By the end of the video there was a steady stream of tears rolling down my cheeks. I have to stop crying a million times a day. Luke put his hand on my back and rubbed in little circles. "I have to go get ready." I said wiping away my tears. "Oh yah you got the championship tonight." Luke smiled.
I walked up to my room and started to get ready. All my clothes were in the locker room but I have a few before game rituals. I have about 5 hours before I have to be there.
I put on my long sleeve shirt. I mean it's the middle of winter so just pads and a jersey won't cut it. I wrapped my necklace around my neck, and clipped it. My dad gave it to the day he died. On a sterling silver chain laid my dad's wedding ring. Before my dad died he had my birthstone encrusted into it.
The I grabbed a few tapes off the shelf and put them in my tv. My mom aloud me to have my tv every big game night. This is because I watch the recordings of my dads Super Bowl games. I laid down on my bed watching the tv with intensity.
After two games won I turned off the tv. I curled my hair and headed downstairs.
I saw Luke wearing a Aussie dogs shirt. That was my teams mascot. "Where did you get that?" I asked confused. "I did go to that school you know." He said as if he were talking to a 5 year old. "Oh shut up, I just forgot ok." I smirked. I at him for a minute or two when I spoke "I'm really nervous." I said this while fiddling with my hair. "Don't be." He smiled. "Oh my gosh, never mind, your no help." I smirked slapping the back of his head.
"Is it ok if I bring my mates?" Luke asked. "Yeah as long as you guys entertain my friends Skyler and Shae." I smiled raising my eyebrows. "What do you mean entertain." He smirked. I just rolled my eyes. "Where's my mom she's supposed to be here to take me." I whined. "She told me to take you and she would meet me there." Luke said grabbing his car keys.
I hoped into the car and sat on the edge of the seat. I took a deep breath as I settled into the seat. "What's wrong." Luke said starting the car. "I'm extremely nervous, this is our first championship." I sighed. "I know what will make you better." He smirked turning on the radio. "Turn it off." I screamed over the sound of the cd me and Luke made. "Oh you know you love it." He smirked turning it up. I covered my ears and shook my head vigorously.
As we rode in the car Luke sang along to all the songs on our cd. He was tapping on his steering wheel and moving his head to the beat. I could tell my face was bright red. I looked over at Luke and he didn't seem embarrassed at all.
All of a sudden the radio stopped. The car stopped 5 seconds later. I looked over at Luke who was trying to start the car. "You piece of shit car." He yelled as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Luke I'm gonna be late, I only 5 minutes left." I said rubbing my face. Luke got out of car, he slammed the door. I've only seen him this mad once. It was when I accidentally broke hi guitar when I 9. He didn't talk to me for a month.
He opened my door and I got out. "What are you doing?" I asked confused. "Well your gonna be late if we don't walk." He yelled as he turned the corner. I ran after him. As I got closer I leaned onto his shoulder. "What about your car?" I asked sweetly trying not to make him mad. "I'm gonna call toe truck after you go to the locker room." He said rubbing his neck. "I can walk there myself." I said walking ahead. "Yeah but you keep my mind from being stressed." He said as he ran up to my side. "It's gonna be like half a mile before we get there." I whined as I laid my head back on his shoulder. "I know what will pass the time." He smiled before he started singing. I hummed along to the songs he sang. He sang 'good girls', 'amnesia' and 'I can't remember' before we arrived at the stadium.
After Luke walked me by the stadium I left from his shoulder and ran into the locker room.
"Finally, what took you so long." Brenton yelled as ran up to me. "Luke's car broke down so we had to walk." I said going over to my locker. "Mich tore his ACL so coach needs you to play wide receiver." He told me as I started to change. As I put my leg pads on I started to comprehend what he said. I looked at him worried. "I haven't played wide since jr high, I don't know any of the plays." I said continuing to get dressed. Brenton walked over to a kid who was studying the play book and grabbed it. He walked back to me and handed me it. I rolled my eyes as I took it. When I was done getting dressed (all except my helmet) I sat on the bench looking through the book. About 10 minutes later coach came running in. "Let's go Aussies, and kick some dingo butt." He screamed. All the guys screamed back. I didn't, I was still trying to study the book. The team we were facing were the Australian dingos.
Just an FYI I'm taking about football as in touchdowns and field goals. Not soccer. I don't know much about soccer so I decided I would do football. Sorry if there was any confusion. Anyways back to the story.
This was the championship. Our last game to show what were made of. And I wanted to win it, win it for all the people who say girls can't play football, win it for the girls who want to play but aren't aloud, win it for my dad.
I took a deep breath as I stepped onto the field. We all huddled at the sideline. Coach Bradley told us our game plan for the night. It seemed like a solid plan. But at the same time I knew the Dingos would put up the same fight. This was our first attempt at a championship, this was there 3rd time. And if all went as planned for them it would be there fourth win.
I hesitantly walked over to my starting position. I could my feel my stomach gathering butterflies. I straightened my helmet. I looked at the man across from me. He was huge. He was about 6 foot or so and I'm only 5 ft 7 in. So there he was, his head tilted down at me, and starring into my green eyes.
As Brenton yelled 'set hut' I began run. I ran passed the man blocking me. When I got to the 20yrd line I stopped and looked back. The ball was hurdling my way. Then all of a sudden it disappeared behind a massive man. I knew the ball was ment for me and if I didn't get it would be an interception. I ran up behind the tall figure and jumped. What mean by jumped is I hopped of the ground then using the legs of the man as steps. He soon fell over and then blackness came.
As I opened my eyes I saw pitch blackness. I could feel massive weight on me. Second by second the weight relived and so did the darkness. As the boys left from my body I could see a faint figure in my hands. I gripped it tighter. As I stood up I felt a sensation of joy when I saw that brown ball with cream colored laces attached. I handed the ball to the ref. I then ran over to the sideline. My coach patted my shoulder. So after Brenton ran to the sideline giving me a hug.
-skips ahead to final minutes of the game-
We were a touchdown away, and in the final minutes. As I stepped onto the field I couldn't but feel happy. Happy that at least we made it this far. As I got to my position I waited impatiently. I couldn't stay still, my feet were going up and down in place. When Brenton yelled 'set hut' I ran. Ran as if my life depended on it.
As I got to the 10yrd line I curved around ending at the 20yrd line. I stood to wait to see if the ball would come my way. Brenton handed the ball to one of our running backs. Brenton then sprinted down the field. He stopped when he reached the end zone. The ball soon went towards him. I watched as a boy from the other team tackled him, right as he caught the ball. In our division if you knees hit the ground before you catch the ball the play is dead. The refs had to look at the footage.
As number 74 left from Brenton, I watched as Brenton still laying there, motionless. I looked up at the stands and I soon found my family and friend. But I didn't see Brenton's dad. He's a very busy man but I knew he would never in a million years miss a game. I looked frantically up and down the stands. I then spotted him running down the steps.
I looked down at the field. I saw Brenton lying motionless on the field. The medics started rushing towards him.
I looked over at my and Fio's mates. Shae was clung to Ashton's shoulder. Paige was griping tightly onto Michael's hand. Skyler was nuzzled into Calum's chest. I then looked down at Fio's mom, she was holding Matthew and Zoey. "Luke can you watch them I need to go down there." She said as she handed me the kids. I couldn't help but feel that Brenton replaced me. I mean I know Fio cares about him, but is it possible she likes him more than me.
I ran over to the gurney that Brenton was strapped in. "Brenton are you ok." I asked putting my hands on his chest. "Yeah in fine, I just got knocked out, at least that's what they told me." He said. "Well at least you won the game for us." I said cheerfully. "What are you talking about?" He asked confused. I looked up at the medic. "When he got knocked out he just forgot about today nothing serious." He told me. Tears started dripping from my face. "What's wrong?" Brenton asked as he slowly sat up. He wrapped his arms around me. I didn't want to tell him that I was sad that he forgot about what happened so I just lied. "I don't know." I laughed wiping away my tears.
Coach called us in. We all fled into the locker room. My mom soon fled in with Brenton's dad. Coach said that we could see out families while they checked out Brenton. Since my mom was already here and my soon to be dad I decided to find my friends.
As I ran out of the locker room I searched frantically for my friends.
Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a figure running towards me. It was Fio. As she leaped into my arms I spun around. As I set her back on the ground she slid her arms around my neck. She crashed her lips to mine. I was so taken back I didn't know what happened until it was already over. I starred down at her. Her green eyes were beautiful. She slowly pressed her lips to mine.
