’ll see you tomorrow,” I said getting out of his car.

“Bye Alex,” he said before I shut the door.

“Bye,” I said with sort of a smile on my face.

I watched him as he pulled away and got to the corner. That’s weird…, he didn’t turn left and since when is his step mom on a diet? She’s already skinny and perfect, I know she works out but she’s not on a date…I hope everything’s ok, I thought to myself. I shrugged it off and went inside my house.

The next day started out the same as yesterday, and every other day. Marissa and I were leaning against the back counter when Corbin walked in.

“Hey Corbin,” I said standing up straight and turning to face him.

“Hey Lex, Smith,” he said setting his bag down and nodding to Marissa.

“Bloomberg,” she said with her arms crossed.

“Anyways…how was your night last night?” I asked Corbin.

His phone vibrated and he took it out and checked it.

“Corbin…?” I said again.

“Huh…what, oh it was good,” he said looking up for a second and then went back to his phone.

“Oh, well that’s good,” I said trying to make small talk.

“Yea, hey listen I’ll see you later, I got to go meet up with Tyler,” he said still looking at his phone he grabbed his bag and headed for the door.

“Oh, um ok. I’ll see you later then, hey don’t forget we have to stay late after school,” I said shouting a little bit so he would hear me.

“Yea I know,” he said shouting back. He hit the door frame and left.

I turned back to Marissa, “Did he seem…of to you today?”

“He’s always off to me,” Marissa said shrugging and turning to another girl to tell her something.

I sighed and after a moment or two I decided to go look for him. I hit the door frame and walked out into the atrium. I looked over to the rotunda and I didn’t see him, so I took a left and headed down the long hall to the new gym, old gym, weight room, and lunch room. When I got to the end I looked to the right and saw him standing there, with…her.

I quickly hid behind the wall so they wouldn’t see me. I can’t believe I just saw him kissing HER, I thought to myself. I started to slide down the wall; I brought my knees up to my chest and laid my chin on my knees. I couldn’t stop them, the tears just came and came and didn’t stop. How could he, how could he be with HER? Out of everyone in this school, he chose HER…Ashley Polanski, the girl who has bullied me since kindergarten. How could he betray me like that!?!? How can he be kissing her period!?!? Maybe he wasn’t…maybe it was just my imagination, I thought to myself. I peeked around the corner and what I hope what was just a hallucination, turned out to be real, horribly real. After about 2 minutes, I was calmed down, I wiped my face dry, fixed my makeup as best as I could, collected myself, stood up, and made my way back to the classroom. I put a nice fat fake smile on my face and told myself everything’s going to be ok.

The rest of the day went by normally. I smiled; I didn’t tell anyone what I saw that morning. After lunch, I avoided him and on my way too band. I didn’t even want to look at him. How was I supposed to spend after school with him making 300 tickets? After the last bell rang, I grabbed my bag and slowly made my way to the room. Once there, I placed my bag down and looked around from him.

“Hey Jordan, have you seen Corbin?” I asked our Chief Master Jordan.

“He’s in the bathroom I think,” Jordan replied.

“Probably making out with Ashley,” I mumbled.

“What?” Jordan asked.

“Nothing, thanks for your help,” I said quickly.

“You’re welcome,” he said as he left the room.

I looked around the room for something to keep myself occupied. I decide to head out in the hallway and find my friend Bree. I hit the door frame on my way out. Everyone was basically gone so it wasn’t hard to spot her with her boyfriend. Must be nice, someone to hug and cuddle with, someone to kiss you, someone to make you feel loved, I thought to myself. Just then Corbin snuck up and hip bumped me.

“You’re a creeper, staring at Bree and her boyfriend,” he said following my gaze.

“I’m not staring, I was looking for her and I found her, there’s a difference you know,” I say crossing my arms and turning around to walk back into the room.

Corbin hesitated for a moment and then followed me in, "Is something wrong?”

“No, I’m fine, just dandy in fact,” I said in a snippy voice.

“Alex, you can tell me if something’s wrong you know that right?” he said leaning in and giving me a “duh” look.

“Can I? Can I really? Because I thought we told each other everything!! Like the fact that your dating Ashley Polanski!?” I said in a mean sarcastic voice as I uncrossed my arms and leaned forward.

He just stood there and looked at me with a blank expression, as if someone just stole his whole vocabulary right out of his mouth like Aladdin stole food from a shop in Aladdin.

“What, Ashley got your tongue?” I said with a little bit of venom.

“Who told you?” he whispered and slowly made his way towards me with his hands up like a cop who pulled a gun on someone.

“You honestly think I’m stupid? This morning you came in here and you were different and…oh my god. That’s where you went last night. You went on a date with her. That’s why you didn’t come in and instead lied to me saying your mom wants you home to try a new diet recipe. Your step mom’s skinny enough, she wouldn’t be on a diet. Plus, you didn’t turn, you went straight. Oh my god, I cannot believe you,” I said in amazement.

“Alex let me explain,” he held on his hand to touch mine.

I pulled my hand away and crossed my arms, “Don’t touch me.”

“Alex,” he moved closer.

“I SAID DON’T TOUCH ME!” I yelled and backed away.

I looked at his face, he looked hurt, for the simple reason that I have only talked like that to my mom and my aunt when they were drunk and going to hit me, he knows that’s what I say when I get really scared. You could see the hurt on his face, the pain knowing he caused me to feel the same pain and hurt my mom and aunt cause me.

“Alex I’m…” he started but I cut him off.

“Just save it. You were my best friend my whole life, you know what she did to me, you know how she hates me, and yet you're dating her? Ditching your best friend for her? Why? Do you hate me that much?” my voice started to shake and crack.

“Alex let me ex-“he started to say but I cut him off again.

“Tell me one thing Corbin, why didn’t you just come out and tell me, instead of sneaking around behind my back,” I said trying to choke back the tears.

“Don’t you dare yell at me, and I would, only because I’d be looking out for you. She’s not your type, don’t you see, she’s probably using you to get at me. She always takes everything good in my life, whatever Ashley wants, Ashley gets,” I said shaking my head, “but you’re just too blind to see the truth.”

“I guess I was, and now I can clearer than ever before,” his expression turned from pain to anger and hatred in a matter of seconds, and I know exactly why.

“Me too,” I said letting a single tear go.

He turned and was headed for the door. I hated him so much; I took my boot off and threw it at him. It missed him, landing right in front of him. He picked it up, and set it on the table and continued walking.

“You know what hurt the most,” I started to say, he stopped and turned his head so that I could see the side of his face, “the fact that the person who is basically like my guardian angel, lied to my face and made a fool out of me. What do you think Ashley does in her spare time? Besides eating little babies, she’s laughing at me because I didn’t know that my best friend was dating her. The fact that the person I trusted the most betrayed me in the worst way possible.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t get too attached and learn to let people go, stop living in the past,” his voice was cold when he said that. It cut threw my heart like a sharp dagger. He turned back and left the room. I ran to the door and slammed it. I have never been hurt this bad in my life. I laid against the door and slid down to the floor. I didn’t stop the tears because I knew it would be impossible. I brought my knees up to my chest and buried my head in my knees.

I must have been sitting there on the ground for an hour, when I came to my back, neck, and legs hurt. My face was dry from all the salty tears, I slowly stretched out, the pain was everywhere at once, but were it hurt the most, was my heart. I slowly got up and went to my bag to get the designs out that I worked on last night. I made my way over to the computer and sat down in the chair. I typed out the design, and all the info. I printed it out, took it to the copier room, and copied 300 copies. After I was done, I went back to the room and cut them all out, once I finished, I grabbed my stuff, shut off the lights, and began the 15 minute walk home. As I began to walk, it started to rain.

“Great,” I mumbled, “just what I need.”

By the time I got home, I was cold to the bone. I changed into some warm pajamas and went straight home.

“It’s been 3 days since you guys have talked, you need to go apologize for being so mean and flipping out on him,” Marissa said as she ate her burger.

“Easy for you to say, the love of your life didn’t betray you by dating your arch enemy,” I said laying my head down on the table.

“Still, just go apologize, I can’t take this anymore, you're letting yourself go, your hair though,” she said lifting a piece of it up, “you need to make up and go back to the way you were before.”

“Fine, I’ll talk to him after school,” I said letting out a huge sigh.

“Good,” Marissa said sitting up and eating her sandwich.

I rolled my eyes and stole one of her fries. The bell rang, and I got up and said bye to Marissa. As I left the cafeteria I passed Corbin, he wouldn’t even look at me. I kept walking and as I rounded the corner I saw Ashley…WITH SOMEONE WHO WAS NOT CORBIN! I got closer and closer and I saw that it was Corbin’s step brother, Michael.

“Since when is Michael Corbin?” I said sarcastically crossing my arms.

They imminently stop kissing and turned to face me.

“Well look who it is, little Miss Gerd,” Ashley said with a snippy attitude, she shot me a glare that could cut through cement.

“Look who it not is…Corbin. What are you doing Michael? Corbin’s your brother,” I said turning to face him.

“Step-brother, there’s a difference Alex,” he said rolling his eyes.

“Doesn’t matter, your family, and family doesn’t go around kissing their step-brothers girlfriends, even if they are…” I didn’t dare finish the sentence.

“Even if their what?” Ashley asked.

“Dirty,” I said with hatred.

“Oooh I’m dirty,” Ashley said shaking her hands as if she’s scared, “you’re pathetic.”

“And you’re a cheater,” I said turning around to face her.

“Whatever,” Ashley said as she walked off.

I turned back to Michael, “And you, Corbin is your brother! Step or not, he was there every day in the hospital when you got into that accident, he skipped school, and the ATC’s to be there for you, and THIS is how you repay him?”

“I never asked him to.”

“You didn’t have to; he loved you like you were his flesh and blood. And this is how you go a repay him, you’re pathetic.” I shook my head and walked away.

“Don’t tell him, please.”

I looked back, “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t?”

“Because I’ll tell everyone that over winter break last year you tried to kill yourself because your mothers nothing but a drunk,” Michael took a step closer to me.

I backed away, “You wouldn’t.”

“Maybe not, but what’s to say I won’t?” he took two steps towards me this time.

“What do you want?” I asked backing away even more.

“Be my date to Mill Ball, I’ve always been jealous of Corbin, for his stupidity, the fact that he doesn’t realize that he has the most beautiful girl right in front of him.”

“Do I have a choice?” I already knew the answer.

“Nope.” He said with a devil smile.

I hate my life.

I finished putting my hair up in a low loose but tight bun. My dress was baby blue and white. It was long and strapless and I had on a pair of low white high heels on. I grabbed my purse and camera and walked out the door to being my hell night. Standing at the end of the driveway was Michael Bloomberg, Corbin’s step brother. I walked to the end of the driveway and he took my hand and kissed it. To be honest, he didn’t look half bad; he took out a corsage from his jacket and placed it on my wrist. I tried to smile but it came out fake, and he knew it. He opened the door to his car and I got in. We arrived at the dance in 5 minutes and when I walked in it was beautiful. Blue and white balloons were scattered around the floor, some were on strings, and some were even way above on the ceiling. It was the exact definition of what a Winter Wonder Land would look like. I could feel all eyes on me because of who I was with. I quickly walked over to Marissa who had brought John Gomez as her date.

“Hey…” I said with a tinge of nervousness, I could tell she knew.

“What’s up with your date?” she asked eyeballing him up.

“Long story, have you seen Corbin?” I asked looking around for my best friend. I don’t care what was at stake; I was going to tell him.

“He’s not here yet, his date,” she tried to say without throwing up, “is running a little late.”

“I can’t believe he’s dating her,” I said with a shiver.

I sat down next to Marissa, and Michael went over to the food table to get some appetizers. I looked around and admired all the girls’ dresses, and how the guys who usually look sloppy, cleaned up really well. Just then the gym doors opened and every head in the room turned to look, it was of course none other than Ashley and Corbin. Just the sight of her made me want to puke. She was wearing an all egg white color dress, with light baby blue beading of what looked like snowflakes and icicles. Her arm was wrapped around his as they made their way down the blue carpet. She was enjoying every bit of the attention. Once they got to the end of the carpet they broke off and walked over to their table, which was farther than I had hoped it would be.

I got up and started to make my way over to their table when I felt someone grab my arm and spin me around using as much force as they could muster without making a scene.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Michael said trying to make a big scene.

“I was…going over to…talk to Sergeant about something,” I said hoping he wouldn’t catch my lie.

“Nice try, why don’t we go get some punch?” Michael said taking my arm and dragging me back over to the food table.

“But I have to-“I said looking back to where Corbin and Ashley were talking.

I tried to get away whenever I could be Michael was right their pulling me back. Finally I saw Corbin and Ashley get up to dance, perfect.

“Hey, how about we go dance? This is one of my favorite songs and I can’t help but get funky whenever it comes on…hey,” I tried to make my voice sound light and fun.

“Ok then, let’s go,” he grabbed my wrist and spun me around really fast, dragging me to the dance floor.

BOOM, came from the speakers as the bass was being played in the song. We danced and every time I moved I was one step closer to them and one step from losing Michael. Finally I ended up right next to Corbin with Michael out of site and I did a little bump so that I knocked into him to get his attention.

“Oh, hey I’m sorry I didn’t see you their Corbin,” I said trying to sound polite; hopefully we would forgive me for throwing my shoe at him.

“Yea whatever,” he said turning his attention back to Ashley.

Crap. “This dance looks pretty good don’t you think?” I said trying to make small talk with him.

“Sure,” he said grabbing Ashley’s hand and spinning her.

I tried to get closer but they just scooted away. I stopped dancing and turned to face him.

“Listen Corbin im sorry, I should have never freaked out on you like that but there’s something that you need to know-“ I was instantly cut off by an arm around my neck.

“There you are you little stinker,” Michael said losing his grip, “I thought I lost you there. I’m sorry Corbin, is Alex bothering you? I’ll take her off your hands,” he said sad he grabbed my arm and started pulling me away.

“Let me go,” I tried to fight with him and wiggle my way out, “Corbin, Corbin help, help me please.”

“Shut up,” Michael said as he tightened his grip.

“Ow that hurts! Michael stop, you're hurting me!” I screamed.

“Let her go bro,” I heard his familiar voice, he was mad.

“Why do you care? You guys aren’t friends anymore,” Michael said letting my wrist go. I held it in my other hand; I could already see a bruise forming.

“I may not be talking to her, but she will always be my best friend, and I hope, something more,” Corbin turned back to Ashley, “Ashley, your cool and all but not my type. I’m sorry but, where over.”

Everyone was shell shocked; I dropped my jaw in amazement, had he really just done that?

“Fine, I don’t need you anyways, I have your brother,” she said crossing her arms and stomping.

“Yea, I know you do,” he said turning back to me and Michael, “and I wish you both the best of luck.”

Ashley stomped off and Michael followed her, I looked down at the ground and at my wrist. Suddenly, a pair of hands that I knew so well were holding my arm and examining my wrist.

“Your wrist should be fine, it will bruise over and probably hurt, try not to use it if you don’t have to,” he said.

I looked up at him with tears in my eyes, he was talking to me, not in an angry tone, but in a friendly way, and I missed that so much. He pulled me into a hug and the tears began to spill out of me like water from a glass when you tip it over.

“Come on Lex, I’ll take you home,” he said as we began to talk to my table. Marissa met him halfway with my things and as we headed to the door, Col and Sergeant nodded meaning it was ok for us to leave.

The car ride home was quiet, I tried to calm down, but I knew what was waiting when I got home. He pulled up to my house, and cut the car.

“Come on, I’ll walk you up,” he said grabbing my stuff and getting out of the car.

When we got to my front porch I looked down at my feet and didn’t talk, I couldn’t muster up the courage.

“You know, I never did get to slow dance,” he said with a hint of laughter in his voice.

I looked up at him and smiled, I couldn’t help myself. He placed his arms on my hips, and I placed mine on his shoulders.

“I got you something,” he said reaching into his pocket; he pulled out a silver butterfly clip and placed it in my hair.

“Thank you,” I said, “It’s beautiful.”

“I saw you looking at it a couple months ago when we were at the mall and I went back the next day to buy it for you,” he started to say nodding his head at the clip, “I brought it to school every day waiting for the right time to give it to you, along with something else. But the way I acted this week, I’m surprised you’re even talking to me.”

“Corbin, you’re my best friend no matter what, how could I NOT talk to you,” I said giving him the “duh” look.

“I’m sorry Lex, I should have listened to you,” he said looking down.

“It’s ok,” I said with a smile on my face, he looked up, “I’m the one who should be apologizing, it’s your life and you can date whoever you want.”

“No, I’m the one, I think the reason I did it was because I was made I couldn’t have the real girl of my dreams,” he said shaking his head and looking at me.

“Who?” I asked with a puzzled look on my face.

“You,” he said in a quiet voice. We both stopped dancing. He leaned in and kissed me on the lips, it was the best feeling in the whole wide world, “I love you Alex.”

Hearing him say that felt like I had eaten a billion caterpillars and they had just hatched into beautiful butterflies and where flying around in my tummy when he said those 3 little words. I looked him straight in the eye and said the 3 little words I have wanted to say to him the moment I realized he was the one.

“I love you to Corbin.”
