I sat in the trunk of our wagon my back leaning on the window, as i looked out at the surrounding forest. It was a hot and humid day like usual. “So, are you two related ?” asked Andrea, the blonde woman sitting in the middle row. “uh yea, we are cousins. Soul’s 3 years younger than me” Kili replied “I’m 32 and she’s 29”. Andrea simply nodded and continued looking out of the window. Rick and Lori managed to squeeze in the front seat beside Kili, who was driving. Carol, Andrea and Shane sat in the middle row while I was stuck in the trunk with Glenn; the chinese man, Carl; the little guy and the crossbow man, Daryl. I, being the person i was had to take them in. I couldn’t just leave them out there while i had a roof above my head, it was against my morality. “You should clean it back here” Carl said. I looked at him and nodded, trying not to too rude. I already regretted my previous decision.
~~a while ago~~
I and Kili stood infront of Mattew’s grave looking down at it. The tears were long gone and numbness had now taken over. “What should we do ?” Kili asked. I looked at him confused.
“With them. Do you think we should take them in ?” Kili explained
I looked over at them, at Carl to be more specific. “They do have a little kid” i said. “It would be against our morality to leave them alone” I said and Kili nodded in agreement.
“Hey Sheriff !” i said and both Shane and Rick looked at me. I motioned for Rick to come near me so that we could talk. “Yes?”Rick asked.
“we have a place to stay. It’s safe, at least for now it is” Kili said
“We would like you to move in with us” I said. “It’s much safer than staying out on the road”
“Thats very generous of you but we have to find Sofia. We told her to come back to the highway where we are. We have to stay there, it’s our best shot” Rick said
“Well, you can put up a banner and some food supplies where you are and then two people can stay out there till it’s dark. Plus our place isn’t too far away from the highway. Will take around 15 mins by foot”
Ricks eyebrows lifted up, a glint of happiness in them. “Are you sure though ?” Rick asked. I and Kili both nodded at the same time. A small smile made its way on Rick’s face as he speed walked to his people. They discussed a bit, but it didn’t take long for them to make the decision. Rick turned around to look straight at us a smile plastered on his face as he nodded at us.
I looked down at the floor to see the mat stained with Matthew’s dried blood. His black and white backpack laid in the corner of the trunk and I slowly slid it into my lap. It had different letters printed on it like Viva Army, fifteen, sixteen etc. but the word that caught our attention the time we bought it was ‘Soul’. He said it was THE backpack for him.
“So whose that ?” Lori asked pointing at the picture of me, Cedric , Matthew and Kili together in our backyard about 2 years ago. The picture was framed and attached to the dashboard of the car. “Uhm....That’s me, Soulara, Matthew and Cedric. Cedric was one of our friends .” Kili said “Is he....?” Lori asked a bit unsure “most probably” I finally said. Everyone's looked at me with either sympathy or pity. I couldn't help but scowl a little, to which everyone resumed their previous position.
The rest of the car ride was silent and somewhat awkward as Carl had fallen asleep next to Glenn. I would notice Kili checking up on me time to time through the rare-view mirror and Daryl stealing glances at me. It was awkward and annoying, but I decided to ignore it for now, not having enough energy to argue. I took out a book from Matt’s backpack “Complete stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe”. I had already read the book twice before but it wasn’t like I had many options. I couldn’t just sleep soundly with the amount of the blood i was drenched in. I carefully wiped my hands clear and flipped open the cover of the book.
