I pressed the gas pedal a little harder, antsy to get to the airport. I was on my way to go pick up my brother Briley and his girlfriend Erica, and couldn't be more excited. The two lovebirds were off from work for vacation, so they were coming to visit me. It worked out great because they didn't even need a hotel because they could just have the guest room at my place. Neither of them have been to Ireland before and I couldn't wait to show them the city. I still hadn't had the opportunity to explore other counties and go out west, so I couldn't show them much of that, but I would definitely make sure they would leave her loving Dublin almost as much as I do.
I pulled off the ramp, and pulled into the airport parking lot. I knew my way around here from the few times I had seen Niall off. I grabbed the sign I made to hold up just like the real drivers do, it said "Idiot + Lovely Girlfriend." It would give Briley a laugh for sure. I entered the airport and walked straight over to the arrivals board. Their flight just landed, meaning they would probably make it the foyer area in about a half hour. Now was the perfect opportunity to call Niall, he was a bit disappointed that he would be missing Briley and Erica's visit. He and my brothers still talk all the time, and its probably safe to say they were very good friends at this point. I think my father may have called him once or twice as well to get his opinion on some football matches.
I pulled my phone from my Northface jacket and dialed Niall's number. I was expecting to just leave a voicemail, but it rang only once before he picked up. That was surprising since I figured he would be rehearsing and wouldn't answer. The first show of the Take Me Home tour would be today in London.
"Hello love." He was practically panting on the other end.
"Hello handsome. How come you're panting like an animal?"
"Because I raced Lou all the way to the other side of the arena and back. It's huge."
"Gotcha. Did you win?"
"Yep. I did. Aren't you proud?" He said chuckling a bit.
"As always. I'm at the airport waiting for Briley and Erica, so I figured now would be a good time to call you and wish you luck tonight." I smiled. He probably didn't have a clue how proud of him I was. I definitely take pride in how talented Niall is. I wouldn't dare a person to try and tell me that One Direction's no good, because every single one of those boys practically men are talented.
"Thanks babe. I'll be singing for you tonight. And the fans of course."
"Right, we can't forget the fans now can we?"
"Never." He said. I could picture him being all sweaty and smiling as we talked. Just the thought of his out of breath sweaty self was endearing. "Well thanks for calling babe, but I've got to get to sound check."
"Alright, break a leg okay?"
"Thanks Rae. Talk to you tomorrow, or maybe even late tonight, I'll just call you next time I get the chance."
"Sounds good to me. We'll talk soon."
"Okay, bye love."
"Bye." I hung up and put my phone in my pocket. Now that the tour was officially taking off tonight, I knew we wouldn't be able to talk Niall as much on the phone and the computer, but I would be seeing him soon. The first round of Dublin concerts were in a couple weeks, so, all the guys and I were going out after the first show. And then the concert Edin and I are actually going to is just another week after the first shows, so I knew I would see him then too, even if it was for a short time. The next week would fly by with my brother being here and all, I didn't feel too sad about Niall being away for the time.
I looked at the phone to check the time. I still had about 25 minutes to wait, so I started pacing, to the amusement of the actual taxi drivers. I was definitely not cut out for all this waiting around. Eventually I stopped pacing once I could see a hoard of people piling through the main doors, many of them shoving away their American passports. I held up my sign as I stood between two other taxi drivers, and scanned the crowd for Briley. Soon enough, I heard his laugh first, then saw the rest of him as he approached me.
Still laughing he wrapped his big muscular arms around me in a brotherly hug, picking me up off the ground. "Nice sign shit head."
"I figured you would like it." When he let go of me, I gave Erica a hug, then grabbed one of her suitcases to bring to the jeep.
"So how was the flight?" I asked.
"It wasn't too bad at all. I slept most of the way." Erica told me.
"Speak for yourself! The flight attendant spilled my whisky on me twice in a row! Then they ran out of those little pillows right as I asked for one." Erica and I started laughing at Briley. He has the worst luck sometimes. As I walked up to the Jeep, Briley started commenting on it.
"You're kidding right? This is your car?"
"Uh yeah, it is." He shook his head me smiling to himself.
"Only you would buy an exact replica of the car you had at home."
"Don't hate on it unless you want to stay at the airport tonight." I told him, giving him a sassy look. "Besides, in case you didn't notice, its not an exact replica. The steering wheel is on the right."
"That's going to take some getting used to."
"It does." I said smirking. The three of us hopped in the car and we were off, heading back to my flat. As we drove back to my place, I did my best to be a makeshift tour guide, pointing at different attractions and my favorite places and things in the city. We eventually pulled into the private park behind my building, and made it up to my front door in no time.
"I can't wait to see your place. I bet you decorated it so perfectly." Erica said to me as I fiddled with my keys.
"Thanks, I think it looks good enough for right now. But I'm no decorator." Briley rolled his eyes. I opened the door and we walked in. Everything was just as I left it, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Every time I leave my place I always worry that I'll come back to the same mess that Jake left before.
"Wow....I love it." Erica said as she dropped her bags by the door. Briley did the same and started walking around the place, practically inspecting it while Erica and I just chatted. After a few minutes he came back around the corner from the hallway.
"Well done little sis. It looks good. Where'd you get that?" He asked, pointing at the painting in my living room. Erica was already admiring it up close, and he walked over to join her, putting his arm over her shoulder.
"Niall got it for me. It was my Christmas present." I told him.
"It's beautiful." Erica said, still admiring it.
"Thanks. I have to agree. Well I'm going to run and get my mail before we go get some lunch." I left the two of them to get settled while I ran downstairs to the lobby where all the mailboxes are. I put my key in the slot, expecting only bills, but was pleasantly surprised when I reached in and pulled out a thicker and slightly heavier purple envelope with my name on it. I smiled when I looked at the return address, it was from Niall. Who knows what it could be, he loved to surprise me. I tucked all my mail under my arm and went back upstairs.
I plopped my butt on the couch and ripped the purple envelope open. Inside was a card. The front had a pretty picture of a lilac on it, and on the inside there was a beautiful quote. I recognized it as something Charles Dickens wrote in one of his books.
"She was more than human to me. She was a Fairy, a Sylph, I don't know what she was - anything that no one ever saw, and everything that everybody ever wanted. I was swallowed up in an abyss of love in an instant. There was no pausing on the brink; no looking down, or looking back; I was gone, headlong, before I had sense to say a word to her."
It was an absolutely beautiful quote, and my heart melted at the thought of Niall choosing this card. I knew for a fact that he could care less about Charles Dickens, but that the quote must of had meaning to him when he was browsing through the shelves. On the other side of the card there were what looked like tickets taped on all four corners with a handwritten note from Niall underneath.
I want to be able to see your beautiful face when I sing for you.
I looked back up at the tickets and it dawned on me that they were for the show that Edin and I were going to on the thirteenth. But they weren't just any tickets...they were front row and VIP passes. I couldn't believe it. Not only would I be going to the concert, but I would be front row and hanging out with the guys backstage. It's perfect. He is perfect.
"What are those?" Erica asked as she sat down next to me on the couch while Briley disappeared somewhere.
"They're tickets to the One Direction show. Niall sent them to me in this card." I handed her the card. She opened it up and read it.
"Awwww, that's so cute. He really is nuts about you huh?"
I smiled a big grin. Even just a card from him had that sort of effect on me. I could care less about the tickets, only his efforts truly matter. But I had to admit, those tickets were a pleasant surprise too.
"I guess so huh?"
"Well don't let him go then. According to Briley, you guys are great." Erica said as she sat down next to me.
"He said that?" I asked her.
"Yeah on the plane we talked about you two. He can't get enough of Niall." She said chuckling a bit, while I rolled my eyes. It was still humorous to me how well my brothers got along with Niall when they met him.
"Figures. I'm starved. Are we waiting on Briley?"
"Do you even have to ask?" She said to me, both of us laughing. Briley likes to snoop around wherever he goes, so he was probably looking through my desk or something at this point. Or maybe he was in the bathroom playing with his hair. I stood the card up on the coffee table, and slipped the tickets into the drawer underneath for safe keeping. Now I just had to talk with Edin and see what we wanted to do with the old ones. I'm sure they were expensive, and she would likely want to sell them.
"Alright, I'm ready to go!" Briley said as he walked back into the living room.
"About time." I told him as I stood up off the couch. Erica followed my lead and grabbed his hand. "You guys ready? Grab your coats, we're walking." We all put our jackets on and left, locking the door behind us.
I knew exactly where I was going to take the two of them for their first lunch in Dublin. I wanted to take them to Gogarty's, a classic and brilliant Irish pub. I had been with Niall before, and it was definitely one of my favorites. In fact, it was the place that Niall and I had our first kiss. The walk isn't bad, and the pub food is great and always was worth the trip.
As we walked in, I heard Briley say to Erica "Now I get why she loves it here. I would too if I could drink all day." I chuckled a bit. Looking around, the place was about half full, and everyone had some sort of drink on front of them. Typical Irish stereotype... I found us a table and ordered a round of pints for the three of us, Guinness of course. I mean, you wouldn't come to Dublin and order a Murphy's would you?
Lunch was great time, and after a few pints for each of us, I paid the tab and we left. Briley and Erica were a little bloated from the Guinness, not used to how heavy it is. After lunch, we walked all through the temple bar district, hitting different shops and such. I tried to tell them about the places I liked to frequent and any stories I knew about the local hot spots. After walking around, we all went back to the apartment to have a kip. Briley and Erica were jetlagged, and I was just tired in general. I definitely needed a nap.
After my nap, I plopped my butt on the couch and did some homework. My school work was as hard as usual, especially with me taking the extra class to catch up in the nutrition program. I had two papers due next week, a lab report and tons of reading, all waiting for my attention. As I went to open one of my textbooks my phone went off, it was a text.
Do your guests know about what we have?
How annoying. Leave it to Jake to harass me when I'm trying to focus. I wasn't surprised a bit considering he harasses me all the time now a days. I just hoped he wouldn't try to do anything else to taunt me while Briley and Erica were here. Briley would go insane if he knew what Jake was doing to me.
Before setting my phone down, I sent a text to Niall thanking him for the amazing tickets, and to wish him luck again. Even though he doesn't need any luck since he's so talented already, I do it anyways, because I love him and miss him like crazy.
After putting my phone aside, I got back to work on my homework. It was going to be a long night of grueling nutrition work.....
"Pssssst!" I rubbed my eyes open and looked over at my alarm clock. It was seven in the morning, I should still be asleep until nine. "Pssssst! Rae! Wake up!" I looked over at my bedroom door to see Briley sticking his head in wearing his big goofy grin. "Good morning, you up for an early morning breakfast? Just you and me. Sister brother time. You lead the way, and we'll bring some back for Erica."
"Yeah, just give me like ten minutes to get dressed." I said, yawning at the end of my sentence. He gave me a thumbs up and shut the door behind him. I threw the covers off of me and stretched. After my stretch I stood up and quickly got dressed, just throwing on some yoga pants one of many shirts I have of Niall's. This one in particular was a Ramones shirt that I'm pretty sure he may have stolen from Harry. Oh well. After getting dressed I brushed my teeth and put my hair up in a messy bun, not really caring about any make up.
I opened my bedroom door and headed towards the living room, walking on my toes so I wouldn't wake Erica up. I found Briley stretched across the couch with the TV on, watching the morning news.
"You know, it doesn't seem like much goes wrong here." He said to me as I walked up to him.
"That's because not much does."
"Very. You ready to go?" I asked him.
"Yep, lets get out of here." He stood up and grabbed his coat while I grabbed mine, and we were off.
We walked to the cafe from my place, because Rachel makes the best breakfast sandwich around. As we walked in Briley found a table while I went up and ordered.
"Well hello little Yank, you're up bright and early." Rachel said to me. I hadn't had a shift with her in a while since I mostly work at night, so it was refreshing to see her smiling face and hear the usual jazz music playing in the background.
"That I am. My brother and I are getting breakfast."
"Lovely, is he going to move here too?" She asked as she put in an order for two of my favorite order. An original bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel. She didn't have to ask what I wanted because she knows me that well.
"No, he's just visiting." I told her as I handed over some euros to pay.
"I see, well make sure you show him a good time okay?"
"Oh you know I will." I said laughing. I returned to my table while she worked at making our breakfast. Briley chose the window seat, my favorite.
"So this is where you work huh?" He asked me as I sat down.
"Yep, I love it here. My boss is amazing." After a few minutes of waiting, Rachel brought over our sandwiches. Normally we don't bring them over, the customer picks them up, but she always treats me special.
"So," Briley started after taking a bite into his breakfast sandwich. "I need to know what you think of Erica."
"I think she's great. You guys are adorable."
"You mean that?" He asked me, suddenly serious.
"Yes I do. I've never seen you so sappy and cheesy until she came around. You seem really happy." He rolled his eyes at me.
"Well, I'm going to ask her to move in with me."
"Awwwww! You're so cute!" I told him gushing over the idea. He rolled his eyes at me again.
"So when are you and Niall going to move in together?" I swallowed my bite whole out of surprise, nearly choking at his question.
"Uh what?" I choked out after taking a big gulp of tea.
"You heard me."
"Briley we've only been dating a few months. Don't be ridiculous."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean you're not serious about each other. It doesn't take long to figure out you love someone once you meet them." I couldn't believe this. I could not believe that my older brother of all people, was talking to me about love. It was totally unexpected.
"Go on, please, this is refreshing hearing you talk about love." I said, half joking, half not.
"I mean it Rae. It was obvious to me the minute you introduced him to me that you guys are serious, and you're supposed to be together."
"Yeah honestly. You guys remind me of mom and dad. You know, they always say they loved each other right off the bat. We've heard the story about a million times." He said rolling his eyes. He wasn't kidding. Everyone in the family knows how Dad fell in love with mum the minute he saw her working at an old fashioned ice cream parlor. He gained ten pounds in a month because he went in to order ice cream every day until he had the courage to ask her out on a date. From their it was like a fairytale. They got married within a year despite their parents wishes.
"They do say that a lot..." I said, contemplating his words.
"And look at them now. They're freaking nuts about each other to this day."
"So what I'm saying is, don't fuck things up with Niall. We all think he's great, and its obvious you think he's more than just great. So don't freak out and get scared about the commitments lying in front of you, because that guy loves you and will take care of you through whatever life puts you through. You mean everything to him, and I'm sure he means everything to you too. How long you've been dating doesn't mean anything when you love someone."
At that moment, it dawned on me how much my brother Briley has grown up in the last few years. All through college he only cared about getting as many girls as possible, and refused to believe in finding that one person in life that matters most. He was the typical selfish frat boy who only cared about getting laid. He would always scoff at mum and dads love story. But now, he was giving me adult advice on what it means to be in love, and how to take it seriously. I was actually impressed, and proud of him.
"Wow Briley, I'm impressed."
"I'm not that stupid teenager I used to be."
"You really love Erica don't you?" I asked him.
"With all my heart. She's amazing." He smiled, and was practically glowing. It was an incredible feeling to see my brother so happy.
"I completely approve of her. She really is something." I told him. I really meant it. She was beautiful, talented, funny, and compassionate.
"Good, she'll be happy to hear that." He said with a smile as he crumpled his wrapper into a ball.
All in all, this was probably one of the best moments I've spent with Briley, and I didn't want him to go back home in a week.
