Supposedly there are links between all the Pixar movies, including the idea that lots of the movies happen within the same universe.

In Brave, Merida discovered "the-will-the-wisps" (magic). This magic turns her mother into a bear, but it's also reasons why inanimate objects (such as brooms etc.) behave like humans. Supposedly, this magic then goes on to create superheroes.
