"Dinner looks really nice Liz." it felt weird calling her by her first name, none of my friends parents told me to do that.
"Thank you Ariana. Luke, you have made friends with a very nice girl." she looked over at Luke and starting setting the plates of food on the table. I looked over at Luke also, he was blushing but just mouthed the word "embarrassing" to me. I held in my laughs and sat down next to Luke at the table.
The rest of Luke's family came flooding in and they all looked over at me. It felt like school, but more comfortable.
"Who's this?" One of his brothers, Ben asked.
"This is Ariana, a school friend. She's new." it seems as Luke has said that too many times today. I smiled and said hello as they sat down and started to eat.
"So, are you from America? I can tell my the accent." his dad asked me.
"Yes, I'm from California. I'm lucky Australia isn't that different from back at home. Except the lack of palm trees." I said and they actually laughed.
"It sounds like you enjoy it here. So, how did you and Luke meet? You know he's never had a girl over here in awhile." Liz joked.
"MOM!" Luke said and she shushed him. I laughed before answering her question.
"Well it was my first class and he was sitting in the back so I decided to sit next to him, then we shared our love for penguin and music." I smiled and she seemed happy that's the way we met.
"You should hang out with him more often, he seems happy." Liz smiled and I looked over at Luke, who had his hand on his forehead and his face was bright red.
"Me and Ariana are going to my room." Luke said and grabbed my arm. Liz waved as I was dragged away by Luke's grip.
"Where were we? Oh yeah-this is Pengy." he smiled and handed the penguin to me. I held it like a prize, it was truly precious. Luke sat next to me on the bed as I admired the stuffed animal.
"You seem to like him a lot. Want to keep him?" he said and I immediately said no.
"You should keep him. I think you adore penguins more than me." I laughed and he had a look of relief on his face.
"I hoped you'd say no, I could never loose Pengy." he said, snatching the animal from my arms.
"Hey! I never said I was done admiring him!" I laughed and tackled Luke until I got Pengy.
"You're a lot more free when you're not shy." he said, looking at me from across the room where I brought the penguin.
"You too, Hemmings." I smiled and we both laughed at how stupid we were being.
I guess my new life wouldn't be so bad as long as Luke was in it. He was my new escape, along with the beach.
"It's getting late, my mom better come get me." I said and he seemed sad I was leaving.
"Don't be sad, I'll see you in school tomorrow!" I said, softly punching his shoulder, which he played along by rubbing it.
"I don't want to go to school know Michael will be there to bully me." he said, suddenly changing moods.
"Hey, you've got me." I smiled and he smiled back as we played with Pengy until my mom got here.
"Bye Luke! Tell your mom thanks for the dinner, it was delicious!" I said and walked out the door. I ran into the car and we left Luke's house.
"How was it?" my dad asked.
"Good, I think we're going to hang out a lot." I said and laid back until we arrived home.
When we got home I took a shower and put on my pjs. I decided it was too late to FaceTime my friends, so I just thought to myself how fun today was. I hope everyday will be like this.
I finished the last of my homework and got comfortable in bed until my phone vibrated on my night stand next to me. I looked to see it was a message from Luke. It said "I had fun today! Maybe we can do this another time? (: ps-Pengy misses you!" I smiled and put down my phone to answer in the morning.
Before I knew it, I was drifting off to sleep happily for the first time since I got here.
