~~I stare at myself in the body-length mirror and take a deep breath, attempting to calm my racing heart. Just stay calm, I tell myself . I focus all my attention to my reflection and admire the red dress that stops right above my knee. My short brown ankle high boots make me look a few inches taller and I’m grateful. Being 5”2 around a bunch of people hitting the 5”7 range can be a hassle. My blonde hair is curled into tight ringlets and my make-up done to almost perfection by my friend Sarah. I nervously wipe my hand against my dress and inhale deeply. Maybe I can tell father I don’t want this party but my wolf growls quietly at me at the thought.
Don’t even think about it, she snarls. I sigh and nod, knowing I couldn’t cancel this party even if I wanted. My 18th birthday is in a few days, and 18 is the age when you can finally find your mate, so my dad, the Alpha, is throwing my a birthday party to help me. My heart beat increases at the thought of finding my mate, my other half, the one I’d spend the rest of my life with.
“Addison? Are you ready?” My father asks from my doorway. I pull my gaze from the mirror and look at my dad. His brown eyes meet my dark blue ones and his eyebrow raises as he senses my anxiety.
“Are you alright?” He asks and takes a step in my room. I nod quickly and with one final look in the mirror, I start walking towards my dad. He’s escorting me to the ‘ball room’ which was really the conference room once the tables were cleared out. He offers me an arm and I slip my hand through his elbow. His 6 foot figure towers over mine, even though I’m wearing heeled boots and I inwardly curse my shortness.
“You’re mother and I will be waiting in the study if you need us.” He informs me.
“What? You’re not staying?” I ask, my nerves rising by each step we take towards the party, my party.
“I’m going to make a short speech and be on my way. You’ll be fine. You’ll have Tyler and Sarah stuck to your hip the whole time.” He smirks and I playfully glare. To most people he is strict and demanding but to me, he’s like a big teddy bear. I think it’s because I’m his only daughter. Not that he hasn’t tried to have more kids but mom could never conceive again after my birth. With that, I forced the thought of siblings out of my head and noticed we was standing in front of the large oak doors, the only thing separating me from the party. I can hear the beat of the music and feel the vibrations running up and down my legs.
“Ready?” Dad asks and with a final attempt at calming my racing heart, I nod. He swings open the doors and everyone’s eyes snap to us. The music immediately shuts off and silence fills the room. Arm-in-arm, me and dad make our way to the front of the room. Austin, my dad’s beta, smiles at me and I return it. I notice no one in the room dares make any sound in fear of showing disrespect to their Alpha.
Would you just listen? He’s about to talk. My wolf says, breaking me from my thoughts. On cue, my dad coughs to make sure he has everyone’s attention.
“I’d like to thank you all for coming to my daughters party. As you all know, this is an important event not just one reason. Addison is coming to the mating age and I am helping her to find her mate. So, please feel free to converse with her.” He says and I see people nodding at his request. With one last smile in my direction, he walks out the doors and the music is turned back on, bursting my eardrums. My eyes scan over the tons of faces until they settle on Tyler, who is gulping down the fruit punch. I make my way over to him and he hugs me.
“I will be the first one to ‘converse’ with you.” He chuckles at my dad’s words and a smile spreads across my face, my heart finally starting to calm down. About time, I growl to myself.
“Feel free.” I say and he grins, exposing his white teeth and dimples. Tyler turned 19 last year and I thought we’d be mates but turns out, we wasn’t. It’s not the I like him like that but we’ve always been close so I assumed. But no, we’re just really close friends. He hasn't found his mate yet.
“You look beautiful.” He says and I feel a blush creep up on my cheeks.
“Thank you. You look handsome.” I reply and he offers me a glass of punch, which I gladly accept.
“Have you seen Sarah?” He asks and I shake my head no. He starts surveying the crowd for her and I wait for him to finish. Tyler has always been protective of me and Sarah so when one of us is not within eye sight, he gets worried. I don’t need a constant babysitter, I can take care of myself. Sarah is a different story. She’s only 15 but that girl gets into more trouble in a week than I do in a month. If it wasn’t for our friendship, dad would’ve punished her by now for sure.
“I’m sure she’s fine. Probably hanging out with her other friends.” I say after watching him a few minutes. He nods and I take a sip of my punch, the fruity mixture fills my mouth and slides down my throat. His caramel brown eyes settle back on me and I can tell he is fighting the urge to go find her.
“Go.” I tell him with a wave of my freshly manicured hand.
“Are you sure? I know you don’t want to be left alone.” He says and I nod, my blonde curls bouncing. He pushes his way through the crowd and I am left alone by the punch bowl. Such a cliché prom moment, I giggle and take a deep breath, chugging the rest of my drink before going to ‘converse’ with people.
“Hey Addie.” Someone says from behind me and I glance over my shoulder to see a boy.
“Hi…” I trail off. What’s his name? Jacob? Rob? Hunter? Elijah? Ugh! I can’t remember.
“Great party.” He says and I thank him.
“You know you could just ask right?” He chuckles and I raise my eyebrow, a habit I got from my dad, along with lip biting.
“Excuse you?” I ask.
“My name is Steven.” He tells me and I mentally store his name. My guesses wasn't even close.
“Oh. I’m sorry.” I blush and he shrugs. Broad shoulders, I notice.
“It’s fine. I’ll let you go so you can find your mate, I just wanted to check to see.”
“If you was my mate. I’m 20 and no offense, you’re not. Happy birthday by the way.” He says sheepishly.
“None taken. Thanks. Have fun.” I say before walking off. I find Tyler scolding a glaring Sarah and I rush to stop him. Sarah’s eyes fill with relief and her thin arms wrap around me.
“Happy birthday Addie.” She says, peeking at from under her black bangs.
“Thanks Sar.” I say and she releases me. Tyler rolls his eyes and looks at me.
“You’re too soft.” He teases.
“No. You’re just to tough.” I retort causing Sarah to laugh.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell him.” She says.
After what feels like hours of dancing and talking to people, the party starts to die down. People come tell me happy birthday and leave, dropping off the occasional gift. So far, I’ve got a charm bracelet, $42 dollars and a stuffed white wolf, matching my own. Tyler had to go when Austin told him there was an urgent problem, not telling me what was happening.
“I’m going to head home, see ya.” Sarah says, handing me $10 dollars and leaving. Make that $52 dollars, I think and add the money to the rest of my gifts. When they’re was only about 40-60 people left, I make my way over to the refreshment table for my 4th cup of punch. I was about to pour me some when I hear a faint scream coming from outside the oak doors. I abandoned my drink and start towards the door. The remaining party people was about to start freaking out when I turned to them.
“Stay back.” I command and everyone moves away from me. I go to reach for the brass door handles when they swing open, barely missing my face. I see an worried Tyler, his hair sticking up everywhere. My pulse quickens and my heart drops. Something is really wrong.
“What is it?” I ask, trying not to freak out. Addison, you’re a Alpha female! Act like one!
“We’re under attack.” Tyler says breathless.
“By who?” I ask worried, my wolf threatening to break free. I struggle to keep her calm while still trying to calm myself.
“The Black Moon pack.” He says and everyone stops breathing. Lucas, the Alpha of the Black Moon pack, is dangerous and terrifying. Well, from what I gather from the stories. But I never thought they was true. The stories proclaimed him as a horrifying monster that brought death to a small village of families a few miles away, killing many children and parents. I never thought anyone could be that cruel. My grandmother agreed with me before she passed of old age. She always said, “Don’t judge him unless you actually know what happened.” I believed her.
All hell breaks loose as the windows crack then break, glass raining down on us and screams fill the air.
