Leaving America was upsetting. All of my younger cousins cried when I told them I had to go. Even Kat's aunt began crying.
When I got off the plane, I looked around for Dan immediately. He stood at the baggage claim, looking around for me.
"Dan!" I yelled. He turned to me and his face lit up. I wanted nothing more than to take him in my arms and kiss him. But there were too many people around who could recognize us.
"Phil!" His smile was brilliant as he approached me. Arms opened wide. He hugged me tight as soon as I was in arms reach. "I missed you so much."
"I missed you too." I whispered, burying my face in his neck.
"Let's go home." He said. "I've got your bags."
When we got to the flat, I went to our room to unpack. When I came out, the lounge was filled with candles and Dan was carrying dishes of food in from the kitchen. Muse was playing.
"I wanted to surprise you." Dan said. "It's not much but..."
"It's wonderful." I cut him off. "I love it." I kissed him. "You didn't have to do all this for me."
"I wanted to." He kissed me. "Come on. I worked hard on dinner."
"Ziti." I said, noticing the meal laid out. "My favorite."
"I know." We ate in silence for a while before he said something.
"So your cousin knows about us." He said.
"Dan." I sighed. "I told you, she found out on her own. I didn't tell her."
"I know." He groaned. "I just don't want everyone in the phandom to know just yet."
"She won't tell anyone." I assured, taking his hand from across the table. "I promise. No one knows but her."
"Alright." He calmed down. I looked down at our hands and noticed the engagement ring.
"You know," He said, seeing me looking at his hand. "You still have to ask me properly."
"I don't think I do." I replied.
"You asked me over Skype." He pointed out.
"All of our best moments happen over Skype." I reminded him.
"I suppose that's true." He blushed.
"I'll do it right." I promised, taking his hand in both of mine. "Soon."
"I know." I kissed his knuckles and went back to the wonderful meal Dan had made.
When the food was gone, I took the plates to the kitchen and began cleaning them. Dan's arms snaked around me and he kissed my neck.
"Why don't you save that for later." He suggested. "You were gone so long."
"Dan." I giggled, his hair brushing my neck. I turned off the tap and turned around, pressing my lips to his. "Let's move this to our room."
Sunlight streamed through the window the next morning. Waking me up. Dan's head was buried in the crook of my neck. My arms were draped loosely around his waist.
"I know you're awake." He whispered, kissing my neck.
"How can you always tell?" I laughed.
"You stop snoring." He said, matter of factly, lifting himself up to look at me. His fingers traced patterns on my chest.
"What should we do today?" I asked, reaching for my glasses.
"Can't we just lay here?" He begged. "You've been gone a whole month. We both deserve some cuddle time." I laughed and pulled him down onto my chest.
"We can stay for a little while." I agreed. "But we do need to get some things done today."
"Ugh. Why are you so responsible?"
"One of us has to be." I lifted his chin and kissed him.
"I hate when you're right."
"Come on." I squeezed him. "We promised a Dil video."
"But you just got home. Can't I have you for myself for one day?"
"Are you trying to guilt trip me?"
"That depends." He said, moving up the bed so we were eye level. "Is it working?"
"Maybe." I teased. Dan gave me the look he knew I can't say no to. "Fine. A day in bed it is."
He smiled triumphantly and kissed me.
"You're lucky I love you." I said.
"I love you too." He laughed, taking my hand in his own. I looked at the ring in his finger and suppressed a sigh.
"I had everything figured out." I told him. "I had a whole speech written and everything. I was going to take you out to dinner at a nice restaurant. I wanted everything to be perfect. You deserve the best."
"I wouldn't have cared if you'd asked me with a candy ring at Tesco." He said. "What matters is that I want to marry you. And you want to marry me. Why should we worry about the little details?"
"I didn't know what to do when you told me you found the ring." I said. "I panicked and ran to Kat. She's the one who talked me into asking you then."
"Thank her for me next time you talk."
"Why don't you thank her yourself?" I suggested.
"What are you talking about?"
"Kat's dad invited me back for Christmas and said I could bring someone else with me."
"You want me to go to America with you for Christmas?"
"Of course!" I squeezed him. "His exact words were 'bring a girlfriend or whoever' and considering I have a boyfriend, not a girlfriend..."
"Alright I get it." He laughed. Nudging me in the side. "I'd love to spend Christmas with your family." He kissed my cheek. "Now if you'll excuse me. I'm going to get us some breakfast."
