"How is it already cold?" Zoey laughed as she and Remus sat together on a carriage to Hogsmeade. Peter, Lily, and James sat across.
"So where's Sirius again?" Peter asked in a small voice.
"He got caught slipping dungbombs into Slughorn's closet," James answered
"Weren't you doing that with him?" Remus asked.
"You let him take the blame, correct?"
James winced. "I wasn't going to very well miss the first Hogsmeade trip, now was I?"
Lily whacked his shoulder. The whole group laughed.
Lily and Zoey got into a conversation about Salem, James was chatting absentmindedly with Peter, (while trying to pick-pocket him.) Remus just stared at the grey clouds. He was deciding whether or not to get a butterbeer. If he didn't, Zoey and the others would question why he wasn't, and he would probably be pressured into buying one anyway. But if he did, then he would have hardly any money left. He needed some to buy presents for Christmas later in the year, plus Sirius' birthday was coming up soon. Maybe he could think of a good excuse not to buy a butterbeer. The full moon was coming up soon, he could say that he was already feeling the effects. Then there was the problem of Zoey not knowing. She would question his so-called "condition."
"Getting one, mate?" James asked as they walked closer to the dreaded pub.
Thinking quickly, Remus said, "Nah. Not today."
"One what?" Zoey questioned.
"A butterbeer. It's - kind of hard to describe. It's one of those 'have to be there' kind of things."
"Is that good or bad?" she laughed.
"What can I get you, dears?" the old bar lady, Edna, asked the quintet.
"Five butterbeers," James smirked. "On me." Remus breathed a silent sigh of relief.
"My granddaughter, Rosemerta, is helping me today. I'm planning on giving the place to her once I retire. D'you mind the newbie making it?" Edna pointed to a girl about their age on the other side of the pub.
James whistled. "Of course not, Edna. I think she'll do just fine." Remus rolled his eyes and led the group to a table.
"So," Lily said. "James and I were planning to head to the Madam Puddifut's later."
Peter crumpled his nose. "The tea shop? I don't -"
"Alone," James explained.
Peter blushed. "So, I guess it's just you two and me, huh?"
"Uh..." Zoey hesitated. Peter's face fell.
"Why don't us three go to Honeydukes together after this? Then Lily and James can to the teashop and hang out all they want?" Remus suggested. Zoey's face fell, but Peter seemed pretty happy with that solution.
"Come on!" Zoey urged.
"No," Remus argued. "I'm not leaving Peter alone in the store."
"Seriously? I know you don't want to hang out with him, you're just too nice to say anything about it."
"Even so -"
"You're not denying it."
"Even so, I can't leave him. He'd get really mad, plus the Slytherins have been bullying him. What if they come here?"
"He's seventeen, Remus. I'm sure he'll be fine." She led him out of the candy shop. "Sirius mentioned something about a haunted house?"
Remus sighed. "Of course he did."
"Can we go see it?"
"You're not scared, are you?"
"No, it's just not a good -"
Zoey gasped teasingly. "You are scared!"
"I'm not scared! Fine, come on, let's go!" Zoey just laughed.
