Screams filled the air as everyone turned around. Right on cue I slung my axe, slicing through the brains of one of the walkers. I quickly pointed Killian’s silenced riffle to the head of the other walker and pulled the trigger. I took in a deep breathe and turned to face the group of newly found survivors. I looked over at all of them, there appeared to be 8. 3 women, 4 men and the little guy. My eyes stopped at the last man and i scanned him up and down.
You must think it was love at first sight, but it wasn’t his good looks that caught my attention. It was the big ass crossbow. It was pointed right at me, ready to shoot at any sudden movements. Another guy, wearing a sheriff uniform saw me looking at the crossbow and signaled the man holding it to lower it down. “You should watch your backs” i advised and turned around. Killian and Matthew were far away down the twisted road, out of sight. “Thank you” the man in the sheriff uniform told me. I simply nodded and started walking towards the guys. I heard footsteps following me and assumed it was one of the survivors. “What ?” i asked still not turning back. “Who are you ?” the man whose voice i identified as the sheriff’s asked.
“I’m just another survivor” i said stopping in my tracks for a while. I turned around when i heard the people in his group shouting out ‘Sofia’
“Did you see a small girl ? Light brown hair, brown eyes, pale face, wearing a blue t-shirt” he asked describing the girls appearance. I shook my head.
The sound of the timed church bell filled the air as everyone rushed towards the little box containing the timer. A Chinese-looking man ripped the timer out of the box and said something to the group. I suddenly remembered about how Killian must be struggling to keep Matthew up and started speed walking down the road towards them. They were now in sight and I rushed towards Matt’s side, sliding my arm across his upper abdomen and slinging his arm over my shoulder. I looked up at his pained face with saddened eyes. “Hang in there, we are almost there” i told him and he nodded lightly. As we walked near the church i could see Rick standing in the same spot he previously was. Though, now the crossbow and Chinese men were standing beside him, talking to him. Rick saw us making our way towards him and quickly came beside me, trying to help me out. I simply showed him the palm of my hand; telling him to stop. We continued making our way towards the church, and as we passed everyone eyed us. We finally came inside the church and i sat Matt in the front row. I re-positioned him so that he was more comfortable. I sat beside him and wrapped my skinny arms around his muscular once as i rested my head on his shoulder. Killian just sat their beside him keeping his hand on his shoulder reassuringly. “God.....have mercy on my soul and forgive me for all the people i had to kill in order to survive” Matthew said, his eyes fixed up on the statue of Jesus Christ.
3 pair of footsteps walked into the church and down the aisle. “He bit ?” a southern accent asked. I looked up so that my chin rested on Matt’s shoulder. It was the crossbow guy who spoke up. “He bit ?” he asked again, his voice rougher this time. I decided not to say anything and turned around resting my head on Matt’s shoulder. I should’ve know that the crossbow guy wasn’t someone to accept the silent treatment. So this time he decided to march down and stand right infront of us. “Is.He.Bit?” he asked again his voice more threatening. “Yes” Killian finally decided to speak up. An outraged expression took over the man’s face as he quickly pulled up his crossbow. But before he could pull the trigger, i stood up and pointed my gun to his head. “Stand down” i ordered him.
“Ya out of yer freaking mind bitch ? He’s no better than dead”
“It’s none of your freaking business. We will take care of it as we wish”
“When he returns as a geek, will then it be our freaking business!!??”
I flopped my riffle over and was ready to hit the man with the stock of my gun when Sheriff Rick decided to interrupt. “Stand down Daryl” he said in a more ordering and strong voice than before. “No shit ! They’ll all drive us to our graves!” Crossbow guy, Daryl said.
Anger rushed inside me as i raised my gun up again to hit him as hard as i could. “Soul...” Matt’s weakened voice calls me out “don’t”. I let my arms drop to my sides and turn my head to look at Matthew’s soft face. I simply nodded as i felt tears brimming my eyes again but shut them close and forced the unwanted tears back.
“Take me to the graves” Matthew said in a low voice, trying to stand up but failing every time. I quickly draped his hand over my shoulders and picked him up. Killian stood up and did the same. We slowly started walking up the aisle and out of the church.
We found a place where we could dig a grave and slowly made Matthew sit down on the grassy land. He instead decided it would be much more comforting to lay down. I sat down beside him and laid his head on my lap as i did before and started stroking his hair gently. “Kili, get the shovel from the truck will you ?” I asked. He nodded and made his way to the truck. He was much faster now than he was before, without Matthew hanging from his shoulder.
“How long ago was he bit ?” Rick asked sitting down on one leg. “not much, 20 minutes or so” i said my eyes fixed on Matt’s pained face. I hadn’t notice that Daryl and Chinese man had came after us. “Why are you waiting up ? Don’t you have a little girl to find?” i asked, finally looking up at Rick.
“No, we have to repay you” Rick said.
“There’s no need for that, just...go”
“We can’t. Even if the world has gone to shit, we still have some morals left”
I decided that it would be worthless to argue with a man of Rick’s stamina, so I simply nodded.
Matthew suddenly yelped in pain and he started sweating more than he was before. “shh shh it’ll be okay” i said and kept caressing his forehead. “i-it’s burning” he shuttered out. His face turned a shade of red as the burning increased with passing time. “I can’t take this anymore” Matt said.
“Wh-what are you saying ? You can’t just give up”
“it’s not worth it soul, i-it isn’t”
By the time Matthew finished his sentence tears started brimming my eyes again. “How can you even say that !!” i screamed at him. Matthew grabbed my hand trying to calm me down.
“Calm down Soul, you know i’m right”
Just as tears poured out of my eyes, Kilian walked back beside us. “What happened Soul?” he asked.
“nothing, he just want’s to shot himself in the head” I said sarcastically
“oh....well....” My eyes widened as he said that “how can you-” i was going to scream at him but he beat me to it my cutting me off. “it’s not your call Soul. You have to respect his decision”
I wasn’t able to say a word. I wasn’t ready to give him up yet. “Just, not yet.” I managed to mutter out as I bit the inside of my cheek trying to control the waterfall of tears.
“Don’t cry, you knew it was coming” Matthew said. I nodded but said nothing. Silent tears started falling down my face as i looked upon his face.
"Do you remember the time I pushed you off the swing ?" he asked, a small smile on his face.
"i thought it was by mistake"
He shook his head while chuckling "You were such a pricky brat then" he mumbled out with a happy but low chuckle.
"hey!" I said chuckling "well, you paid for it....with an ice cream"
He chuckled before letting out a happy sigh "that were the good times" he said. I simply nodded in agreement.
Time passed (i couldn't tell how long) as we sat there, enjoying our silent company.
“It’s time” Matthew said.
I opened my previously closed eyes. I somehow felt stronger now and knew i had to accept the reality. I nodded my head and slowly took out Kilian’s silenced riffle. I leaned down kissing Matthew’s forehead for the final time and pointed the gun to his temple. “See you in heaven” I whispered to him.
The moment slow motioned as I pulled the trigger. The riffle jerked back as the bullet left the barrel and pierced through his head. It was a clear as the bullet came out from the other side of his temple. That was it the 32 long years of his life ended just like that. A pull of the trigger ended it all.
