8. Goodbye

Turpin's POV

As I got dressed I thought about the woman to whom I was once betrothed to. I thought of the way her hair reminded me of sunlight and how her eyes sparkled like the deep blue sea. Her daughter looked so much like her it was frightening. Johanna had the same hair, trim, and beautiful pale skin complexion. The two things that my Johanna had that weren't Lucy Barker's was her eyes and nose.

She had that wretched barber's eyes and nose. Even though I couldn't stand the sight of the man, whose name evaded me, the combination of Lucy's features, chocolate brown eyes, and pointed nose suited Johanna well.

My thoughts drifted back to Lucy. 'Why did she marry that blasted barber? She could've lived in a respected household, not a wife of some lowlife who didn't know the difference between cologne and aftershave. That's why I took the barber away. To give my Lucy the life she never would have had.'

"Never will have," I corrected aloud.

I mourned for the life I would never have with Lucy, for she was wandering the streets of London, crazed and rejected. I felt guilty about raping her in the first place. Then she tried to kill herself. That made me feel even guiltier, but I couldn't bring myself to take her in. It would be too much to explain to Johanna, even if she was sixteen.

Every so often, on my way to the courthouse I would give Lucy a shilling, hoping it would help keep her fed. She didn't recognize me, I had changed so much over the years.

I did just that on this fine morning. Then I continued on my way to condemn more souls to damnation.

Sweeney's POV

I awoke with Alaizabel next to me. I laid there for a few moments, marveling at the beauty in front of me. She looked so peaceful in her sleep. As if nothing horrible in the world had ever touched her.

I, of course, knew different. Many treacherous things had shaped her life, and made her the person she was today. I knew some of these things, but I had an inkling that there was more to learn.

I rose from the bed, careful not to wake my beautiful goddess. I went down to the meat pie shop, and began to make breakfast.

An hour later I went back into Alaizabel's room, and kissed her to wake her.

Her eyes slowly opened, and a smile crept onto her face, "Good morning. What's all of this?"

I smiled a small smile, "Breakfast, what else? Now tuck in, before I eat it all."

She laughed, and took a bite of the cinnamon roll first, "Oh my god, Sweeney, this glorious. Why aren't you the baker?"

I chuckled at the thought, "Because I'm a better barber than Mrs. Lovett."

She smiled at the thought of Mrs. Lovett shaving faces. She shook her head, "I wouldn't  trust her with a razor."

I raised my eyebrows, "Yet, you trust me to cut your hair. Knowing what I do, I consider that suicide."

She crossed her arms, and furrowed her eyebrows, "I knew you wouldn't kill me. And that's not what I meant. I meant that Mrs. Lovett would mess up every hair she ever touched."

I smiled, "I have a feeling that you are completely, and utterly right."

She laughed, then furrowed her eyebrows once again, "Where is Mrs. Lovett, anyway?"

I smirked, "She went out with Toby for the day. That means that we have the shoppes all to ourselves."

She giggled as I climbed on top of her. She ran her hands up and down my chest, but not making any other moves.

I began to kiss her neck, and she moaned in my ear. I sucked on the place I had just kissed, and her breath came in quick bursts.

Suddenly she pushed me off of her. "Sweeney, I- I don't want to have sex yet."

I sat back on the bed, "Alright. Whatever you wish, my pet."

I left the room to allow Alaizabel to get dressed, and couldn't help but feel frustrated. I hadn't had any contact with a woman for fifteen years. Of course, she was still mourning her husband, which was probably the reason why she was so reluctant. That and the fact that we weren't even married. That would be the talk of the town if anyone found out.

I went to my shoppe, and sharpened my razors as I waited for Alaizabel to come out of her room.

Alaizabel's POV

I sat in the bed, gathering my thoughts. 'What did I just do?' I asked myself. 'You turned down getting laid, you oaf.'

I got dressed, went to Sweeney's shoppe, where I found him sharpening his razors, per usual.

"We don't have to open the shoppes," I said quietly.

He wrapped his arms around me, and put his head on my shoulder, "Alright."

"What do you want to do?" I asked quietly.

Sweeney kissed my cheek, "Do you want to go shopping? Bake? Stay here and talk?"

"I have a better idea. But only if your up to it."

He rose an eyebrow, "What?"

I told him my idea. He looked at my with sorrow filled eyes, "Okay."

Half an hour later we were standing in front of Lucy's grave. The headstone was simple, and plain. Not something Sweeney would have picked.

I hugged his waist and he knelt on the leaves, which he had wiped away from the marble marker. I noticed there were tears in his soft brown eyes.

As he placed his bouquet of roses on the stone he turned to me, "Can I have a moment, please?"

I nodded, and walked away, but that didn't stop me from overhearing him.

"Hey Lucy, I remember your name. I left a dozen roses on your grave today."

"I'm in the grass on my knees, wipe the leaves away. I just came to talk for a while. I got some things I need to say."

"Now that it's over I just wanna hold her. I'd give up all the world to see, that little piece of heaven looking back at me."

"Now that it's over I just wanna hold her. I've gotta live with the choices I made, and I can't live with myself today."

"Hey Lucy, I remember your name," he said as he got up, and blew her a kiss goodbye.

Once we were back at the shoppe Sweeney locked himself in his room.

I let him be for awhile, but after three hours it was ridiculous.

Finally I knocked on his door, "Sweeney, are you okay?"

'Of course not you fool, he just went to his late wife's grave. Be more supportive,' I scolded.

"Sweeney, will you please come out? It's not good for you to be cooped up all that time."

Finally he emerged, but with sullen look on his face.

I grabbed his hand and led him to the kitchen, where I poured him a large tot of gin .

He swallowed his drink down, while I sipped mine, as I got used to the burn in my throat.

I scooted a little closer to Sweeney and laid my head on his shoulder, "Will you tell me about Lucy?"

He gave me a look that told me he was confused, "Why on earth would you want to hear about her?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "Well, she was your wife, and I just thought it would be nice to talk about her."

He wrapped his arm around my waist, "Where do I start? Lucy was amazing. We met almost twenty years ago. She was from an upscale family, and I was working class. My father wanted me to be a blacksmith, but I wanted to be a barber. We got in many fights about it. I met Lucy while cleaning the shoppe one day. I was nine, and she was seven. We had known each other for years as apprentice and lady before we were even friends. Eventually we began talking, where we found out neither of us were happy with our lives. She was to be married to a man she didn't love, and she hated being one of the richest people in London. We devised a plan to run away, and followed through with it. After we ran things changed. I began to see her in a different light. Eventually we fell in love. We married, and about six months later we were expecting Johanna."

"When Johanna was born it was like the world was complete. She was a great mother to her. She would sing to her whenever Johanna couldn't sleep. Her voice was soft and light. It would ring through the air like bells. She would always put a smile on for the both of us even if she was upset. She was a beautiful woman."

"Her hair was as yellow as wheat, and fell around her shoulders in ringlets. Her eyes were as deep as the deep blue sea. She only came up to my chest. She had very little curves though. I mean she had an hourglass figure, but that was it."

I smile, and grab your hand, "She sounds like a wonderful woman, Sweeney. It sounds like you love her a lot."

He nodded, "I really do. She was my everything. Now that she's gone, my whole world had been shattered."

He looked up at me, and cupped my cheek, "Now, I hope to put it back together."

I smiled, and placed a soft kiss on his lips. He pushed the kiss farther and began to beg me for an entrance. I parted my lips, and let him explore my mouth for a few moments. Then he pulled back, and let me explore his. Neither of us heard Mrs. Lovett come in at all.

"What are you two doing?" She shrieked. "Toby, go to your room."
Toby scattered, and Sweeney and I pulled apart. My face grew hot and Sweeney looked mortified.

"What are you doing home so early?" He asked nonchalantly.

"Early? We've been gone from seven in the morning till seven at night. Or were you two too busy snogging that you didn't even notice the time?" She asked angrily.

"Now wait just a moment! We've been out today too, and it's been a very emotional day. It's a wonder we're snogging at all." I said with a bite in my tone. "I will not stand for you belittling us!"

With that I stormed out of the kitchen, and into my room, where I began to work on the doll I had found in Sweeney's room.

Mrs. Lovett's POV

I was furious. They were together. She took Mr. T away from me. I had my suspicions, but I waved them away. Now that they were proved, I couldn't keep my vision straight.

Toby popped out of his room, "Are you alright, mum?"

I released my group on the counter, and smiled, "Of course, love. Now, what would you like for dinner?"

He smiled back at me, "Can I have a meat pie?"

I can't around from the back and ruffled his hair, "As many as you'd like."

After I laid a couple of pies out for Toby I went to my room and locked the door. I began to cry quietly, not wanting them to know just how much they hurt me. I needed to think of a way to get rid Alaizabel, and I needed to think quick.
