16. I Gave Your Son an M16
"Ha. Real funny assholes. Now this is serious, if you haven't seen them, let's all just be on our merry way." I say to the strange man and his son.
This really shouldn’t be this easy; I was expecting some major adventure with Daryl. I guess it’s possible that it is them, I slowly lower my gun. I bite my lip looking at the new faces.
"Listen lady, if you're with Daryl, I’d be happy to prove that I'm Rick."
I sigh, "Fine, but pull anything funny and you'll regret it."
The supposed Rick gives a slight eye roll, then he and his son follow me through the forest. When we get to the car, Daryl is leaning against it smoking one of my cigarettes. I give him a look, and move out of the way so Daryl can get a look at the people.
As soon as Daryl lays eyes on them, he drops the cigarette, a small grin forming on his face. "Well I'll be damn." Daryl says while slowly walking to greet his friends.
He walks to Rick and shakes hands, pulling him in for a slight bro hug. "I didn't know if I’d ever see you again." Rick says pulling away from his friend.
I stand with a hand on my hip and Daryl’s used cigarette in my other hand. I take a puff as I watch the friends reunite, only wishing it would have been this easy to find my friends.
Daryl looks down at the younger boy, "Hey Carl I hope you kept your dad in line for me." Carl smiles lightly and nods.
Daryl stands up straight looking at Rick, "Where's lil' ass kicker?"
Rick puts his hand on his temples and closes his eyes, "We don't know. We were hoping on of the group had her, but when we were at the prison her carrier had blood in it." Rick begins to choke up.
"What?!" Daryl runs his hands through his hair with a look of panic. Rick looks down at the ground and Daryl walks closer to him. "You tellin’ me that Judith is gone?"
“We-we couldn’t of done anything different. Walkers were all over the place we had to leave Daryl. Maybe someone else got her, we just don’t know.” Rick shakes his head clearly getting emotional.
I watch as the two men bicker back and forth, from what I gather lil' ass kicker was a baby and Daryl was really close to her. What a shame. I had no idea how much Daryl actually cared for kids, it’s pretty adorable. Daryl paces back and forth in front of my car. He stops in front of Rick and places a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry man.” Daryl shakes him in a friendly way.
Rick frowned then gave a slight nod. I stand leaning against the hood of my car watching these two guys have a moment. They continue to talk about recent events and where they are headed next. I notice the kid just standing looking bored. He has a gun with him; maybe he would like to see some heavy duty military equipment.
I walk up to them with my hands in my pockets. “Hey Rick, mind if I show your kid some kick ass military shit?”
He cuts his eyes over to Daryl almost looking for an answer. “She’s cool.” Daryl states giving me a smirk.
“Come on kid.” I motion in the direction of my Humvee.
The boy follows close behind, he doesn’t seem very willing but this is so much better than listening to boring adult conversation. I take my keys and unlock the back of the car. A few hand guns fall out I bend down to pick them up, I catch a glance of Carl’s face. His expression was priceless. I smile to myself, being proud of my artillery.
He grabs the M16 and holds it with a smile on his face. I take it from him looking through the sights. I hand it back to him.
“Sights are accurate; you can have it if it’s okay with your dad.” I place a hand on my hip staring down at the happy kid.
I guess he really isn’t that much of a kid. He looks like he is about 14 and he really seems like he knows what he is doing. I bet he doesn’t like being called kid.
“You’re kidding? You’re just gonna’ give this to me?!” He exclaims happily.
I close the trunk of the Humvee and nod to Carl. “If your dad doesn’t care then sure. I have about 10 more back at the farm.”
“Did I hear Daryl say you were at the Greene Farm?” He questions taking a look through the sights.
“Yup, Daryl said you guys use to live there.” I look at the sun deciding how much sunlight we have left. I want to make a stop into a town about 30 miles from here. I heard they had a canned good warehouse.
I walk up to the two men and offer my hand to Rick, “It’s nice to meet you. I’m sure we’ll be friends.” I give him a small grin; he takes my hand and shakes it with a firm hand. “Oh and I gave your son an M16 if that’s okay.”
Rick’s eyes grow wide and he raises his eyebrows, “Okay… Carl just be careful with it okay?” He laughs looking past me to Carl.”
“You guys can go ahead and hop in the back of the car; I’m going to have a word with Daryl.” I direct.
Rick walks up to me and places a warm hand on my shoulder, “Thank you.”
He tilts his head forward. I can’t help but blush for some weird reason; there was just something about Rick that gives me butterflies. I raise my shoulders and smile to myself as Rick and Carl walk to the car.
Daryl stares over at me frowning; he crosses his arms over his chest and purses his lips. “What was that?”
I look the other way, “What was what Daryl?”
He takes a step closer to you, his face still bearing the same the same frown.
“I saw the way you looked at him.” The side of his mouth rises into a semi smile.
“Mind your own damn business Dixon.” I smirk, my cheeks reddening. “So I was thinking we would stop in a town near here, supplies are always needed.”
“Sounds good ta’ me.” Daryl says as he and I turn around to head to the car.
He places a hand on the small of my back and guides me along. When we reach my door Daryl leans down and whispers in my ear. “Just remember you liked me first.”
