Never in a million years had i thought i would live to see the day the dead got resurrected. But here i was in the middle of a mall’s parking lot fighting the dead alongside my best friend. “Behind you !” his deep husky voice filled the cold air, and right on cue i swung my blood covered ax to slide through the brains of a walker. It fell on the cemented floor with a thud noise. “4 more to go” i calculated out loud. “I’ll take the two on the right” Matthew announced.
It wasn’t long before the 4 walkers laid motionless on the ground. Two of them had clear sliced-open brains while the other two’s heads were bashed in. The sound of roaring engine could now be heard as it parked just outside the sliding exit door. More agonizing groans emerged from the parking lot’s entrance as a dozen of walkers poured in.
Adrenaline pumped into my veins as i saw them. I started running, not noticing anything else. I slid the doors open and quickly jumped into the open trunk of the classic station wagon. I grabbed a-hold of Matthew’s hand and pulled him inside as fast as i could. I kept tugging and tugging at him, but his weight was way too much for me to carry. That was before i heard his agonizing screams. “Matthew !!” i screamed out his name when i saw a walker grab his left foot and drag him towards it. Sooner than i could react it chew off a lump of his flesh from his leg and scratched his back drawing blood. Adrenaline coursed through my veins as a buzzing sound filled my ears. I quickly took out my riffle from my belt and shot the walker right between the eyes.
With a single tug i successfully pulled Matthew in. I slammed the hatch door and window close shut.
The adrenaline soon wore off and realization took over me. Tears poured into my eyes as i saw blood gushing from his leg. ‘It was too late’ i comprehended. We could cut off his leg but couldn’t ignore the scratch in his back. It was already infected. I quickly took out my bandanna from my back pocket and tightly wrapped it around his wounds. I kept applying pressure hoping it would stop bleeding, but it didn’t; not even a little. “Soul” Matthew’s now painful and low voice called out. “hmm” i answered.
“Take me to the Southern Baptist Church. We aren’t too far from there” he mumbled out.
‘what was he saying’ I thought as I narrowed my eyes at him “no! We have to take you back so we can treat you! Keep you with us as long as we can!” i screamed out in disbelieve. Sure he was a religious person but how could someone still believe in god after all this shit went down. “w-what--” i was gonna start screaming again when Matthew cut me off.
“Soul, you and I both know it’s too late for me. I have lost way too much blood. Just--just let me have my final moments in peace” I wanted to start screaming at him again, but i knew he was right. There was nothing we could do about it. Even if we had a hospital and a whole team of doctors, it wouldn’t change a thing. I simply nodded my head and crawled to the back of the middle row and peaked my head up. My elder brother, Kilian was sitting in the driver’s seat. His gray eyes were set straight on the road as he drove down to our little hideout. The hideout wasn’t actually too far away from the church Matthew was talking about. A 30 minutes drive maybe.
“Drive us to the Southern Baptist Church” I stated monotonously and went back to sit by Matthew . I gently lifted his head and placed it onto my lap as i gently ran my fingers through his slightly curled brown hair.
“Is it naive to make plans that seem so far away.....”
I started singing “Let Love Bleed Red” by Sleeping With Sirens, knowing it was his favorite song. I felt him take a-hold my hand that laid beside his head. I stopped singing and looked down at him to make sure if he was alright. He was looking back up at me “Don’t stop, It’s been a while since I’ve heard that song” he said in a weak voice. I nodded and squeezed his hand lightly.
“Lay me down, and tell me everything will be alright......” I started singing again thought this time i smiling down at him as he did the same.
By the time I finished the song we had reached the Baptist Church. Killian parked the truck away from the church and behind a tree so that we don’t attract any possible walkers that could still be there.
Killian got out of the truck, a pair of riffle in both his hands. “Here take it” he told me handing me one of his pre-silenced riffles. “Check the place, I’ll bring Matthew ” he said. I nodded and made my way towards the church. I emerged through the forest and before me laid rows of graves. I walked by them as i continued gaining towards the church. Killian had slung Matthew’s arm around his own neck and supported him by leaning him onto himself. He followed close behind about 8 feet away from me.
As i came closer to the church I could see 4 to 5 figures standing in the doorway of the church, all of them looking inside it through the main entrance. The sound of slicing and stabbing could be heard coming from inside the it. They were so intensely looking at what was happening inside the church that they had not noticed two walkers making their way towards them. A little boy stood at the back, the closest to the walkers.
The walkers stretched their arms to grab the boy, still a feet away from him. I started running, hoping to reach him before the walkers could. They grew closer, inch by inch and before i knew it one of them grabbed the boys left shoulder, opening its mouth to take a bite.
