The Lake house

Hope had hoped that she would get a quiet month of summer break with her dad, but that all changes when five boys come along with her stepmom's best friend's daughter. What she had thought would be a month in hell turns out to become a lot more than just that. Laughter, tears, drama and love. How will the summer turn out?

1. 1.

I sighed as I looked at the clock. He was supposed to be here soon. Sighing, I grabbed an apple from the basket and jumped onto the counter, letting my feet hanging over the edge softly kicking them back and forth. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. As I was biting into my apple, my mom walked through the door with her usual smile on her face. She was always so happy. I guess that’s where I got my optimism and happiness from. With the apple still in my mouth, I tried to greet her, but it came out like a weird muffling sound. She laughed.

“And hi to you too, sweetheart. You ready?” She asked while making a sandwich. I shrugged my shoulders as I finished chewing on the piece of apple that was in my mouth.

“Not really. I’m hella nervous.” I answered honestly. Mom chuckled. She put a piece of hair behind her ear as she walked over to me and kissed my forehead. She had no problem doing so, since I was small. Even sitting on the counter, she could easily wrap her arms around me and cover me completely with her body. Being 5’2 sucks.

“You shouldn’t be nervous honey, he’s your dad.” She reminded me. I sighed. “Plus, he’s trying. He really is.” Mom said, kissing my forehead again. Her kisses always left a smile on my face, no matter what mood I was in.

“I know mom. He’s not what makes me nervous. I am. I’m going to be spending a whole month with her..” I spit the words out as if they would poison me. Mom laughed and I couldn’t help but giggle.

“You make her sound like she’s a witch. And I’m sure she’s nice. You just have to give her some time.” Mom said, being her usual happy and positive self. Just as she finished her sentence, the front door opened and closed and I knew way too well, who just entered. A smile flashed across my face as he stepped into the kitchen where mom and I were.

“Hey Steve!” I said happily, as I put my hand out for a fist bump. Steve smiled.

“Hey kiddo! How was your last day of school?” He asked, bumping his fist with mine gladly, before kissing my mom on the cheek, ever so kindly. I crossed my legs in front of me on the counter before answering.

“Oh you know, just the usual. Kaylee and I promised each other that we wouldn’t become bitches over the summer, like any other year.” I said laughing. Steve chuckled, as my mom looked at me with her not that language look. I just smile back, acting innocent.

“Well I’m sure you’ll return to your senior year just as awesome.” Steve said, making me smile. “So, are you ready?” He asked. I shook my head. I was nowhere near ready. I was going to spend one month with my dad, whom I haven’t seen since Christmas, and his new wife, whom I dislike with every nerve in my body. The only somewhat positive thing about this whole thing was that I get to see my brother Dylan again. He’s been off to college and I haven’t seen him since he came and visited for mom’s birthday three months ago.

“Nope, not the slightest. I’m going to be spending time with my dad and his ten years old younger wife whom is trying way too hard to get on my good side, which only pushes her further down on my not-good list. She’s so disgustingly sweet it’s… Disgusting.” I laughed. Mom couldn’t help but laugh along a little.

“You always had a way with words, Hope.” Mom said winking at me. I giggled. Steve was sitting at the counter next to me.

“Well, then how did I get on your good side? I was trying my hardest to become your friend and you gave in pretty easily.” He questioned. I shrugged my shoulders and looked at him with a smile. Steve had come into my life, just a little over three years ago. He hadn’t pushed me into liking him. It just sorta happened. He knew what to say and he knew when to give me space. Plus, he’s an awesome guy, and I can see just how happy he makes my mom, and that helped a lot. Not that I would tell Steve that. I liked to keep him on his toes.

“I guess you were just lucky?” I said, more as a question. He and mom laughed along with me. He put his arm over my shoulders and pulled me into his side. He gave me a light squeeze before letting me go. I brushed some of my hair out of my face before looking at him with a smile.

“Well I’m glad that I was ‘just lucky.’” He said, mimicking my voice. I stuck my tongue out at him. He ruffled my hair as he jumped down and grabbed a water bottle from the fridge.

“But to get back on the topic, I’m sure you’re going to have a great time with your dad, Hope. And if not, then at least with Dylan. You and he haven’t seen each other in a long time. You still have that bet if I remember correctly.” He said winking at me. I laughed, remembering Dylan and I’s bet. I nodded as an answer to what he had said.

“You’re right, Stevie. I’ll have Dylan. He promised me that he would be there the whole time.” I said, feeling slightly less nervous. He gave me one of his bear hugs. He simply wrapped me in his arms while rocking from side to side, his head on top of mine. My arms could only just reach around his torso. I relaxed as I felt him press a soft kiss to my hair.

“You done packing honey?” Mom asked after we had let go. I nodded my head yes.

“Good, ‘cause he’s here now.” Mom said looking at me with concern in her eyes. My eyes went wide as I looked out of the kitchen window. She wasn’t kidding. His black Mercedes was holding by the sidewalk. I could see his figure still in the car, on the phone.

“Nope! No, I’m not ready! I’m not here!” I said, pointing at both of them, before storming up the stairs and into my room. I could hear someone knocking on the door, and my heart only started beating even faster. Is that even possible!? I thought. But just a few seconds later, I heard his voice, and it was like it jumped right out of my chest. I was sure that he could hear it downstairs. I heard fainted voices and I guess mom took him into the living room.

I heard soft footsteps coming my way, and before I knew it, Steve had opened my door and looked at me. It must have looked funny, how I was all curled up in the corner next to my door, my jumper pulled over my knees and my hands covered in the sweater. Sweaterpaws… I love that word.. It’s so cute! I thought before Steve got down on my level and smile at me softly.

“You have that look on your face.” I mumbled. I looked down, avoiding his gaze. I knew it was silly of me acting this childish, but I couldn’t help it.

“What look?” Steve asked sweetly.

“The one where you know that I’m going to come with you even though I don’t want too, but your look tells my consciousness that everything is going to be just fine.” I rambled out. Steve looked taken aback for a few seconds before he started laughing a little bit. He covered his mouth with the back of his hand and looked at me. I couldn’t help but smile. When Steve smiled, everyone smiled.

“Come on Kiddo. Can’t hide up here forever, can ya?” He got up and grabbed  me. I was swung over his shoulder as he easily opened the door and took me downstairs, despite my complains he didn’t put me down. At least not until I was in the living room. He put me down at the floor, gently, across from my dad who looked at me with a smile. I could tell that he was just as nervous as I was. That helped me a little. At least I wasn’t alone in this. I smile back a little.

“Hey Hope.” He said as he sat up properly. I smiled.

“Hey dad.” I said. Silence filled the room, along with the uncomfortable tension. When mom couldn’t handle it anymore, she cleared her throat and looked at the time.

“So, Jack what are you going to be doing the next two months?” Mom asked, trying her hardest to create a conversation. Dad looked at my mom, and then at me, and then back at my mom, making me hella confused.

“Unfortunately, I can’t tell you, Melinda. It’s a secret, and since Hope’s here, I won’t spill it.” Dad said, winking at me. I grew curious. But Knowing my dad, he wouldn’t say a single word about this so called secret.

The time passed, and twenty minutes later, I stood at the front step hugging and kissing both my mom and Steve goodbye, wishing them a good vacation at the Bahamas. They both thanked me and told me to say hi to Dylan from them. I agreed and hugged them one last time, before I grabbed my second suitcase and walked towards my dad’s car. Dad gladly took it and put it in the trunk. I sighed softly before turning around and smiled a reassuring smile to my mom, that looked at me with concerned eyes. ‘I’ll be fine.’ I mimed to her. I saw her smile which made me smile. I got in the car and buckled up. My dad waved once before he drove away. He then turned his head and smiled one of his smiles that used to tell me that he was about to tell me something he found amazing.

“Okay dad. Spill it, what it is. What are we doing the next month or so?” I asked, growing impatient. Dad took a left turn and looked at me. He was clearly trying to hide the smile on his face, but failed miserably.

“Remember that old lake house we used to go to every summer when you were younger?” He asked as casually as he could. I nodded, feeling my curiosity grow. “Well… That’s where we’re heading! Mia and her best friend Jen are joining us. Jen is bringing her daughter and two sons and five of her daughter’s best friends. Plus, Dylan is going to be there, and he’s bringing his bestfriend Logan to the party. So it’s just us fourteen people! Don’t worry there’s room enough.. But you might have to share a room with one of Isabella’s friends. You don’t mind, do you?” He asked, when he was done rambling.

I couldn’t believe it. Here I was, thinking that I would get one quiet month with my father, but there he were, inviting a bunch of people that I didn’t know to come and live with us, in a place that used to be ours! It was our secret! How could he!? And Isabella!? He could just as well have brought an atom bomb to the party! He knew how I felt about her! That bitch is staying with me for two months!? Forget it. Stop the car, I want off!

But of course, I didn’t say any of those things to him. I simply nodded with a small smile plastered to my face. I couldn’t believe it. This was going to be one month in hell.
