6. Chapter 6

We climbed the steps to the porch and I opened the door. It was just one large room, but it was a lot better than nothing. Everyone entered the home and I closed the door behind me. There was one lamp in the one large room. After I closed the door, I turned and explored the one large room. There was a window on the other side of the room and a dresser laying against the wall next to me, and there was a small bed side table sitting in the corner. On top of the dresser, there was a medium sized mirror. I looked in the mirror and saw dirt all over my face. Sweat dripping from my forehead. I looked weak and tired. I looked nothing like me.

“ Well, looks like we will be stuck here for a while,” Leo said. I nodded in agreement. I looked down and opened a drawer of the dresser. I looked into the drawer and saw a portable television, blankets, and four cans of food. I picked up the portable television, laid it on the bedside table, and I pressed the power button. I then watched the screen go from black to white.  I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but I just stared at the screen. Then, a voice came from it. When I first heard the voice, I turned the volume down as low as it could go, and it seemed like no one noticed.

“ Hello. Now that you have found your shelter, you must settle in. This will be your home for quite some time. If you look in the top drawer of your dresser, you will find blankets and food, but if you found this device, then you probably already spotted the items. In the middle drawer, you will see a tablet. When you turn it on, there will be a sign up form. If you sign up, you are signing up for a battle. You will fight for a chance to win one prize. Whatever you desire. But only one. I know this is a lot to take in, but you must be calm, and if you sign up, then you will be provided with instructions on how to battle and what to battle with. When you signup, you must place the teleportation device, that you will find in the last drawer, on the ground and press the button on top. When the hour comes, it will be activated and you will be teleported to the arena. That is all for now. Good day,” the voice said. I pressed the power button. I have to sign up if we want blankets, food, anything. I sighed and went back to where everyone was. Ian and Penny had the blankets wrapped around them. They were shivering.

“ They can have the blankets,” Willow said. Leo and I nodded and we looked around a bit. I opened the middle drawer of the dresser and saw the tablet. I opened the last drawer and saw the device. It looked like something you would see in a science fiction movie. I quickly put it in the drawers, not wanting anyone to see them. I don’t know why I didn’t want anyone of them to see the devices, but I still hid them and kept quiet.

“ What do we do now?” Leo asked.

“ Eat,” I responded. It has been a long day, and we all were hungry. I opened a can of beans and we split the can between us, wanting to save the others for later. We ate the little food that was in the can, and we noticed that it was dark out side. I would say around nine thirty, ten. Penny and Ian were both already asleep, the blanket was wrapped around them. It was cold, but it could be colder. I tried to go to sleep, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t stop thinking about what has happened. In the beginning of this day, I was being kicked and punched by a bunch of bullies, and at the end of the day, I was sleeping in a one room home, a strange place that I haven’t seen before, with my brothers, my best friend, and a little girl I have never met before. I was confused, scared, every bad feeling is a feeling I was dealing with at this very moment. I felt like crying, but I was standing strong. I then decided that I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I opened my eyes to the darkness. I could hear everyone breathing, but I could barely see. I quietly and carefully got up, and made my way to the dresser. Even though it was quite dark, I could see the outlines of everyone’s bodies. I opened the drawer where I hid the tablet. I turned it on and saw a form. The battle form. I entered my first and last name, my age, so on. It asked how much I weighed, and I wasn’t sure. I was skinny, but I didn’t have much muscle, which would be helpful. I entered 120. I haven’t checked my weight in several months. I entered several other things, then I pressed enter.

 ‘Battle: 1:00 pm. Tomorrow’

That is what it said. I stared at it. I remembered the next thing I had to do. I grabbed the teleporting device and laid it on the ground, farther away from everyone else. I pressed the button, and nothing happened. I wasn’t sure what I expected to happen, but I expected something. I sighed and went back to laying on the floor next to Ian and Willow. I laid there, thinking, and hoping, not sure of what, but I hoped. I then, slowly, fell to sleep.
