The next morning, Lindsay woke up in a pitch-black room. This wasn't her home. Where was she? It's dark in here, she thought. Suddenly, a light turned on. Lindsay started to wail. And now it's too bright!
"Your eyes will get adjusted to the light."
Lindsay looked up. Where am I? Then she saw Baby Intelligence at his desk. Is this the MBH?
"I am Baby Intelligence," he said. "I am the leader of what we call the S.M.S.B., and formerly, the X-Babies. The S.M.S.B. stands for the Super Mutant Smashing Babies."
The X-Babies. Does that mean--but she shook off the thought, knowing Peter couldn't hear her.
"You have been asked to join our group. Can you speak?"
Lindsay shook her head.
"Then try this on," Baby Intelligence replied. He gently put a headset on Lindsay's head. "Think what you wish to say, and I will hear it and reply."
Lindsay nodded. Why am I here? Are you adopting me, Peter?
"In a way," Baby Intelligence replied. "I have seen your power. You are what they call a mutant."
Then I really am a mutant, Lindsay replied with a frown. And a confirmed freak.
Baby Intelligence shook his head. "My dear, you are not a freak. You are a mutant, and a pretty gifted one."
I'm not sure I understand.
"You will, but it will take time. For now, let me introduce you to the team." Baby Intelligence took Lindsay's hand and guided her to the training ground. To his surprise, Lindsay could walk.
"On the left is Baby Strength," Baby Intelligence said. "He has Super Strength, allowing him to perform beyond average feats of strength. And on the right of him is Force Baby. He can use the Force, which gives him speed, telekinesis, and other powers."
Where are the rest? Lindsay asked. She was still wearing the cap.
"Our team used to have 5 people," Baby Intelligence replied. "But one joined the dark side, and one was killed. And finally, I have super intelligence, agility, and telekinesis--the ability to move things wit my mind without touching them." He paused. "So, will you join?"
Lindsay smiled as she reached out her hand. Baby Intelligence returned the shake, and the deal was sealed.
Baby Intelligence was about to call the other two up to introduce their new member when the siren blared. "Get to the Pinewood Derby!" he called. "Training's over!"
In a nearby room, Baby Strength and Force Baby stood on an unusually large tile on the metal ground. Lindsay asked Baby Intelligence through the cap why they were doing so.
"That isn't just any oversized tile," said Baby Intelligence. "Watch!"
The tile descended slowly, leading Baby Strength and Force Baby to an elaborate garage. Baby Intelligence took Lindsay's hand and looked below. "I hope you trust me, Lindsay."
Of--of course, Lindsay replied.
"Then jump!" He took Lindsay's arm and they both jumped down to the bottom, where both landed unharmed. "Get in the back," he said, and reached for Lindsay's cap. "You won't be needing this during our mission."
What mission? But the cap was off; Baby Intelligence could no longer hear her.
"Hello," said Baby Strength. "Who are you?"
"Lindsay can't speak yet," said Baby Intelligence.
"Oh," said Baby Strength. "Is she new?"
"Yes," said Baby Intelligence. Behind him Force Baby shook Lindsay's hand. Lindsay looked ahead.
"Do we have a seat for Lindsay?" Baby Strength asked.
"Yes indeed," said Baby Intelligence, and pushed a button. A seat ejected from below Lindsay, and a seat belt wrapped around her legs.
Baby Intelligence took off, using a radar screen to pinpoint the trouble.
