Mute

"Can we visit the library?" Ronnie asked her mom, killing the silence in the car. "First day of school and you already have homework?" her mother questioned, confused. "No, no. There's this new boy who I want to be friends with," she replied. "And why do you need to go to the library for that?" "He's mute, mom. He speaks sign language... he seems like a nice boy and I felt bad for him. No one spoke to him," Ronnie explained,"His writing was messy and I couldn't understand his sign language." Her mom smiled,"So you want to borrow a book on sign language?" "Yes," she breathed,"I want to borrow a book on sign language."

1. Chapter 1

"What's the name of your teacher again?" Ronnie's mom, Mrs.Richards, questioned, trying to look over the ocean of elementary students and their parents. "Ms.Peters, mom," replied Ronnie, searching for her friends through the sickening crowd. She looked up at her mom to find a worried expression. "I can't seem to find her," her mom sighed,"Do you know what she looks like? I'm sure it'll male it easier." "She has bright red hair," explained Ronnie. It took a moment for Mrs.Richards to finally find her fourth grade teacher. "You must be Veronica!" Ms.Peters gushed, holding Ronnie's hands gently. "You can call her Ronnie," Mrs.Richards states politely. "Okay, thanks for letting me know," her teacher replied before gathering up her students. "I'll see you later, honey," Mrs.Richards smiles, kissing Ronnie on the head. "Bye, mom," she smiles before following her classmates to the classroom. "What a big classroom!" gasps her best friend, Sandra, hanging her backpack on her designated hook. "Yeah!" agreed Ronnie, hanging her bag onto her hook. It didn't take long for Ronnie to find her desk, being that it was at the front. At this point of her life, she very much loved school; she didn't find anything difficult. "Hello everyone! I'll be your teach for the year, Ms.Peters!" The class greeted Ms,Peters a 'good morning' before moving on to the introducing. They were supposed to announce their name and something they loved. "Let's start with the front row and we'll snake down horizontally," explained Ms.Peters, gesturing to the first row. "Hello, my name is Jaelyn and I love playing any kind of sports," a girl with a brunette ponytail introduced, The pattern continued. When it got to Ronnie, she nervously stood up with an awkward smile plastered on her face. "Uh, my name is Veronica but you can call me Ronnie," she directed this to the teacher,"I love listening to music and reading books." She gladly sat back down. Once again, the pattern continued. Everyone had unique favourites, like pottery, sewing, graffiti on paper... some even anime. It was all going well until a boy with sandy blonde hair stood up. He started to do some kind of hand language. Everyone bursted out into fits of laughter, but Ronnie was just stunned. "Class! Simmer down! Shhh!" Ms.Peters semi-yelled,"Ashton here is mute, he cannot speak, that's why he uses sign language to communicate. I studied sign language while in university." Immediately shutting up, the class mumbled a 'sorry.' "Go on, Ashton, I'll translate," Ms.Peters comforted. Ashton began doing his sign language with a nervous look on his face. Ms.Peters nodded and spoke up,"Hi, I'm Ashton and I love love love listening to music. Thank you Ashton." When the class finished, the rest of the day was a normal organization day; however, Ronnie couldn't take her mind off of Ashton. He always sat alone with no one to communicate with but the teacher. No one even bothered trying to talk to him. Ashton spotted Ronnie staring at him, but all he did was smile and wave. Ronnie waved back, a small smiled plastered on her face. ___________ When Ronnie sat in her mom's car, she hesitated before speaking up. "Can we visit the library?"
