Mechanical War

A war is coming.
Just not the war everyone expected.
The dictatorship known as the Axis Dynasty is collapsing, torn apart by the two people who once lead it. Avalis and Remus Axis. A civil war is starting over the rights of the Numbers, who were oppressesd by the Dynasty. And on top of that the deadly, Number-killing virus that Avalis released continues to be a threat to the Numbers when Avalis hoards the vaccine and cure.
Indie sees the war as a chance for change and she's willing to do just about anything to obtain it, especially after everything the Dynasty has done to her and those she cares about. But, this change means she has to be willing to trust her uncle Remus and turn her back on her own mother and sister. Everything comes with a price attached.
Sequel to Chemical Numbers

2. Prologue

There is nothing around me. Nothing I want anyways. The illusion of hope has worn out, its luster lost in the blood of war. I don't know what I'm doing anymore, surrounded my miles and miles worth of bodies, but all I can care about is the body laying in my arms. What? How? Why? I can't understand. I don't want to understand.

"Indie, please, stand up," she says but she understands even less than I do.

My fingers wrap tightly around the blue uniform of the fallen angel or risen demon in my arms. "I can't"

"You have to," she says her voice losing its soft edge in the midst of horror, her patience worn thin after days without rest.

"You should just leave me," I tell her. "I'm not going anywhere."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because you don't need me anymore. They don't need me anymore. No one needs me anymore," I say without flinching; though, I can feel my breath lock up my throat, trying to kill me before I can do anymore damage. I look into her eyes and see the recognition there. She knows. I know. I'm entirely worthless.
