"Mason... I wanted to ask you-"
"Shh." It wasn't a snap. Mason cut me off by shushing me, though in his face I saw mostly concern. He was looking at my wound, which I knew I had a few across my face and arms. His arms kept a steady hold on me and one of his hands kept my dress from falling off my shoulders. Right then all I could think was the fact that Loon would finish the Job for Kai and kill me.
"You're an idiot. Damn it I should have gotten you out of that estate the second Robin was distracted." As he spoke I realized the first bit wasn't for me. It was for himself. He was blaming himself for my kidnap. It was ridiculous and I grabbed his jaw with weak fingers. "Yes," I began "you are an idiot. You're an idiot for not kissing me sooner. Everything else was just bad luck." I let him go and I saw what might have been a hint of a smile. It was refreshing to see it after the hell I've been through. It was also amazing to be in his arms. I wanted to sleep. It seemed so easy with him holding me so close, but I know I couldn't. Not until we destroyed the lab and were safely out of this infernal mansion.
It took us several minutes to reach the lab, but it wasn't hard to find. I've spent years trying to forget my time in this mansion, time I mostly passed in the small room, yet I know the place like the back of my hand. I was a slave for the sisters. Kat and Karen were always nicer, but it didn't change the fact that I was to follow every order, no matter how much they might have wanted to release me of Kai's relentless hold. Back then when I wasn't in my room, I was up and down the large home, mostly running earns. When we went through a door-less frame we stopped. I was inching closer in case my legs gave out.
"This is it." Mason didn't ask. The room was damp and dim. It was large with three tanks that stretched from floor to ceiling in the far corner. Two were empty and the third was filled to the brim. Scattered around the room were tables with equipment I only saw once or twice. Not here though, in Kat's room. She was much into science like Kai was, only a lot less crazy. A few liquids were boiling over a small, blue flame and the lights were on. That shot a sense of slight panic through me because it could only mean that Kai must have been here not long ago.
"How'd you guess?" I asked, my fingers curling at the side of his shirt to hold on for support. Mason noticed my increasing lack of strength and wrapped one arm around my waist. He held me against him and looked down at me.
"Just the creepy aura. Now, where do we start?"
"Creepy? I'm offended."
I jumped. I couldn't help it. Being punished after getting caught somewhere you weren't supposed to be can do that to a person. Both Mason and I turned to face the devil woman behind us. She was still in the same clothes as last time I saw her. Only this time her hair was loose, resembling the ruthless flames of fire. There was also a genuaine interest when she looked at Mason.
"Mason," she began "so nice of you to drop in. I was hoping you'd be foolish enough to try and save little Jinx." Kai's voice was like a purr and then a hiss that sent chills up and down my spine. Mason felt my reaction to her words and gripped me tighter for reassurance. But, reassurance of what? Every inch of me feared the woman and the things she could do. Now, instead of feeling safe, I felt worry for both of us. First time Mason cmae up agaisnt her it seemed like pure luck. Now that Kai seemed a bit more determined I'm not sure this would end well for either of us. Mason and I.
"Take one step near Jinx and I promise by almighty Dazra I will put an end to you on the spot." There was something scary in his voice. It felt like his true self was unraveling and I wasn't sure I was ready for that yet, but the issue at hand was far more pressing. Kai grinned a cat like grin and took that daring step forward. Then it all went so fast. I was left on my own and I had to lean against the wall so I wouldn't fall. When I settled against it my eyes ventured left and right to catch up with both of them. Kai was perched over a table, her hair dancing around her as those pesky snakes slithered from her arms. Mason was standing across from her, his hands crackling and his eyes practically burning holes into her skull. The two figures left any solid surface and it looked as if neither of them would ever touch the ground.
"I need to do something." I mumbled over and over while the sounds of fighting filled the background. I was hard to ignore the fact that most of it was male grunting and I winced when I saw Mason get hit flat on the chest by a cursed shadow snake. It was nothing like the other snakes. The ones that came from her arm were real and they acted according to what Kai commanded, but the shadow snake was dark and attached to her shoulder. It acted as a whip and I remember I had the misfortune of knowing how it feels against my back. It lashed at Mason repeatedly. No doubt she's always been sadistic and sick, but it is now that I realize just how crazy she is. The pleasure filled expression she wore proudly only confirmed she was insane. Mason hit the floor with a loud thud followed by a crack. Kai's smile was still stretched across her lips and her figure was no longer in the air. She pounced of the table and onto Mason just as quickly as her hands found his shoulders. He was pinned down and I stared in horror as one of her snakes shot out of her arm and tried to bite its way into Mason's chest. It was going straight for the heart. A screeching laughter made my ears ring and I cried out for her to stop, but her banshee cackle wouldn't let her hear.
"He'll make an excellent addition to my collection of rare beings. He seems like a fun pet to dissect." Kai was humming that wretched melody I once loved playing. Mason kicked his legs up and his foot collided with the back of Kai's head. She lashed forward at the impact and Mason used that to toss her off him, and I do mean toss. His fist was was crackling again and it released a burst of light that seemed to be composed of various symbols. It placed enough space between him and her to regain his footing and charge forward, but she bounced back fast. Her feet moved as if dancing, and with every blow Mason threw she avoided. Until she finally managed to stand behind him. That's when King Cobra, her most powerful curse, slithered from her back. It was huge, bigger than any cobra i had seen. I knew she could cast that curse, but i had never seen it in action. I'm thankful for that, though this time I felt useless. Because I've never seen it I didn't know how to react and the thing slithered around Mason and began to squeeze. It faced Mason and the expanding mouth grew larger, large enough to swallow him whole.
"No..." Panic, anger, loss. It all came rushing back to me. I watched who might be the love of my life have his own squeezed out of him. He struggled to breath and I could only think of wanting to save him. I could if only I had control of my power. Still, control or not I focused on the tank the third tank in the lab. It was filled with water and at this point it was already boiling. Why it boiled could be associated with the fact that Kai would shower me in hot water, but the reason didn't matter. The tank began to crack and I waited, watched it and willed it to shatter. When it did, the waves crashed right into the witch and she fell forward from the pressure. I could tell she was screaming from the heat within the water. It kept her busy as I gained the confidence to guide some of the manipulated water towards Mason, or rather towards King Cobra. I was careful no to touch Mason, so the water thinned like a whip and it twirled around the cobra and lashed on to it's head. My fits closed and the snake's head came clean off. The rest of the body released Mason and he fell gasping and coughing.
Now that he was fine, I could feel my strengths weakening once more. Still, I kept a firm hold on Kai. She was fighting to catch her breath and I let the water lower so she could gasp in a ragged breath. The boiling liquid was still around her wrists, ankles and neck just to be safe she won't try anything.
"Release me!" Her screaming was rasped and forced. She gasped for it seemed the water was eating it's way into her throat. Her skin was less than flawless now, but it was her face that took most of the damage. The skin melted and her left eye was closed. Her hair sizzled and where the water restrained her it was quickly dripping blood.
"I don't think so." They were my thoughts, but Mason was the one to speak them. I nodded towards him and he pulled out a hunting knife from his boot that looked about nine inches long. He was somewhat limping, but recovered quickly as he reached her. His large hand grabbed what it could of her hair and yanked her head back to expose her neck to him. It made her shriek and where the water was boiling her skin he placed the knife, making blood stain the glistening blade. With a little muscle behind it he forced the weapon through. A death much like King Cobra's. When it was done I fell to my knees and Kai's body fell to the side. Soon after, my body rejected the hold on my power and I knew I had blocked what access I had to it. I wasn't proud of what had to be done despite the monster Kai was. I'm not her. I can't control a power that is somehow connected to her. Mason saw me, my trembling hands and let the severed head drop and roll towards a table.
"Jinx." He called. "Hey." I was shaken and my body refused to move at all. At least I opened my eyes to look at Mason and found him crouched before me with weariness in his eyes. He was pretty beat up, yet he managed to keep it together for my sake. "It's over." He told me. I believed those words with every bone in my body. "Let's go. I can't stand being in here another second."
With his help I stood up and leaned agaisnt him for support. I wanted to suck it up and walk on my own, but my whole body protested when I gave it a try. Which made him make a "tch," sound before saying, "Oh for Pete's sake." Mason picked me up in his arms and gently squeeze me agaisnt his chest. I thanked the heavens he got me off me feet and snuggled agaisnt him for comfort. Though he was beat and blody, I took a long breath in to surround myself with his scent. He smelled of forest, musk and leather. I closed my eyes for a bit of rest and managed to fall asleep instead. The last I heard was Mason telling me to rest, and the feeling of every step he took rocking me gently added to the soothing presence he radiated.
