"So, it turns out I'm the best fisherman out of us all." I said laughing to Neely as the lift took us up to my floor. He had just picked me up from the airport. My trip in the States was over unfortunately and it was time to hit the books again for my next round of summer classes.
"In a way I'm not surprised." He was laughing right along with me. I knew he would find it humorous that I had caught more fish than everyone else on the boat. The elevator dinged and the doors opened to my floor. Neely grabbed my suitcase for me and we started making our way to my door.
"So how was your time off?"
"It was great actually. I met a -" He suddenly stopped talking as we arrived at our door, his mouth hanging open. The sight before me made me feel cold and terrified and my hand instinctively grabbed a hold of Neely's arm.
Jake was leaning with his back against my door, a smug look on his face.
"Why hello there Raegan." I got the chills at the sound of his voice saying my name. Not in the good way, but in the scary and freaked out bad way. Neely stepped in front of my protectively.
"You need to leave." He said sternly.
"Why's that?" Jake replied with a twisted look on his face.
"You're in violation of the restraining order. So leave."
"Hmmmmmm.........................I don't think I will thanks."
"You need to leave before I call the guards." Neely insisted.
"Like I said......" Jake answered stepping towards us as he reached inside his pocket for something. "I don't think I will." With that he pulled out a gun and pointed it straight at Neely's forehead, making me yelp. Neely put both his hands up and took a step back, looking right into Jake's manic eyes. "Call the guards and you die."
"There's no need for this." Neely said, still sounding firm and authoritarian-like. He wasn't one to show weakness or be pushed around in a situation like this. It's his job to keep the situation under control. He was probably trained in situations like this.
"That's the thing though. There is a need for this. She just doesn't seem to get it." He started, taking a step towards me. "We're supposed to be together." With the gun still pointing at Neely with one hand, he reached out to my face with the other, placing it under my chin. I tried to avoid his gaze, but he forced me to look up at him. "It's such a shame you don't know how to listen." The way he was articulating his words reminded me of the Joker in the Batman movies. Completely creepy, terrifying and bizarre all at the same time. As he spoke to me, I silently begged for someone to come out of the lift or for a neighbor to come out his or her apartment. I would take any kind of interruption now, just to make it all stop.
“She doesn't need to get anything. Please leave." Neely tried asking of him again.
“Apparently you have some terrible hearing my friend.” Jake said as he returned his cold gaze to Neely’s eyes. “I’m not going anywhere until I’m finished with my business.” His eyes returned to mine as my entire body trembled out of fear. “Now Raegan, or what is it that he calls you? Rae baby?” My heart sunk at his words. Only Niall calls me Rae baby, and the words sounded wrong and muddled coming from his lips, like poison to my ears. “We don’t have much time, so I’m going to ask a few things of you.”
“Okay…” I stuttered, my heart racing and nearly about to jump out of my chest.
“As of today, you will no longer go to the guards and tattle on me the way you have been. My messages are something to enjoy don’t you think?” He was so twisted and messed up. The way his thinking came across scared the hell out of me.
“Okay…” Fear riddled through my tone.
“Also. You will remove the restraining order. It’s rather unnecessary don’t you think?” He hissed as he said the word ‘unnecessary’ making me shudder.
“Are we done here?” Neely cut in. Jake snapped his head over to look at him and pressed the gun hard against Neely’s forehead.
“And the last request I have, or should I say the last demand…” He chuckled, completely creeping me out. “…is that you break up with Horan. He isn’t right for you.”
“You’re wrong.” I said quietly, the words escaping my lips before I could stop them. His eyes grew wide before he shook his head and chuckled again. The evilness of it all was just seeping out of his pores. He removed the gun from Neely’s head and placed the barrel to mine, making me whimper like a little girl, tears streaming down my face. Neely continued to stand there with his hands in a surrendering position as Jake stared into my eyes with his evil ones.
“Actually I’m right. And if you don’t do what I say, I will kill you.”
“You wouldn’t….” I whispered.
“But I would. If I can’t have you, no one gets to have you. So do what I say, and everything will work out for the both of us.” He removed the gun from my forehead and slowly placed it back in the pocket of his pants. He took a step back, looking over at Neely, then back over at me. Neely wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close to him protectively.
“Call the guards, and I will know. It’s useless anyways, they’re not helping you, they’re helping me.” Jake warned. Confusion crossed my mind, wondering what he meant. Were the guards purposely botching this case for Jake?
“Oh don’t look so lost you little puppy.” He reached out and pinched my cheek. “I’m sure you’ve been wondering by now why nothing has been done. Nothing will be done, I’ve got a guy.” My heart sunk at his words just thinking of the corruption and all the puzzle pieces of my mind clicked together. No wonder Jake has been getting away with such obvious offences, the police haven’t even been trying at all. Jake somehow has his them all wrapped around his fingers. Niall has been questioning the guard’s motives for weeks now, but I continued to have faith in them and the justice system, but I was wrong.
“Now, remember my demands and all will be well. Goodbye Raegan. See you soon.” Jake cooed, brushing my cheek with his hand. I flinched, pulling my face away. He turned and calmly made his way to the stairs, casually leaving a very fucked up situation. As he turned the corner, a sob escaped my lips and my entire body trembled. Neely pulled me into his chest squeezing my body into his, letting me soak his shirt with salty tears. It’s no Niall hug, but it felt good to be in his strong arms, protected from the hell we just experienced.
“I don’t know, he made it pretty clear that the guards haven’t been doing anything.” Neely muttered into his phone, furrowing his eyebrows. I think he was on the phone with Paul, trying to decide what to do about the situation. Ordinarily one would call the police immediately after such a situation in which someone points a gun at you while simultaneously breaking the law of a restraining order, but Jake’s threat seemed very clear to me. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s got the police doing his dirty work, and the detectives are no longer taking my case seriously. In the end it makes sense. Niall’s been saying it for weeks that something was up, but I shook his suggestions off, having complete faith in the justice system. How could I not? My father is a wholesome and very successful prosecutor, and puts bad people away all the time. I have been raised in having the benefit of the doubt for people.
Neely and I were in my living room, trying to relax, but failing miserably at our efforts. After standing in the hallway for twenty minutes while I soaked his shirt and clung onto him like a leech, we finally made our way into my flat. Now he and I were on my couch, drinking tea and trying to chill out.
“Okay.” He continued into the phone, looking over at me. “I’ll talk to her. No, I think she’ll agree it’s best.” I quirked an eyebrow, wondering what they were talking about. “I agree. It’s all we can really do without caving into demands.” I sighed at what I was hearing. Despite the threat Jake put on my head, I did not intend to cave, and I’m glad that Paul and Neely agreed. I knew I would be in more danger, now more than ever, but my stubborn side refused to let some stalker try to ruin my life.
“Right, thanks Paul. I’ll keep you updated. See yah.” With that Neely hung up and heaved a sigh as he continued to look at me.
“What’s gonna happen now?” I asked him.
“For starters, we’re changing the car. I’ll let you pick, but it can’t be another range rover. I know you love those but…..” This made me laugh.
“Okay….” I told him, a smile crossing my lips. “Continue….”
“We’re going to be staying at my place for the time being. And we will just drive into the city for class and work. It’s hardly a drive, so that shouldn’t be too bad.”
“Okay.” This time it was him smiling at me. I think he expected me to freak out and say no to that. I mean yeah, the situation isn’t ideal, but you’ve gotta do what you gotta do I guess.
“We’re not removing the restraining order, but we won’t be going to the guards any further. Paul wants record of the order, but understands that nothing further is being done about your case. As for Niall….we don’t need to do anything at the moment. Just don’t be tweeting at each other or posting pictures online. He’s away so you won’t be photographed together or anything like that. So for now, it's all good on that end of things."
I smiled at him. For a second there I thought he was going to say we needed take a break or something. In reality, I know that Niall would understand, but that would be too hard on the both of us I think. Just thinking about having to possibly become a secret couple again was daunting and frustrating. It was hard enough the first time, and not something I wanted to do again.
“Does Niall know about what happened yet?” My voice sounded small as I asked him. To be honest, I wouldn’t want to be the person who delivers that news. I could only imagine how he would react to hearing that his girlfriend just had a gun pointed to her head.
“Uh, no. Paul made the decision to not tell him until after the show tonight.”
“I think that’s probably for the best….”
--Niall’s Point of View--
I could feel the sweat dripping off my face as the guys and I walked into the dressing room. I threw myself onto the couch, snagging my phone from the coffee table to check my messages. As I looked back up from my phone I was surprised to see the guys all sitting around. Normally Liam hops in the shower first, while Lou and Zayn call their girls, and Harry is usually off talking to the other Lou or something.
“No shower Liam?” I asked him, curious as to why our routine wasn’t going as planned.
“Paul didn’t tell you?” He asked me, raising an eyebrow at me.
“Uh no, tell me what?”
“He told us that he needed to talk to us all right after the show.”
“Bout what?” I had no clue as to why he needed us all here. We’ve been behaving for the most part, and as far as I know there haven’t been any changes in the plans on tour or anything.
“Don’t know. He said it was important though.” Liam explained. I just shrugged my shoulders and went to call Raegan when Paul walked in.
“Boys.” He greeted us as usual, giving us a smile. He sat down in one of the armchairs facing us all, a serious expression suddenly taking over for his smile. “Something’s happened that you need to know about.” The guys and I all gave each other worried looks. I’d be willing to bet that right then each of started mentally jumping to terrible conclusions. My thoughts immediately went to Rae, making my heart beat a little faster.
“Just spit it out Paul.” Harry said calmly, trying to keep his cool. Paul sighed before looking right at me. Shit.
“Raegan is in more danger than we previously thought.”
“What?” I spit out the words, my face immediately getting hot.
“Is she okay?” Louis said, sounding concerned.
“What happened?” Harry chimed in. Zayn put his hand on my back and gave me a sincere concerned look.
“When she got back to her flat today, Jake was waiting for her and Neely.” Paul started to explain.
“Jesus Christ.” I mumbled to myself, every scary thought running through my mind as I rubbed my eyes trying to push back any tears. They were tears of anger, frustration and pure love for my girl.
“He pulled a gun on them, and placed some serious threats on her.”
“He didn’t touch her did he?” I said angrily. Paul heaved a sigh, trying to remain calm himself. He has grown very fond of Raegan, and considers her part of the family. He even wants to introduce her to his family.
“The gun was placed to her forehead, and Neely said Jake kept touching her face.” I abruptly stood up and kicked over the coffee table, anger coursing through my veins. The asshole put a gun to her head. How could I not be angry? I started pacing as Paul continued on, everyone casually ignoring my irate outburst.
“He threatened to kill her if she doesn’t do what he told her to do.” Paul tried explaining calmly. His fists clenched just like the rest of us, and I knew he was mad too.
“What did he say to her?” Liam asked looking over at me with concern.
“He told her to stop reporting his messages to the guards, drop the restraining order, and to break up with Niall.”
“Not gonna happen.” I muttered, still pacing around.
“We weren’t planning on that, so don’t worry.” Paul said to me. “He also made it clear that the guards are not actually trying on Raegan’s case at all. There’s a possibility that he is paying them off or threatening them to pretend that nothing is happening.”
“I knew it!” Louis exclaimed, anger riddling through his voice as he practically jumped out of his seat. “Niall and I were just talking about it the other day how fishy it is that nothing was getting done.” Paul nodded, acknowledging Lou’s statement. I think he suspected it too.
“I’ve been thinking it too.” He said, nodding.
“I’m calling Rae right now.” I said reaching for my phone.
Paul put his hand up to stop me. “Niall, wait. There are some things we need to go over first, and remember she’s probably sleeping.” That’s right, there’s about 5 hours in between the two of right now. Shit. I sat back down next to Zayn on the couch, ready to listen to the rest of what Paul had to say.
“First off, no more tweeting Raegan, or talking to media outlets about her. Niall, no more public lovey stuff on the internet, and guys, no more friendly banter for the world to see. We do not want the press talking about you as much. If someone asks, just say your management has advised you not to discuss the relationship for the time being. Got it?” Paul said to us. We all nodded in response to his question. It sucks, but keeping quiet for the moment is for the best. “Second, if you guys plan on any surprise trips, let me know. We’re moving Raegan from her flat to Neely’s place, just for now. So if you want to see her, tell me and I’ll get you there.”
“What about the girls? Perrie and Eleanor were going to surprise her in a couple of weeks.” Zayn asked Paul. I had almost forgotten about that. Raegan had no clue the girls were planning on showing up at her door to take her out shopping to find something to wear to the movie premiere in London.
“I will call them tomorrow and work out the plans. We don’t need the paparazzi finding out where she is staying. If that’s alright with you guys.” Paul said looking at Zayn and Louis. They both nodded at him. I hoped Eleanor and Perrie would understand. He stood up and looked us all over. “The most important thing is to just try to keep things hush hush. Got it?” He asked us before leaving. We all mumbled out yes’s as he walked out.
I immediately pulled out my phone to call Raegan. I know her well enough to know that she would rather me call her in the wee hours of the night than wait to hear her voice. I imagined that she would want to hear from me anyways, and is probably just as restless as I am. The guys all stood up to get back into our after show routine, but not before slapping me on the back in the brotherly way that they do. As I dialed her number, my stomach did flips, nervous that something else could have happened to her already….
