My phone started to ring again, and I didn't need to look at the screen to know who it was. Niall hadn't stopped calling me for the last five hours. I'm almost positive he started calling me the moment his flight landed, since then, my phone hasn't stopped ringing for longer than fifteen minutes.
To be honest, I hate that Niall and I fought at the airport, but I couldn't help it. I just got so angry. Not just at him, just at the situation in general, and I definitely took my anger out on him, which was unfair. After Neely brought me home, I holed up in my room since I couldn't go for a run, and did some serious thinking, and I finally came to my own conclusions. I was wrong to get mad at Niall for trying to do the right thing. He really is only trying to help, and make sure nothing happens to me, and I truly love him for his efforts. It means the world to me and I shouldn't complain or take it for granted. Because if having this bodyguard follow me around means that Jake goes away, then it worked. But, I still do think that Niall should have told me that Neely would be living with me, and that he was planning to put the Jeep at his dads house. So I was still a little peeved about that. But in the end, I'm truly sorry that I yelled at him.
My phone started to ring again, interrupting my thoughts. I looked over and swiped it off my bed, pressing the answer button.
"Rae baby, finally. I thought you might never answer me." He said, sounding exasperated, sad, and almost desperate. I would probably sound the same way if I had tried calling my girlfriend over a hundred times with no answer.
"I needed some time to think, and cool off. I don't like it when we fight."
"Me either. I hate it. And I'm sorry. For everything. I shouldn't have yelled at you in the airport. I didn't mean what I said about you being ridiculous and spoiled. You're none of those things at all. I was just angry with you for being angry with me. But I get why you got mad. I should have told you about Neely sooner instead of just throwing it on you before I left. Same with the Jeep. I should have asked you first. I just didn't trust that you wouldn't drive it."
"You don't trust me?" I asked him, kind of shocked. I would trust Niall with my life. Paul told me not to drive the Jeep, and I wouldn't have gone against his word.
"Of course I trust you. I was stupid to think like that. I just got really worried, and overreacted. I'm sorry." I could picture him sitting on the end of the hotel bed, running his hands through his hair messing it all up. The thought was kind of cute actually, and knowing that we could get through things like this was comforting to me, especially when I thought about the future. Now it was my turn to apologize to him.
"I'm sorry too." I started, biting my lip. It's something I do when I'm nervous or thinking really hard, or even turned on. "I shouldn't have yelled either, and I was taking my anger about Jake out on you, which isn't fair. I'm still not completely pleased with the bodyguard situation, but I understand that it's to keep me safe. And that means the world to me that you would do that for me. I don't deserve it after yelling at you."
"You deserve everything you could ask for. One fight doesn't make you a bad person love. We'll probably have plenty of fights with each other in our lifetime." His words made me crack a smile.
"Thanks. I miss you already."
"I miss you too." He said into the phone, his tone sounding very bittersweet. I was starting to completely regret not giving him a proper goodbye.
"I'm sorry I left. We didn't get to say goodbye." I told him, starting to feel guilty.
"It happens. Our next hello will be even better this way."
"I hope so."
"It will be. Now don't worry about that stuff okay?"
"I'll try not to.....when do we get to see each other again?" I asked him.
"I don't know yet. Soon though."
"Babe, I really hate to say it, but I've got to go. The lads and I have to get up early for a morning show, and I refuse to give whoever is in charge of make-up and excuse to put some under my eyes."
"Okay. I love you." I said chuckling to myself. Niall hates makeup, unless it's for Halloween.
"Love you too. Try to sleep well tonight yeah?"
"I'll try. Goodnight."
"Night love." With that I hung up, not wanting to think about how long it would be until I saw him again.
"Hey Neely, can you come here for a second?" I yelled through the kitchen. I was preparing dinner, tonight we would be having some beef stew, since Neely told me it was one of his favorite foods in one of the few conversations we've had. For living together and going everywhere together, we've hardly talked. I don't really know much about him, and I want to get to know him.
"What's up?" He asked me cautiously as he entered the kitchen. He was still as quiet as he was the day we met at the airport, and I couldn't blame him. I haven't really been all that welcoming. It's been more than a week since Niall and I's argument, meaning it's been more than a week since Neely's been living here, and we've hardly talked. I wanted to apologize to him and start fresh. If we're going to be together all the time, we mine as well become friends and learn to enjoy each other's company.
"You can sit if you'd like." I told him, gesturing to one of the stools adjacent from me n the other side of the kitchen island. He pulled out the stool and sat down, then reached over to one of the cutting boards, grabbed my spare knife, and starting cutting up the carrots. I couldn't help but smile at his gesture. He really is a kind person from what I can tell.
"Look. I want to tell you I'm sorry. I know it's been uncomfortable for you here. I haven't been very welcoming, and that's not fair to you at all. I'm just a little weary you know?" He nodded, and I continued on, hoping I didn't sound like a total idiot. "So I'm sorry. And thank you for doing such an amazing job at looking out for me." I really mean that too. Since Neely's been here, I actually do sleep easier at night with the exception of the occasional nightmare. And I'm almost positive that Jake would have approached me by now, if he hadn't been by my side for the last eleven days.
"You're welcome." He said to me, still cutting the carrots. "I was starting to think you hated me." He chuckled to himself.
"Not in the least." I told him with a smile.
"Friends?" He asked, sticking out his hand.
"Friends." I shook his hand. Then the two of us went back to cooking our stew.
"Oh and Raegan?" He said as he continued to the carrots.
"I like running too, so if you want, I'm sure it would be okay if we went together." I smiled at him. He was already trying to make the best of this situation, which I appreciated.
"I would like that."
As I opened the door of the old building, I immediately scanned the courtyard for Neely, and found him rather quickly. He started walking toward me with a smile on his face. That was the thing about Neely, he's always smiling, which is a great quality in a person. After I apologized to him, he started opening up to me a lot more, and we've learned a lot more about each other. For example, I now know that he's an only child. His Dad is a carpenter and his mom is a secretary. He grew up just outside of Dublin and still lives in the same town when he isn't on jobs like mine.
"How was class?" He asked as we caught up to each other.
"Eh, kind of boring. Thank God I have the rest of the week off. I don't know if I can handle anymore of that professor." The two of us walked over to the car. Another great thing about Neely is that he let me pick what car we would drive around in. Of course I chose a beautiful black Range Rover, just like Nialls. I loved this car, so it was a given that I picked it. He was also very polite, always opening the door for me everywhere we went. Niall would be pleased knowing that his leading lady was being well taken care of.
"Anywhere you need to go?" He asked me as he started the car.
"Just home. I've got a lot of homework to do."
"Home it is."
--Niall's Point of View--
We should be there in ten. Leaving now.
I heaved a sigh, and shoved my phone in my pocket. Thank god for Neely helping me out on this one, along with Raegan's stubborn ways. The detectives told her not to give anyone the spare key to her flat, but she snuck one on my keys when I wasn't looking at some point. I couldn't scold her for it, it was my only way to get in the place and surprise her.
I was getting more nervous as I paced the room. Surprising Raegan is one of my specialties, I love to do it, I always will. The look on her face every single time gets to me. I don't what it is, probably never will. Although, today, she might freak out over what I would be asking her at the end of the date. She's the kind of girl who likes everything planned ahead of time, and my question for her is very last minute, but I hoped she would say yes anyways.
As I was pacing, the painting caught my eye, making my footsteps stop. I stood there and just looked at it for a moment, admiring it. I could see the tiny trace of the tear down the middle, a reminder of a terrible memory. But the painting made it through, and so did we, and that's all that matters really.
Taking my attention of the painting was the sound of someone fiddling with the locks on the door. I heard Raegan curse, then apologize to Neely for cursing. I've noticed that she secretly curses sometimes, but always apologizes if someone is around.
Finally the door opened. She didn't notice me standing there at first, her attention focused on hanging her bag up on the hooks under her mirror. But when she turned back around, the look on her face was priceless. A smile slowly creeped onto her face, and she walked towards me slowly, as if she didn't believe I was actually there. She looked beautiful as usual, her long red hair flowing, her blue eyes all lit up.
I opened my arms for her and pulled her close. No words were exchanged, they weren't really needed. After our fight a couple weeks back, every single day I didn't get to see her got harder and harder as the time passed. I've only been gone two weeks, but this time it seemed ten times worse than usual, probably because the last time we were screaming at each other in the middle of the airport.
Eventually Raegan pulled away from the hug a little, placing her lips on mine kissing me soft and slow.
"You ready love?" I asked her looking her eyes.
"Ready for what?"
"I'm taking you on a date." I told her, smiling away. I couldn't help but smile all the time when I'm around her. It's just the way she makes me feel. I grabbed her hand and Neely led us to the car. He would be driving us everywhere of course. From what Rae's told me, he hasn't left her side for a minute.
As he started driving, Raegan rested her head on my shoulder and closed her eyes. She seemed content. In fact, she actually looked a lot less stressed out compared to the last time I saw her. I would never give her a spiel on how I was right, but lets face, I was right.
"We're here." Neely said, putting the car in park. Raegan lifted her head off my shoulder and peeked out the window.
"Where are we?" Raegan asked looking back over at me.
"You'll see. Now c'mon." She opened the door and the two of us climbed out. I grabbed her hand and led the way to the building. We were at the Dublin Cookery School, I was treating Raegan to a cooking class. She loves to cook, and today we would be learning to make some different sorts desserts.
"Dublin cookery school?" Raegan asked, pointing to the sign next the door.
"I thought we could spend the day learning to bake. Then eat it all after." I explained to her, grinning at the thought of spending the next couple of hours with her and getting to eat a bunch of good food.
"Sounds good to me. Well done Horan." She said with a sly smile.
I opened the door for her and we entered the building. As we walked in a middle aged woman greeted us in the foyer.
"Hi, you must be Niall, and this must be the lovely Raegan you told me about." She said shaking my hand. "I'm Lynda, it's a pleasure to meet you." She shook Raegan's hand as well.
"Nice to meet you as well."
"Well, you ready to get baking?" She asked, looking excited.
"Absolutely." Raegan and I said in unison, making her giggle. I love her laugh.
"Follow me then." Lynda said. "We've got to get you suited up." We followed her down the hallway to a room filled with aprons and chef's hats. She handed us each a set and we got all tied up. Then we followed her to the kitchen. As I walked in, my mouth dropped open. It was the nicest kitchen I'd ever seen, probably loaded with an insane amount of food.
"Wow. I hope my kitchen looks like this someday." I heard Raegan say quietly as she admired the room, running a hand across the marble counter tops. Hopefully I can give her a kitchen like this someday. Hopefully I can give her everything she could ever ask for someday.
"So," Lynda started, smiling at us amateurs. "The first thing we're going to make is lemon meringue pie. You guys ready?" We looked at each other then back at her.
"Ready." We said in unison again.
"First we have to start with the crust...." Lynda showed us how to start making a pie crust. After that we moved on to making the lemon filling, and I could tell Raegan was loving every bit of this. I loved watching her as she seemed so happy. After the filling we had to make the meringue part, which was pretty easy. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting all the leftover meringue off my face that Raegan had wiped on there when I wasn't looking. If I didn't have any respect for Lynda, I would have started a food fight right then and there, but I didn't want to mess up her kitchen any more than we already were.
Once finished with the pie, we put it aside to eat later. "Alright, you guys ready to give the strawberry rhubarb cream tart a try?" Lynda asked us with a big smile. I think she liked us, or at least found of funny. With us cracking jokes and teasing each other, we weren't anything to be taken seriously and the banter between Raegan and I was making her crack up. It felt good to be so relaxed, playful and carefree again.
First thing we had to do was make the crust that would go on the bottom. This wasn't an issue for Raegan, I think she got some pleasure in throwing the pecans at me every so often, but of course I would throw them back her too. She had a knack for catching them in her mouth. After the crust, we had to make the rhubarb filling. I was mixing the blend in the bowl with the mixer thing when suddenly the bowl went flying across the counter, making Lynda and Raegan start laughing hysterically at me.
"Damn, I just made a balls of that job." I was covered in rhubarb.
"Is this why you don't cook?" Raegan said in between her laughs. Lynda was still laughing too as she went to go pick up the bowl across the room.
"Maybe." I said, inching towards her with the tub of cream cheese.
"What are you doing?" she asked me still laughing as I cornered her into the counter.
"Payback baby." I stuck my finger in the tub and went to go smear the cream cheese on her face.
"No no no no!" Raegan said giggling trying to cover her face.
"Too late." I said grinning. I wiped a large amount of cream cheese across her face making her giggle even more.
"You goober." She said playfully as she wiped it off. I started leaving short and sweet kisses all over her face as she scrunched her nose up all cute like. Hey, at least I was helping her get it off.
"My cheeky man." She said with a sigh after all the cream cheese was gone. She kissed me quick on the lips then we went back to making the tart. All we had left to do was make the cream cheese filling then put that and the rhubarb filling on the crust we made earlier. After that, Lynda helped me put the tart in the oven, while Raegan wiped down the counter.
The last thing we would be making was a Red Velvet Cake.
"Oooooh, Red Velvet Cake is the most romantic cake of all cakes you know." Raegan told me, her eyes shining beautifully bright.
"Is that so?" I asked her, straightening her chefs hat before it fell off.
"Absolutely." Lynda chimed in. "Let's get started."
First we had to make the batter, and we would be doing it from scratch. After putting all the ingredients into the bowl, Lynda showed Raegan, but mostly me, how to properly use the mixer to make a perfect batter. It actually came out pretty good, and it sure as hell smelled good. I couldn't help but lick the mixer sticks free of batter once it was all done, Raegan helping me out some. After that we had to make the icing, which tasted just as sweet. Soon after, I helped Raegan put the cake in the oven, and all we had left to do was wait for it to bake. Lynda prepared some tea for us and we started munching on the lemon meringue and the rhubarb tart. Both looked absolutely incredible, and I had to mentally remind myself not to eat like a pig just because something tastes good. My mum would kill me if she ever heard that I wasn't using my manners.
"So, I have a confession to make to you two." Lynda said as she handed us our plates of pie. The three of us were sitting on the barstools of the kitchen island.
"What's that?" Raegan asked her, curiosity in her voice.
"I think you guys, are the cutest couple to come through my doors." She said. I looked over at Raegan. Her cheeks were rapidly turning bright red, and small smile came across her face. I reached for her hand under the counter.
"Thank you." I said. "That's really nice."
"I only speak the truth." Lynda said with a small smile before taking a bite of the lemon meringue. After a little while of chatting, Lynda stood up to pull the red velvet cake out of the oven. "I've got to make a few phone calls, but you guys feel free to stay here and eat as much as your heart desires for as long as you like. It's been a pleasure teaching you both."
"Thank you so much. You're an excellent teacher." Raegan told her, with her perfect smile. I still couldn't get over how beautiful she looked today, even when she was covered in flour, rhubarb and icing.
"Feel free to wrap everything up and take it with you. Everything for that is in that drawer." Lynda said pointing to a drawer next to one of the sinks. "Just make sure you pop in the office and say goodbye okay?"
"Course. Thanks again." I told her. With that she waved goodbye and left the kitchen, giving Raegan and I some alone time, which was appreciated.
"I think we should put the frosting on this. Don't you?" Rae asked me looking over at the bowl of frosting on the counter.
"Sure." I answered her, getting nervous. She stood up, grabbed the bowl and one of those things you use to spread it, and started working on the cake while I just watched. She was very concentrated on making it look right. Something I've come to learn about her is that she is very laid back when it comes to some things, but a perfectionist about other things and apparently frosting a cake is one of those things.
"Raegan, I need to ask you something."
"Hmmm?" She looked up at me inquisitively. I don't even think she heard what I said because she was so focused.
"I said I need to ask you something."
"Will you come to Greg's wedding with me?" She stopped spreading the icing around and froze for a moment, processing what I asked her.
"But isn't that tomorrow? Don't you have to leave in like 2 hours?"
"Yes. But I'm allowed to bring a date, and I want to bring you. I've been meaning to ask for a while but to be honest I forgot with everything going on."
"But, I'm not even packed for the night. I don't have an outfit to wear or anything."
"I'll help you." She went back to icing the cake, but this time she was hardly paying attention to what she was doing. I could see her thinking it over. Something was buggin' her, I could just tell. After a few moments she spoke up again. This time softer and more reserved.
"What if your family doesn't like me?" I heaved a sigh. She would worry about that. She's always worrying about something. I stood up off the stool, grabbed the spreader thing and put it down on the counter.
"Raegan Mckinley Moynihan..." I started, taking both her hands in mine and holding them between our chests. "...my family is going to love you. They've been wanting to meet for a while now. You have nothing to worry about, so please stop worrying." She wrapped her arms around me and we just stood there in a hug for a while, her head leaning on my chest as I kissed the top of her head.
"I'll go." She whispered after a few minutes of quiet, a small smile breaking her frown.
"Then we better get going."
"I told you! I have nothing to wear! What am I going to do?" I heard Raegan yell from her bedroom while I dug my way through her cabinets, looking for something good to eat. I was still starved despite the dessert dinner we had just a half hour ago. I was completely relaxed at the moment, while Raegan was completely un-relaxed. I couldn't exactly blame her though. I did only give her an hour and a half to get ready, and apparently that is not nearly enough time. She insisted on taking a shower, and now she couldn't figure out what to wear for tomorrow. And we're supposed to leave in thirty minutes. Lucky Neely, Raegan told him that he could have tonight and tomorrow off to do whatever, so he didn't have to listen to her yelling down the hallway about clothing for the last hour. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind her yelling, I just don't know anything about girl's clothes, and what you should and shouldn't wear to a wedding.
"What about what you wore the night we met" I yelled down the hall before snagging a bag of crisps from the cupboard. She looked cute in that.
"Are you kidding me? I'm not wearing that!" She yelled back. Alright then.
"What about what you wore to the concert?"
"You can't wear jeans to a wedding Niall!" She yelled back to me. She was really freaking out in there. "And now I can't find my makeup bag!"
"You don't need it." I yelled at her.
"Not helping!" I didn't answer her, figuring it would be best to leave her alone while she made a decision. I turned on her TV and started flicking through the channels. After a few minutes, I heard Reagan coming down the hallway.
"I'm almost ready." She said as she walked in the living room, heaving a sigh. "Do you think this will look okay? It's not too short is it?" She held up a light pink dress with red flowers on it in one hand and some skin color shoes in the other.
"Can't you just go with no clothes on?" I asked her cheekily.
"You would like that wouldn't you?" She said grinning at me. I'm glad she takes my cheeky remarks the right way, rather than getting all annoyed about them.
"Yes I would actually."
"Well for now, I'll be wearing this. Once I put it in my bag I just have to grab some pajamas. Do I need anything else you think?"
"I think you're good. You've been in your room for over an hour now."
"Watch it Horan." She said jokingly before strutting back to her room, giving me a nice view of her bum. I really can't help myself sometimes.... Within a few minutes, she came back out with her bag, ready to go.
"Ready love?" I asked her, shutting off the TV as I stood up off the couch.
"Ready." She said, smiling at me as she grabbed my hand.
