We had been in the car for a couple of hours now and I could tell how tired everyone was and how hungry.
We left our bags in the hotel and some of our weapons but I still had my small knife and Calum and Luke had a gun, with a little bit of bullets left.
I wonder if Lydia was dead or just gone. Michael just shook his head, so now I know anything could have happened.
I haven't eaten in a while and I know the boys haven't eaten either since about a couple of days ago, and it's really getting to us.
We haven't stopped driving, we keep taking a couple of hour shifts here and there. At least they finally trust me to drive after the incident.
When we entered Oregon, it looked like it had never been touched by the apocalypse. Sure, there was no one to be seen for miles, but the wildlife was still nourished and looked like something out of a movie.
Luke was sitting in the passenger side, sleeping and I was driving very carefully, making sure I don't flip the car like I did last time.
I tried to stay awake and I let my eyes close for one second until Luke startled me.
"Open eyes please," He said groggily.
"Sorry," I whispered, not wanting to wake up Calum in the back.
"It's okay I know you're tired," Luke said quietly.
"I'm fine," I assure him.
"Em, what happened at the hotel, I just want to say I'm sorry. I should have stayed with you under the bed," Luke sighed looking at me, I glanced at him and looked back on the road.
"Luke it isn't your fault, I-"The engine made a weird noise and the car stopped.
"What happened?" Michael asked from the back.
"The car..something is wrong," I said stepping out of the car.
Luke followed me out and lifted the hood, and smoke came out.
"What did you guys do?" Calum asked stepping out of the car.
"I don't know it just stopped," I said shrugging my shoulders.
"Guys, um we might want to find shelter or something," Luke said.
"Why?" Calum asked.
Seconds later, a couple of rain drops started to spill from the sky, then it started to rain heavier.
"Where do we go now?" I ask.
"In one of these shops, this music place looks boarded up nice. We can probably enter through the roof," Michael said loudly, the rain raining heavier.
We jogged over to the shop, almost slipping.
"Emma can you go in through the vent from the roof? After just unlock the front door," Luke asked, but more like said.
"Here take my gun," Luke said handing me it.
"Is it loaded?" I asked him, referring to the first day with him.
"Yes I promise this time," Luke reassured me.
He lifted me onto the small roof and I pulled myself up.
"Just open the vent and crawl through," Calum said.
I kicked open the vent as it slide down into the store.
I crawled through, head first and listened quietly to see if anything was done there.
They told me to crawl through, however I was not aware that I would have to slide down.
I fell strait down,on my side and rubbed it in pain.
"Ouch ouch ouch," I said getting up, holding my arm.
I was inside the music store, all pitch black except from the windows providing me some light.
I walked over to the door and undid the chain and pushed it open.
"Thanks Em," Calum said walking in first.
As everyone got in, I gave Luke back the gun.
"See, nothing happened," Luke said smiling.
"Yea you're lucky-"
"Hands up!" I heard Calum say, holding the gun and pointing it toward the darkness.
"What are you doing?" Luke asked walking over to there.
"There is someone in here with us," Calum says to Luke.
I look over to the counter and see a comic book opened and a flashlight. I grab the flashlight and point it to the darkness. There, I see a guy holding a gun in one hand and a little girl behind him, holding on to his leg.
"Calum put the gun down," I say looking to Calum, who hasn't moved.
"Calum do it," Luke says.
Calum does so and same for the guy.
"Who are you?" He asks.
"No one you should be afraid of," I assured the man.
"I'm Faith!" The little girl says smiling at us.
"Hello Faith," I say waving at her.
"Faith, what did I tell you last time? You can't talk to strangers," The man says looking down at the little girl.
"Oopsies," Faith laughs as she sits down and plays with his shoe.
"Is that your daughter?" Luke asks.
"Yea, she is," The man says smiling at the girl.
"I'm Luke, The one with the red hair is Michael, the one who pointed the gun at you is Calum, very sorry, and that's Emma," Luke introduces us.
"I'm Ashton," The man says nodding at us.
"How old are you?" I ask Ashton.
"I just turned 26," Ashton says.
"What about Faith?" Calum asks.
"Three," Ashton answered.
"And mommy?" Michael asks.
Ashton looks at us, sympathetically,"She left right after Faith was born."
"Oh well I'm sure she wouldn't have been a good mommy anyway," Luke says smiling at Ashton softly.
"Yea, our area is in the back if you want to join us." Ashton said leading us in the back, Ashton scooping up his daughter.
We followed Ashton toward the back, Faith making noises as we went.
"Logan, we have some company," Ashton says.
A candle is lit near bye and I catch a glimpse of a boy.
Ashton turns on a light and a single light bulb lights up, lighting the room.
"Guys, meet Logan, Logan meet Emma, Michael, Calum and Luke," Ashton says.
"Hey," He says nodding at us.
"Hi Logan," Luke says.
"How old are you?" I ask.
"14," Logan says.
"Is Logan your son?" I ask Ashton.
"Stepson yea," Ashton smiles and helps Luke grab blankets out.
I help make a spot for everyone to sleep and sit down on the floor.
"Where are you guys headed?" Ashton asks.
"We're heading to the CDC, figure out what is going on," Calum answers.
I hear Faith giggle, I look over and see Luke braiding her hair.
"That seems like you're trying to save the world," Ashton continues.
"When did you learn how to braid hair?" I walk over to Luke sitting next to him.
"Well I did have a little sister ya know..She made me learn," Luke smiles softly.
"You are pretty!" Faith exclaims at me.
"She is, isn't she," Luke nodded, smiling at me.
"Thanks Faith, but you are way prettier," I compliment.
"Is he your boyfriend?" Faith asks me, tilting her head to the side.
"Oh no we are just friends," I say putting my hands up.
Luke pouts and continues to braid her hair.
"Do you have a hair thingy?" Luke asks opening his hand out.
I take the hair elastic off of my hand and place it in his.
"Thanks," Luke said.
He tied her braid at the bottom of her dirty blonde hair.
"There, go show daddy," Luke said as Faith got up and ran towards her dad.
We all sat around the candles Ashton set up since it was getting dark, not wanting to attract walkers.
Faith and Logan were asleep on the couch and we were laying on blankets.
"What's your plan Ashton, just gonna camp in here till it's over?" Michael asked.
Ashton shrugs,"What else are we supposed to do?"
"Come with us," I offer,"you would be safer with more people to help."
"I don't know..we have been safe here. We have been waiting for the military to come and take us to San Francisco," Ashton says.
"San Francisco is safe?" I ask.
"That's what my radio said until they stopped broadcasting."
Calum shakes his head,"Military won't help. Trust me I know."
"What do you mean? Are they dead?" Ashton asks.
"No," Luke says,"but they want us dead. They want to end the virus so they are pretty much killing all the innocent, to make sure no one is infected, bitten or not."
"The roamers are getting slower, winter is coming so it could slow them a little bit," Michael says.
"What if there isn't anyone left in the CDC? What if it's all gone?" Ashton asks.
"Well we can at least try. If there isn't anything there, we can go to LA like we planned, then after go to San Fran where it's safe..unless we can find a boat and settle on a island." Calum offers.
"Maybe we could grab a plane...helicopter or whatever and fly out of the states...could be safe. Maybe only the US is the only place affected,"I suggest.
"Well we can find out when we get to Portland," Luke shrugs.
"So will you come with us Ashton?" I ask, but it seems like I'm begging.
"Yea, might as well try. We could starve in here...I'll pack up tomorrow." Ashton agrees.
"Great, sounds good. Do you know any good car places around? Unless you want to walk, but I feel like we wouldn't get far."
